BMWs turbocharged S55 engine uses a water-to-air charge air cooling system, with a front-mounted heat exchanger responsible for heat dissipation. Unfortunately, the factory single-row, 27mm core design is quick to heat soak under high load, leading to excessive intake air temperatures and potential limp mode conditions especially on modified or track-driven cars.
To solve this issue, we've developed a drop-in upgrade over the factory unit. Engineered for durability and maximum cooling efficiency, this heat exchanger is a must-have for high-horsepower street builds, spirited canyon driving, and extended track sessions. Built from TIG-welded 5052 aluminum, our design eliminates the factory plastic end tanks one of the systems most common failure points. Each heat exchanger features CNC-machined billet aluminum hose connections, mounting flanges, and brackets for perfect OE fitment and trouble-free installation.
By replacing the OEM 27mm single-row core with a robust 35mm dual-row design, this heat exchanger dramatically increases both cooling capacity and surface area. Engines make more power when you're able to move as much air and fuel as possible through them. However, air density is just as important as air volume. Cooler air is denser air, so in addition to keeping your engine cool, it's important to make sure that your intake charge is as cool as possible. Turner Motorsport's upgraded intercooler works to reduce air temperatures with a bare minimum of pressure drop. Less pressure drop means less restriction, and a turbocharger that doesn't have to work as hard. This results not only in a longer service life for your turbocharger, but a substantial increase in performance as well.
The stepped design increases volume and surface are in a limited space by adding an additional smaller core at the top of the intercooler. Both cross sectional area and frontal surface area are increased by a whopping 56%, with a design that still weighs under 20 pounds. On the stock intercooler, the temperature differential between the inlet and outlet sides of the intercooler represented a 95 degree drop. With the Turner Motorsport intercooler, that drop was increased to a chilling 140 degrees. The dyno results don't lie: as a bolt-in upgrade, expect gains of 18 wheel horsepower and 10 lb/ft of torque. With a tune and supporting modifications, further gains are possible, up to 36 horsepower and 28 lb/ft of torque.

This ECS intercooler replaces the stock MINIature intercooler with a MASSIVE 250% larger surface area and a 125% thicker base core! This increase in core size improves flow while cooling compressed air into the intake manifold. Cast aluminum end tanks are TIG welded and feature machined transitions for maximum flow. The limitations of the stock intercooler were apparent throughout our testing and design process. The stock part consistently struggled to manage charge air temperatures, even under normal driving conditions.
