It's no secret that N55 BMW turbo motors can suffer from oil control problems causing oil to blow through and coat the intercooler and charge piping, gunking up intake valves and the VANOS system, lowering the effective octane, and generally degrading engine performance. The higher your boost levels the more apparent these problems become. The solution to this problem has finally arrived. The BMS oil catch can. While there are other catch cans on the market they all fall short in various areas. Some are mounted on the hot/turbo side of the motor preventing proper vapor condensation. Others utilize hoses that are too small and runs that are too long to allow proper PCV ventilation causing internal motor/ring sealing issues. Some have insufficient or no internal baffle system while others have internal baffles systems that are too restrictive. Some even bypass the PCV system all together venting crankcase gas and odor to the atmosphere. Most are simply repackaged oil catch cans from smaller / lower power motors shoehorned into place in the turbo BMW engine bay. To solve these problems BMS designed their oil catch can kit from the ground up specifically for the turbo BMW application. It features 100% CNC machining with zero welding for a precision fit and long life. The can itself is guaranteed for the life of the vehicle. The hoses exceed the OEM PCV piping in diameter and that flow rate is maintained throughout the entire oil catch can ensuring no excessive crankcase pressure buildup. Oil venting and circulation continues to be a problem on BMW engines and now even more so on the turbocharged N54 and N55 engines. The existing stock system does a very poor job of separating fluid and vapor and this leads to an oily film or even small pools of oil throughout the turbos and intake. We're seeing a lot more 135 and 335 cars with drivability and performance issues because oil has sneaked by the ring seals and is coating the intake piping, intercooler, intake valves, and other critical areas. The problem is worsened with higher boost levels. Oil is excellent for lubricating moving parts but terrible when it gets into the combustion chamber, effectively lowering the octane rating and reducing performance. Our own shop has gone the extra step and offers media blasting of the intake valves to strip away the oily buildup we have seen.

Our shop also strongly recommends an oil catch can be installed in the line for the crankcase vent. The oil catch can traps oil as it leaves the valve cover and holds it in a canister. This catch can is located on the cooler side of the engine where the oil will condense easier and stay in the can. Whatever minimal vapors are left over in the oil is then vented back through the canister and into the intake where it is safe to be burned up in the engine or recirculated back through the system again. This is the way the system was designed! At each oil change simply unscrew the canister and empty the trapped oil with your regular used oil. The Burger Tuning oil catch can is the best we have seen so far. Installing one of these will avoid costly repairs in the future and help maintain your boost and performance. It's one of the smartest modifications you can make because it demonstrates a well-thought out tuning strategy and care for the condition of your engine.

The BMS Oil Catch Can is made from aluminum and with a stealthy black anodized finish. It installs on the cooler side of the engine with a dedicated bracket and new oversized vent lines. The location is key as heat will evaporate the oil and send too much vapor back into the engine (where cooler air will turn it back into fluid). The BMS OCC also has a factory-like appearance. Since BMS designed their catch can from scratch they can guarantee it fits and performs correctly for the N54/N55 engine, unlike other catch cans on the market that are poorly retrofitted from other applications and under-sized for the N54 engine.

Note: Since the crankcase vent system is considered part of the overall emissions system, installing this may be a violation of local, state, and federal laws. While exemptions are made for track/race and off-road use, check with your local state inspection facility on using this in street-driven vehicles

Oil venting and circulation continues to be a problem on BMW engines and now even more so on the turbocharged N54 and N55 engines. The existing stock system does a very poor job of separating fluid and vapor and this leads to an oily film or even small pools of oil throughout the turbos and intake. We're seeing a lot more 135 and 335 cars with drivability and performance issues because oil has sneaked by the ring seals and is coating the intake piping, intercooler, intake valves, and other critical areas. The problem is worsened with higher boost levels. Oil is excellent for lubricating moving parts but terrible when it gets into the combustion chamber, effectively lowering the octane rating and reducing performance. Our own shop has gone the extra step and offers media blasting of the intake valves to strip away the oily buildup we have seen.

Our shop also strongly recommends an oil catch can be installed in the line for the crankcase vent. The oil catch can traps oil as it leaves the valve cover and holds it in a canister. This catch can is located on the cooler side of the engine where the oil will condense easier and stay in the can. Whatever minimal vapors are left over in the oil is then vented back through the canister and into the intake where it is safe to be burned up in the engine or recirculated back through the system again. This is the way the system was designed! At each oil change simply unscrew the canister and empty the trapped oil with your regular used oil. The Burger Tuning oil catch can is the best we have seen so far. Installing one of these will avoid costly repairs in the future and help maintain your boost and performance. It's one of the smartest modifications you can make because it demonstrates a well-thought out tuning strategy and care for the condition of your engine.

Get rid of the notorious B58 oil filter disintegration problem forevermore with the MMR Performance Oil Filter. By replacing the factory paper filter element with MMR’s advanced high-flow, high-filtration stainless steel filter unit, you will protect your engine from the big bills (and potentially worse) caused by the OE filter’s collapse failure. The oil filters on BMW’s B58 & B57 3.0 6-cylinder engines (both petrol and diesel) suffer from a well-documented quality problem with the factory paper-element oil filter. At service time, when removal of the filter is attempted, the bottom section frequently breaks away from the disintegrated filtration material. This leaves the broken base stuck in the oil filter housing and an expensive removal/replacement job to extract the remains and fit a new housing. Such is the problem that there’s even an official BMW technical bulletin to warn their dealers of this. The MMR replacement Oil Filter is a pretty special replacement filter. It fixes this annoying problem once and for all. The MMR Oil Filter element is made from a pleated high-flow stainless steel micronic filter cloth – a medical-grade material guaranteed to filter out oil contamination right down to 20 Microns, ensuring far better protection than paper-based filters can achieve. As well as this exceptional filtration, the filter material allows for five times the flow of comparable paper oil filters. Its design provides consistent filtering across entire filter surface. The failure of the factory oil filter generally just leads to a large bill to extract the damaged remnants. However, more worryingly, it has occasionally been known to lead to broken pieces of filter media running through the small oilways and orifices of the engine’s lubrication system, risking blocking the oil running round the bearings and VANOS system and causing much greater mechanical damage before it is caught. The MMR Oil Filter is a reusable unit which can be used over and over again. As long as it is thoroughly cleaned at each oil change, it will last the lifetime of the vehicle and keep on protecting the engine just as it did when new. However, proper cleaning is not necessarily a DIY job, as it requires the use of a suitable solvent to break down the old oil, and cleaning from the inside out with compressed air to remove any risk of debris remaining. If you have any doubts about this, we recommend as best-practice to change filter with every oil-change. The MMR Oil Filter is a lifetime reusable filter. But to resuse and avoid any future loss of filtration or oil flow, it is essential that it is thoroughly cleaned at each oil change as follows: Remove MMR Oil Filter from filter housing Remove 3x O-Rings from MMR Oil Filter prior to Step 3, as fuel will degrade and cause damage to these rubber/Viton components. Soak the filter one of the following fluids for 5-10 minutes – Petrol/Gasoline or Carb Cleaner or Soap and Water Agitate/stir every few minutes until the outer surface is free of any engine debris Dry the filter using compressed air, blow air through the filter, (do not press the compressed air gun against the filter, keep at least a 10mm gap from nozzle to filter) starting from the inside out, then at an angle on the outside of the screen to further remove any remaining particles or cleaning solution. Once dry, reinstall O-Rings (MMR advices replacement of these O-Rings every oil service - See ES4810064) and refit into oil filter housing and engine. Genuine MMR Performance O-Ring service kit for the MMX Performance oil filter and billet housing. Does not include MMR oil filter or billet housing, only the four O-Rings needed to service our reusable filter. The MMR Performance oil filter and housing contains four O-Rings within the kit. We recommend you replace the O-Ring set on a regular basis when changing or cleaning the MMR filter, in order to maintain the integrity of the sealing properties it was designed to provide. As it's a direct replacement with the original O-Ring set supplied, it's a very straightforward process to swap and replace. Fitment is limited to the MMR Performance oil filter (MMR17-1502 - See ES4810063) to protect against the notorious B58 oil filter collapse
