BMW E46 Turner Motorsport Front Control Arm Performance Kit: Upgrade Your BMW's Handling

  • Improves handling and steering response
  • Enhances cornering stability and control
  • Reduces flex and play in the front suspension
  • Durable construction ensures long-lasting performance

Enhance the performance of your BMW with the BMW E46 Turner Motorsport Front Control Arm Performance Kit. This kit is designed to improve handling and steering response, providing a more dynamic driving experience. With enhanced cornering stability and control, you'll feel confident taking on corners and curves. The kit also reduces flex and play in the front suspension, resulting in improved overall handling characteristics. Plus, its durable construction ensures long-lasting performance, making it a reliable upgrade for BMW enthusiasts.

When you're looking for a control arm upgrade for your M3 this Turner Motorsport package is unrivaled, featuring their popular monoball bearing to replace the failure prone rubber bushing. The upgrades for this product aren't only that they will outlast everything else you can put on your car. These monoballs offer much smoother, more responsive steering that allows the front control arm to articulate more naturally instead of fighting against the suspension causing deflection.

Stock rubber front control arm bushings are designed to allow significant fore/aft movement of the front wheels to help absorb road impacts.  This soft flexible design maximizes daily driving comfort and helps to add the “luxury” feeling to your BMW, but it is far from ideal for the performance or racing enthusiast that is looking for optimal handling and braking performance.  Being a bonded rubber bushing that is constantly twisting and deflecting when in use, stock rubber bushings take a beating and often fail prematurely, resulting in further degraded handling, braking shimmy or even clunking felt under your feet.

In the past, the only upgrade option to improve handling of your E46 M3 was to replace the stock rubber with poly bushings, or delrin bushings that wear prematurely and are not serviceable or rebuild-able.  While well-designed poly bushings can vastly improve handling characteristics and offer good road feel with minimal increase to NVH, they are still a compromise when it comes to ultimate handling and braking performance.

Introducing the new Turner Front Control Arm Spherical Bearings!  The Turner engineering team set out to design a no-compromise solution that requires no modification and offers instantaneous cornering and braking response.  Our control arm bearings utilize a unique grease-able spherical bearing that is both serviceable and replaceable, with integrated dust seals to help keep dirt and moisture out.  This bearing offers considerable improvement in both precision and durability compared to other unsealed poly and delrin bushing inserts previously available, which can wear prematurely due to contamination.  The bearing assembly utilizes the highest quality materials, precision machining quality, and components to ensure a perfect fit and longest lasting component life possible.

The result is the ultimate in terms of low friction, no binding, and no unwanted deflection, as well as exceptional steering precision, turn-in response, and direct braking feedback with minimal increase in NVH.  These spherical bearings are a must have for any track car, but are also completely street-able and are a great upgrade for any enthusiast that enjoys spirited driving.

BMW’s are known to have failure prone front thrust arm bushings.  The flexible rubber bushings, even those found in M performance models, allow significant movement of the front wheels to maximize daily driving comfort, but also allow considerable alignment change.  This results in a disconnected and numb road feel, standing between you and a confidence inspiring driving experience. Eventually the fluid filled rubber bushings fatigue and crack due to continual deflection and ozone degradation, and eventually the damping fluid leaks out resulting in complete failure.

For the enthusiast looking for superior performance and longevity with a crisp, confidence-inspiring driving experience, our sealed ball joint monoballs are the best solution available!  Our experience with spherical front control arm ball joints goes back to those we designed and used in our IMSA E90 328i and E92 M3 race cars (GS class Champions in 2011). We wanted to offer as many BMW owners possible a similar level of handling, precision, and control for the track and street.

Utilizing a sealed OEM BMW ball joint for exceptional quality and durability, making them completely at home on both the street and track with no compromise.  We have done extensive street, autocross, and track testing to ensure the ball joint used in this bushing design excels in each setting. The advantage of a sealed ball joint is that it eliminates all unwanted deflection while still allowing complete bind-free movement throughout suspension travel, resulting in exceptional control of wheel alignment.  What you get is superior steering precision, turn-in response, direct braking feedback, and better handling.

In short, if you're seeking the ultimate in precise, predictable handling and control, with crisp braking response and a long service life that’s equally at home on the street or track - look no further. We have you covered.

We offer these control arms with the monoball bearings pre-installed for your convenience. Since BMW recommends the control arms be replaced for every other bushing change, we prefer to sell these as a pre-assembled set. The bushings are also available separately if you wish to source your own control arms.

Control Arm Bearing

  • CNC machined corrosion resistant 304 Stainless steel shell, bolt sleeves, & snap rings
  • Sealed spherical ball joint for long service life & maintained OE fitment
  • Suspension pre-load is no longer required when torquing the control arm hardware

Performance

  • Nearly instantaneous, crisp steering and braking response.
  • Maintenance free, long lasting performance.

Control arm bushings play a key role in connecting the wheels to the chassis of the vehicle. Tasked with keeping suspension geometry in check while absorbing noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) factory rubber bushings were engineered to provide a balance of comfort and control. As a factory bushing ages, it becomes brittle and begins to harden. When this happens the bushing will actually shrink and allow excess play in the suspension joint. This is typically felt by a sudden jerk forward after the car comes to a stop and is a leading cause of "sloppy" or "loose" suspension feel. By replacing the bushing with a full polyurethane unit or using a bushing insert, this play is eliminated since the suspension joint is being supported by a much stiffer material that will not harden or shrink over time. Additionally, the inherent stiffness of the urethane material translates body forces much more directly. This means steering inputs from the driver are effectively transferred to the wheels and vital road information is transmitted properly from the wheels to the driver. Poweflex is a leading manufacturer of aftermarket suspension bushings. Using state of the art design and manufacturing, all replacement bushings are engineered to out-perform and out-last the ones that came in the car. Each line of bushings is meticulously tested and then re-tested to ensure perfect fitment and enduring quality through the life of the vehicle. A full lifetime warranty backs every one of their products and demonstrates the level of confidence and commitment Powerflex has to their customers.

The stock Genuine BMW front "upper" control arms (31108095667 & 31108095668) are great for standard daily driving and occasional spirited driving, but tend to fall flat on the track due to the soft rubber bushings causing excess deflection, creating undesirable handling characteristics. In order to address this issue, Turner now offers new Performance Front Tension Rods with upgraded FK Spherical Bearings! These tension rods offer multiple benefits over stock control arms, helping to keep your BMW under control and on the track. The biggest upgrade over the stock control arm is the replacement of the rubber bushing with JMX hardened Teflon-lined low-friction FK Spherical Bearings. This allows for smooth control arm articulation, without the standard mushy feel you'd expect from rubber bushings. As a result, you get a more responsive feel that inspires confidence lap after lap! The PTFE liner is chemically bonded to the inner diameter of the race. The liner offers a very high load carrying capacity and has greatly increased dynamic wear characteristics, offering robust reliability for both street and track use. Another benefit of these Performance Tension Rods is increased caster adjustment, allowing precise alignment for optimal turn-in response and to compensate for variances between left and right caster. Adjustable Tension Rod Features: Gun drilled and Blue Anodized 2024 Aluminum links to reduce unsprung weight Rotating 6061-T6 Aluminum Clamp design Hardened JMX high misalignment low friction 3-piece Teflon lined FK Heim joints/rod ends Stainless steel anti-dive spacers ASTM A574 socket head cap bolts are used for maximum articulation with a minimum tensile strength of 170,000 psi Sold as a pair. Here at Turner we understand the importance of an upgrade that will get the results you need on the track and still be tolerable on the drive around town. When it comes to control arms on the track, making them as stiff as you can (usually using solid mounts) is the best way to increase your driving precision by eliminating the deflection of rubber. The next best thing to create a balance would be to stiffen up the control arm with polyurethane, giving you the option of a more stock like feel with 80a or closer to the solid feel with 95a durometers.

When it comes to the E36 chassis you also get the options of choosing a stock centered design or going with the E30 inspired offset bushing to increase castor, further taking advantage of improvd handling. These poly bushings will give your control arms a direct connection between your suspension and the body of the car eliminating the slop felt under take-off and braking so you feel more in control of your vehicle.

This item fits the following BMWs that use a centered-style bushing:

1984-1991 E30 BMW 318i, 318is, 325, 325e, 325es, 325i, 325is

If the control arm bushings on your vehicle are beginning to fail, it will become quickly apparent. Suspension noise will be drastically increased, there will be steering wheel shake when hitting road hazards, and the entire car will have an all around loose feel. This can also lead to premature tire failure as alignment is negatively affected. Replace your control arm bushings to give your entire suspension a tighter feel. Rattling over bumps, a loose feeling when driving, and play in the front wheels is the main indicator that your bushings may be failing. The stock rubber tends to get dry rotted, wear out, and cause play in the attachment point for the control arm. Replace yours when they wear out, or when replacing a control arm that didn't include these pieces. Replace your inner control arm bushings with performance Powerflex bushings to tighten up your control and improve stability.

The stock Genuine BMW front "lower" control arms (31108095665 & 31108095666) are great for standard daily driving and occasional spirited driving, but they tend to fall flat on the track due to the soft rubber bushings causing excess deflection, creating undesirable handling characteristics. In order to address this issue, Turner now offers new Performance Adjustable Front Lower Control Arms! These control arms offer multiple benefits over stock control arms, helping to keep your BMW under control and on the track. In order to get the most out of your BMW M3/M4, these new control arms provide roll center, camber, and track width adjustment to dial in your alignment for optimal handling! Additionally, the ball joint angle has been corrected to allow for full articulation. Stainless Steel spacers are provided to correct roll center for lowered vehicles. These poly bushings will give your control arms a direct connection between your suspension and the body of the car eliminating the slop felt under take-off and braking so you feel more in control of your vehicle.

Powerflex street bushings are ideal for street driven vehicles and those that see occasional autocross or track time. Need bushings for a dedicated track car? Powerflex Black Series bushings are the ultimate in track and race bushings. Featuring 95A durometer polyurethane, Black Series bushings are 25% stiffer than street bushings. Engineered to perform, Powerflex performance polyurethane control arm bushings offer a supreme level of control, while still providing enough comfort for the street, with advanced polyurethane that reduces NVH that often accompanies lesser bushings. Expect improved steering feel, turn in, more responsive handling and overall improved chassis composure with Powerflex performance polyurethane control arm bushings.

Tasked with keeping the vehicles rear end firmly mounted while absorbing noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) factory rubber subframe bushings were engineered to provide a balance of control while keeping the ride quality soft and supple. As a factory bushings age, they become brittle and begin to harden. When this happens the bushing will actually shrink and allow excess play, or movement in the subframe. This is typically felt by a sudden jerk or "thunking" noise under acceleration and is a leading cause of "sloppy" or "loose" suspension feel. By replacing the bushings with full polyurethane this play is eliminated since the subframe is being held in place by a much stiffer material that will not harden or shrink over time. Additionally, the inherent stiffness of the urethane material translates body forces much more directly. This means steering and acceleration inputs from the driver are effectively transferred to the wheels and vital road information is transmitted properly from the wheels to the driver.

Stock rubber control arm bushings give a disconnected and mushy feel to the front suspension, especially when worn, as the bushing deflects more than it should. You get sloppy steering, vibrations, and poor handling which makes the car feel unstable. These urethane bushings are stiffer than stock rubber and will not deflect as much. This helps keep the alignment in check with less variation. The car feels more planted and confidence-inspiring. And a lifetime warranty means you'll likely never have to pay for another bushing ever again! Powerflex polyurethane subframe bushings are firmer than OEM bushings, resulting in better handling, a more planted rear-end, and more efficient suspension articulation - all with minimal sacrifice to ride quality. Powerflex is the number one selling suspension bushing manufacturer in Europe. Their experience with polyurethane bushing material and state-of-the art manufacturing techniques allows them to produce premium performance bushings, made to exact-fit standards. Powerflex performance polyurethane bushings are built to last longer than OEM rubber bushings, while improving performance and allowing for a more engaging driving experience. Use of Powerflex Copper Grease PCG1 is recommended for ease of installation. Periodic reapplication is recommended to extend squeak-free service life of bushings. Add negative camber to the front wheels of your BMW to increase the stock handling limitations and reduce the issues with outer tire wear during hard cornering. The increased camber adjustment allows for more responsive turn-ins and can slightly reduce the tire wear on the outer edge of the tire.

Benefits:

  • Replaces front upper control arms with ones that increase negative camber up to -0.5 degrees
  • Improves grip of front tires
  • Evens out tire wear during aggressive cornering

For BMW E46 and Z4 E85 & E86 owners looking to enhance the performance and handling of their vehicles, the Powerflex Black Series Front Control Arm - Rear Bushings with Brackets offer a valuable suspension upgrade. In this article, we'll explore the numerous advantages of integrating these high-quality bushings into your BMW, designed to optimize control and road-handling capabilities, ultimately taking your driving experience to the next level. Improved Handling and Stability: The BMW E46 and Z4 E85 & E86 models are already known for their impressive handling, and the Powerflex Front Control Arm - Rear Bushings with Brackets are engineered to enhance this feature. These bushings reduce sway and body roll during cornering, ensuring your vehicle remains stable and responsive, even when navigating tight turns and corners. This results in a more confident and enjoyable driving experience. Enhanced Cornering Performance: One of the primary benefits of these control arm bushings is their ability to optimize your vehicle's cornering performance. The Powerflex design provides increased rigidity, allowing for more precise and controlled cornering. Whether you're tackling winding mountain roads or maneuvering on a racetrack, you'll appreciate the improved grip and control these bushings provide. Mitigation of Understeer: Understeer, a common issue in many vehicles, occurs when the front tires lose grip during a turn. Upgrading to Powerflex Front Control Arm - Rear Bushings with Brackets helps address this issue by redistributing the load more evenly between the front and rear tires. This results in better balance and control, ensuring your BMW responds precisely to your commands in any situation. Durability and Longevity: These control arm bushings are constructed using high-quality materials, ensuring durability and a longer service life. They are engineered to withstand the rigors of daily driving and spirited performance, reducing wear and tear on your suspension components and extending the lifespan of your BMW's control arm system and related parts.

These bushings replace the stock rubber bushings and offer a better driving feel, increased lifespan, and better wheel alignment.

Rubber bushing allow for a lot more movement and are more susceptible to wear and tear from spirited driving and harsh weather conditions. Polyurethane is much more resistant to wear and is stiffer, reducing the total amount of movement that would normally affect the alignment negatively.

The SPL BMW F2X/F3X Front Lower Control Arms (FLCA) provide roll center, camber, and track width adjustment for the rear wheel drive (RWD) F2X/F3X BMWs while eliminating bushing deflection resulting in sharpened steering response and driving precision.

Negative Camber Benefits

The ability to run more negative camber greatly improves the peak lateral grip available. Adding negative camber results in the tire having an optimal contact patch as the body rolls due to cornering forces. This is especially important with better tires and a must-have for anyone looking to prevent excessive outer shoulder wear (and heating) on their tires due to a lack of camber.

Wider Front Track Width Benefits

Further handling improvements can be had by increasing the front track width from the factory 60.5" (F3X) or 59.9" (F2X) to be closer to the M3's 62.2". If you applied the M3's width to the M340i it would reduce the outer front tire loading by roughly 20 lbs and apply it to the inner front tire. The result would be greater peak grip (~0.04G), improved stability, and faster lap times.

Roll Center Correction Benefits

Lowering the F2X/F3X results in a greater distance between the front roll center and the center of gravity. This acts like a longer lever, creating more body roll, bumpsteer, and requiring additional static camber angle to maintain the same handling. The SPL front lower control arms allow the roll center to be corrected for a wide range of ride heights to improve handling and stability.

The lower control arms come with a ride height sensor bracket to maintain the factory ride height sensor location, regardless of length of the arm to keep those finicky BMW chassis electronics happy.
