BMW Control Arm Replacements & Upgrades

Control arms, and their integrated ball joints, are some of the most crucial components on a BMW suspension. The control arms literally control the wheel and suspension as they go through their range of motions. They do more than just keep the alignment in a constant spec - they are a vital locating component for the suspension itself. A faulty or worn control arm or ball joint is a very dangerous and potentially life-threatening problem so make sure they are inspected and replaced at regular intervals.

Most control arms for BMWs consist of an inner and outer ball joint made of plastic, rubber, Delrin, or metal and covered in grease with a rubber boot to seal it from the outside. The ball joint rotates and spins as the control arm goes through its movements and that will wear the ball joint and make it loose. The grease inside the housing can also get used up, evaporate, or become contaminated from moisture and foreign particles. As the ball joint becomes worn it can result in excess movement within the housing. Your steering and handling will become less precise and there is usually a light clunking or clicking sound. In rare and extreme cases the ball joint can separate from the control arm completely, leading to a total loss of suspension and steering control. You should have the ball joint play checked annually and replace them every 3-4 years. Most track organizations will not allow a car if they are older than three years.

Control arms also take abuse from impacts and handling forces. Aluminum control arms will generally bend and prevent an accurate alignment. Steel control arms will crack and fracture and require close inspection annually and replacement every 3-4 years.

We sell OE BMW, OEM, and performance upgrade control arms from proven manufacturers. The control arm is so important to a BMW suspension that we insist on only top quality brands and designs and will never sell a control arm based on price alone. We also have upgrade packages with superior designs and better bushing options and we have bundled these together with valuable package savings.

This OEM Lemforder Level 1 suspension rebuild kit for the E39 addresses the symptoms related to the included components in the front suspension. Common failure items here result in imprecise, wandering steering, or more commonly: the dreaded "death wobble" at 55mph.

Including all four front control arms with bushings, this kit is ideal for a car with tight suspension but with loose ball joints.

Control arm bushings play a key role in connecting the wheels to the chassis of the vehicle. Tasked with keeping suspension geometry in check while absorbing noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) factory rubber bushings were engineered to provide a balance of comfort and control. As a factory bushing ages, it becomes brittle and begins to harden. When this happens the bushing will actually shrink and allow excess play in the suspension joint. This is typically felt by a sudden jerk forward after the car comes to a stop and is a leading cause of "sloppy" or "loose" suspension feel. By replacing the bushing with a full polyurethane unit or using a bushing insert, this play is eliminated since the suspension joint is being supported by a much stiffer material that will not harden or shrink over time. Additionally, the inherent stiffness of the urethane material translates body forces much more directly. This means steering inputs from the driver are effectively transferred to the wheels and vital road information is transmitted properly from the wheels to the driver.

Powerflex Black Series bushings are the ultimate in track and race bushings. Featuring 95A durometer polyurethane, Black Series bushings are 25% stiffer than street bushings. Engineered to perform, Powerflex performance polyurethane control arm bushings offer a supreme level of control, while still providing enough comfort for the street, with advanced polyurethane that reduces NVH that often accompanies lesser bushings. Expect improved steering feel, turn in, more responsive handling and overall improved chassis composure with Powerflex performance polyurethane control arm bushings.

Poweflex is a leading manufacturer of aftermarket suspension bushings. Using state of the art design and manufacturing, all replacement bushings are engineered to out-perform and out-last the ones that came in the car. Each line of bushings is meticulously tested and then re-tested to ensure perfect fitment and enduring quality through the life of the vehicle. A full lifetime warranty backs every one of their products and demonstrates the level of confidence and commitment Powerflex has to their customers.

Over the years, the road takes a serious toll on your suspension. Pot holes, speed bumps, and road hazards all contribute to a sloppy, weak suspension. To give a better feel to your driving experience, change components as they wear to improve safety and ride comfort. One item to replace is the control arm. After years of service, the non-serviceable ball joints and other components can begin to wear out causing the steering to not feel as tight, as well as steering wobble and clunking when turning. If replacing any part of your front or rear suspension, it is best to either do it in pairs (both left and right sides), or examine parts that are prone to failure. This will provide the most service life out of replacement parts and assure they are all performing properly.

These high-performance rear toe links are designed to eliminate the vagueness and flex associated with the stock linkages, which used rubber bushings and an alloy designed to flex under load. During hard acceleration and braking, this can actually change the toe angle, and cause the car to feel unstable during hard cornering. The flex is eliminated by utilizing Teflon coated, machined steel rod ends with billet aluminum rod for the links. The Rods have been machined with a hex in the center to aid adjustment.

When an E9X is lowered beyond the limits of just lowering springs, the rear wheels toe-in excessively. This excessive rear toe leads to premature wear, that many people attribute to an increase in negative camber. It has become a common belief that an extremely low vehicle will wear the tires wrong as a matter of consequence. It has become standard practice to go as low as you can and proceed to replace your tires every five to ten thousand miles. Whats more is that when the vehicle reaches a certain ride height, the factory arms become maxed out and there is no way to compensate and dial in the proper toe. You're left with an improperly aligned vehicle that is in effect worse off than it was with the stock suspension installed.

This is not only uneconomical but improper and unsafe. ECS Tuning is proud to offer a solution for this problem in the form of Rogue Engineering E9X adjustable rear toe arms. These arms allow for greater toe adjustment on vehicles that have been lowered with a coilover suspension. With the toe set properly the tires can contact the road properly this maximizes grip and minimizes wear.

Features:

  • 100% machined and anodized, 6061-T6 lightweight aluminum arms
  • High-strength, 3-piece, rod end (with carbon fiber reinforced, PTFE race) offers longer life for street compared to standard rod ends
  • SEALS-IT Rod end seals keep dirt, water, and other contaminants out
  • Rod ends feature grease fittings, to allow for rod end serviceability.
  • Lighter than stock!  (Stock is 875g, RE arms are 640g)
  • Extremely easy installation and adjustment (your alignment shop will LOVE you!)

BMW’s are known to have failure prone rear control arm bushings. The flexible rubber bushings, even those found in M performance models, allow significant movement of the rear wheels to maximize daily driving comfort, but also allow considerable alignment change. This results in a disconnected and numb road feel, standing between you and a confidence inspiring driving experience. Eventually the fluid filled rubber bushings fatigue and crack due to continual deflection and ozone degradation, and eventually the damping fluid leaks out resulting in complete failure. For the enthusiast looking for superior performance and longevity with a crisp, confidence-inspiring driving experience, our sealed ball joint monoballs are the best solution available! Our experience with spherical front control arm ball joints go back to those we designed and used in our IMSA E90 328i and E92 M3 racecars (GS class Champions in 2011). We wanted to offer F80, F82, F83, and F87 owners similar levels of handling precision and control for the track and street. The bearing housing is precision CNC machined from 6061-T6 anodized aluminum and features a knurled OD to ensure a perfect press fit, and utilize a sealed OEM BMW ball joint for exceptional quality and durability, making them completely at home on both the street and track with no compromise. We have done extensive street, autocross, and track testing to ensure the ball joint used in this bushing design excels in each setting. The advantage of a sealed ball joint is that it eliminates all unwanted deflection while still allowing complete bind-free movement throughout suspension travel, resulting in exceptional control of wheel alignment. What you get is superior steering precision, turn-in response, direct braking feedback, and better handling. In short, if you're seeking the ultimate in precise, predictable handling and control, with crisp braking response and a long service life that’s equally at home on the street or track - look no further. We have you covered. We offer these control arms with the monoball bushings pre-installed for your convenience. Since BMW recommends the control arms be replaced for every other bushing change, we prefer to sell these as a pre-assembled set. The bushings are also available separately if you wish to source your own control arms. Features: Bearing housing Precision CNC machined from 6061-T6 blue anodized aluminum Knurled OD to provide the perfect fit for the wide range of thrust arm bore diameters among brands. CNC machined 304ss ball joint sleeve inserts, providing a precision fit between the ball joint and the subframe. Bearing OEM BMW sealed and greased ball joint for exceptional durability and service life. Performance Nearly instantaneous, crisp steering and braking response. Maintenance free, long lasting performance. Improved road feel without undesirable NVH.

This upper front control arm (BMW may call it a thrust arm or tension strut) comes with the inner bushings and is a direct replacement for the original part, made by Tier 1 supplier Lemforder.

Control arms, and their integrated ball joints, are some of the most crucial components on a BMW suspension. The control arms literally control the wheel and suspension as they go through their range of motions. A faulty or worn control arm or ball joint is a very dangerous and potentially life-threatening problem so make sure they are inspected and replaced at regular intervals. For a street-driven car we advise yearly inspection and a full replacement every 3-4 years. For track-driven cars these should be inspected before every event and replaced every two years.

Swapping in E46 control arms into your E30 or E36 will significantly increase negative camber by widening the track width and will also give you more clearance for more steering angle. Condor's conversion bushings are machined from UHMW due to its high rigidity and low coefficient of friction allowing for minimal suspension bushing deflection (geometry change). They've designed them offset to re-center the wheel and give your e30/e36 the correct caster. They will include a stainless-steel insert that tightly presses over the hex pattern on the E46 control arms. You do not need to grind down your control arms or make any other modifications to your chassis. Please note that you will need to use E36 outer tie rods and E90 inner tie rods when installing in an E30 or E36.

Fitment:
Fits the following Meyle and Lemforder arms with 21-22MM Hex.

LEMFORDER ZHP - 31122282121 & 31122282122
LEMFORDER - 31126777851 & 31126777852
MEYLE HD - 31126777851 & 31126777852
*Please note that Meyle makes a standard e46 control arm and a Heavy Duty control arm. SOME HD arms have a hex that is larger in size. These HD control arms may need to be shaved 1-2 mm for proper fitment.

These upper A-arms are an adjustable version of the stock upper control arms. They feature an adjustable outer ball joint that changes the camber spec. These are great for dialing in up to half a degree of camber quickly and easily. An alignment pin conveniently sets it in the stock location. The inner bushing is a heavier-duty version of the stock rubber design. The stiffer rubber means less flex and deflection which helps in steering response and handling. Adjusting camber can help with handling and steering response. Adding negative camber is useful in spirited driving on secondary roads and even on/off ramps and can help with tire-fender clearance. This is a direct replacement for the original arm.

Replaces factory BMW part numbers 31126775967, 31126779871, and 31126779908.

Price is for the Left and Right pair (fits either side).

Powerflex Black Series bushings are the ultimate in track and race bushings. Featuring 95A durometer polyurethane, Black Series bushings are 25% stiffer than street bushings. Stock rubber control arm bushings give a disconnected and mushy feel to the front suspension, especially when worn, as the bushing deflects more than it should. You get sloppy steering, vibrations, and poor handling which makes the car feel unstable. These urethane bushings are stiffer than stock rubber and will not deflect as much. This helps keep the alignment in check with less variation. The car feels more planted and confidence-inspiring. And a lifetime warranty means you'll likely never have to pay for another bushing ever again! Powerflex is the number one selling suspension bushing manufacturer in Europe. Their experience with polyurethane bushing material and state-of-the art manufacturing techniques allows them to produce premium performance bushings, made to exact-fit standards. Powerflex performance polyurethane bushings are built to last longer than OEM rubber bushings, while improving performance and allowing for a more engaging driving experience. Powerflex has extensive knowledge and design experience in automotive suspension and chassis systems. These design skills have been combined with advanced polyurethane manufacturing techniques leading to the development of a wide range of high-performance automotive polyurethane components that are second to none in quality and performance. The special type of polyurethane used by Powerflex is an advanced proprietary material which has unique properties. This ensures that each product not only offers the high-performance capabilities our customers expect, but also the exceptionally long life and quality they demand - without increased vibration or noise.

Control arm bushings play a key role in connecting the wheels to the chassis of the vehicle. Tasked with keeping suspension geometry in check while absorbing noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) factory rubber bushings were engineered to provide a balance of comfort and control. Replace your inner control arm bushings with performance Powerflex bushings to tighten up your control and improve stability. *Door Buster Special - New Product* This is a replacement part that uses the Black Series material to boost stiffness over the original part by 18% to withstand increased loading seen by this position on the car. If the control arm bushings on your vehicle are beginning to fail, it will become quickly apparent. Suspension noise will be drastically increased, there will be steering wheel shake when hitting road hazards, and the entire car will have an all around loose feel. This can also lead to premature tire failure as alignment is negatively affected. Replace your control arm bushings to give your entire suspension a tighter feel. Rattling over bumps, a loose feeling when driving, and play in the front wheels is the main indicator that your bushings may be failing. The stock rubber tends to get dry rotted, wear out, and cause play in the attachment point for the control arm. Replace yours when they wear out, or when replacing a control arm that didn't include these pieces.

These urethane performance bushings replace the stock rubber front upper control arm bushings on the 2006-2010 E60 525xi/528xi/530xi/535xi xDrive AWD models. Stock rubber control arm bushings give a disconnected and mushy feel to the front suspension, especially when worn as the bushing deflects more than it should. You get sloppy steering, vibrations, and poor handling which makes the car feel unstable. These urethane bushings are stiffer than stock rubber and will not deflect as much. This helps keep the alignment in check with less variation. The car feels more planted and confidence-inspiring. And a limited lifetime warranty means you'll likely never have to pay for another bushing ever again.

BMW’s are known to have failure prone front thrust arm bushings.  The flexible rubber bushings, even those found in M performance models, allow significant movement of the front wheels to maximize daily driving comfort, but also allow considerable alignment change.

Our experience with spherical front control arm ball joints goes back to those we designed and used in our IMSA E90 328i and E92 M3 race cars (GS class Champions in 2011). We wanted to offer as many BMW owners possible a similar level of handling, precision, and control for the track and street.

Utilizing a sealed OEM BMW ball joint for exceptional quality and durability, making them completely at home on both the street and track with no compromise.

We offer these control arms with the monoball bearings pre-installed for your convenience. Since BMW recommends the control arms be replaced for every other bushing change, we prefer to sell these as a pre-assembled set. The bushings are also available separately if you wish to source your own control arms.
