With this breather simply remove your oil cap, install the breather, and instantly free up horsepower, improve turbo draining, remove crankcase pressure, all while adding a cool look to your engine bay.

The N54 suffers from a weak point in its crankshaft. It has been reported that when increasing the power to the engine, the crank hub can move or spin slightly under an extreme load. This is most apparent under high-rev downshifts or in the case of increased boost pressure which creates more stress on the engines rotating assembly. In order to keep this from happening, the crank bolt must be secured to the hub to keep it from backing off, but this can be a tricky solution since a simple dab of Loctite will not suffice. 

Here is an easy, and cost-effective way to secure the situation; The VTT N54 crank bolt capture. This lightweight and durable ring slips over the head of the crank bolt fully encapsulating it, and locks it to the crank hub and eliminating its ability to spin. The VTT-CBC is 100% Billet Aircraft Grade Aluminum, Anodized black to protect it from the elements, and give it a stealth look. What's more is that it weighs only 1.3 Oz's meaning you aren't adding excess mass to the crankshaft which will avoid any imbalance or vibration issues.

While this is not a full fix for all crank hub spinning issues, the engineers at Vargas have found most issues have stemmed from the bolt itself backing out, and this is a great way to keep that from happening. Extremely lightweight at only 1.3 Oz's it adds virtually no weight to the crank which is important for balance and vibration.

Under certain conditions, the N55 crank hub likes to spin, without warning and even when the engine is in perfect health. The engineers at Vargas saw and dealt with this problem time and again, and they saw fit to do something about it. This hub uses a proprietary "Spline Lock" technology that uses high tolerance machined splines which press into the crank, and positively lock the hub to the crank. The splines are machined in such a way that rotational forces drive the hub, and splines deeper into the crank meaning when the hub encounters a situation that would normally slip a stock hub the splined hub is driven into the crank to keep it in place (much like a splined extractor). Features: Installs the same as a stock hub Does NOT require the crank to be drilled for pins Manufactured from Harndered 17-4SS We suggest the Crank Hub System ONLY be installed by a qualified shop or technician. The crankcase oil vent system on the N52/N54 is one of its weakest and cheaply designed systems. We see crankcase vent issues on even stock engines but with more boost the problems are exponential. This Vargas upgraded PCV valve, and an oil catch can, are what the N54 engine needs and may alleviate most of your oil and boost leak issues. The PCV valve is supposed to let oil either return to the oil pan or pass through the intake manifold and get burned up in the combustion chamber. However, BMW used a weak plastic vent valve that doesn't seal well when under boost. Instead of  closing and venting the oil out of the intake, it's forced through this valve and into the intake and coating your valves with oil residue and carbon. Most boost equals more oil forcing its way by. This upgraded N54 PCV valve uses higher grade materials, including aluminum, to provide a better seal and prevent oil from entering the intake. It's an easy install and a must-have item when considering any turbo work.

It is a well-known issue on the BMW N54/55 platforms that your serpentine belt can fail for various reasons. When this happens, there is a high chance of the belt getting sucked behind the front damper pulley and then being pushed past the crank seal into your oil pan. From there it can get sucked into the oil pick up causing total engine failure. Even if you do not lose the engine, it is a COSTLY repair to remove the sub-frame and drop the oil pan to remove the belt. The best way to combat this is to watch for oil leaks and keep up on your maintenance. BUT, even with those preventative measures, pre-mature belt failure can occur. This crank seal guard installs over your front crank seal and will keep the belt from being sucked in if a belt failure does occur. This is a cheap way to ensure you do not end up having to replace your motor from oil starvation due to an ingested belt. Vargas' seal is different from those already on market in two major ways. Firstly, it is not offensively priced. Secondly, it is 100% billet with no welds on the tabs to break, no cheap bent thin steel pieces. 100% Billet 6061-T6 aluminum, anodized black for long-term corrosion resistance. Crank Seal Guard includes: One VTT Billet N54/55 Crank Seal Guard Two extended 12.9 Grade bolts, and two stainless washers We highly recommend you install WITH a crank bolt capture at the same time, as you have to remove the damper anyway. Vargas has developed a solution to problematic PCV systems! Stock diaphragms on the gen-1 B58 Valve cover are fragile and can crack or tear over time. This can cause loss of crankcase vacuum and smoking. The VTT PCV cap replaces the factory plastic cap with a billet aluminum piece which uses a Billet Banjo fitting, and VTT's Vaccum/Boost adapter to move vacuum directly from the head ports to the manifold. This cap will also allow you to run a catch can on the low side if desired. VTT Recommends using this cap alongside their High Side Catch Can and crankcase breather for maximum efficiency. Installation is as simple as popping the stock cap off, removing the diaphragm, and placing the VTT components in place. Vargas has introduced their new Billet Power Steering pulleys for the N54 engine! A well-known issue with the N54 with Hydraulic power steering is the plastic pulley either hitting the subframe, or breaking on its own. This can result in the belt to be ejected from the pulley, and leave you stranded with no serpentine belt. This also increases the chance of sucking the belt into the engine through the front seal. Put an end to the dreaded plastic PS pulley issues with the VTT 100% Billet Aluminum PS pulley. These are constructed from 6061-T6 aluminum and anodize in one of 4 colors (Black, Red, Blue, and Clear) for a great look, and long-lasting finish. These weigh 11oz, very close to the weight of a stock pulley, and are lighter than the cast aluminum versions on the market.

The VTT B58/S58 Head Port Block-Off kit is designed to either seal off the factory head ports used by the OEM low-side PCV system. These ports in the cylinder head utilize engine vacuum to evacuate crankcase gases, but in the process, can allow oil to enter the intake manifold, leading to valve carbon buildup and other performance issues over time. The Block-Off kit offered by VTT completely seals the factory head ports to prevent oil intrusion and unwanted vacuum leaks. This kit comes with 1 set (both turbos) of Stainless Steel wear matched bushing, and flapper assembly, Wastegate arm, rod end, and Stainless steel 8mm C clip. These parts custom made for VTT upgrade the flapper assembly to a full 12.6MM or 1/2" flapper arm, and bushing compared to the stock 11.5mm. They also get rid of the 6mm rod end connection to a full 8mm connection with a stainless steel C clip. There is no better N54 Waste Gate upgrade on the market, and guess what? We also offer them for less than other upgrades which use the stock bushing size, rod end, and inferior materials. If you want to fix this right the first time, this is the kit for you! *Please note, assembly is required. This kit can only be installed with the turbos removed from the vehicle, and stock wastegate assembly removed from the housing. Looking to get rid of the troublesome and expensive DI injectors on your BMW N54 and move to PI only and a standalone? If so VTT has you covered with its new N54 PI delete kit. This kit allows you to SAFELY remove the DI injectors, install our delete fittings, and run PI only. We machined these deletes from 310 Stainless for extreme heat, and corrosion resistance, and include 3 hold downs. These DI deletes COMPLETELY get rid of all factory provisions, including the seal. If the seal is left intact with no fuel to cool the injector or delete it will quickly overheat and melt the delicate seal causing combustion gasses to escape the engine creating misfires, and worse possibly damaging your injector bore on the cylinder head. Our deletes are machined to be a press fit into the cylinder, and can be either cooled with liquid nitrogen, and dropped in, or tapped in with a hammer, and then held down with the included hold downs. We also include M6 tapped holes on the top of each one in case they need to be removed you can attach a slide hammer, and remove the delete. Under certain conditions, the N55 crank hub likes to spin, without warning and even when the engine is in perfect health. The engineers at Vargas saw and dealt with this problem time and again, and they saw fit to do something about it. This hub uses a proprietary "Spline Lock" technology that uses high tolerance machined splines which press into the crank, and positively lock the hub to the crank. The splines are machined in such a way that rotational forces drive the hub, and splines deeper into the crank meaning when the hub encounters a situation that would normally slip a stock hub the splined hub is driven into the crank to keep it in place (much like a splined extractor). Features: Installs the same as a stock hub Does NOT require the crank to be drilled for pins Manufactured from Harndered 17-4SS We suggest the Crank Hub System ONLY be installed by a qualified shop or technician. Anyone with a modified N54 knows the risks involved. Upping the performance of any engine can come with some inherent risk; if we add more boost but not fuel, detonation will occur (or worse). Furthermore, improper installation, maintenance, or operation can turn a perfectly healthy engine into a paperweight. The worst failures, however, are the ones we don't plan for. When the engine simply can't handle the stresses its put under, or the design is such that it simply does not support extreme conditions. Enter the N54 crank hub. Under certain conditions, it likes to spin without warning, even when the engine is in perfect health. The engineers at Vargas saw and dealt with this problem time and again, and they saw fit to do something about it. This hub uses a proprietary "Spline Lock" technology that uses high tolerance machined splines that press into the crank and positively lock the hub to the crank. The splines are machined in such a way that rotational forces drive the hub, and splines deeper into the crank meaning when the hub encounters a situation that would normally slip a stock hub the splined hub is driven into the crank to keep it in place (much like a splined extractor). Vargas spent many months testing, and retesting this design, utilizing well over 10 different samples to come to the final production version. During testing, the final hub managed to break the testing rig before slipping. These have been bench-tested, and real-world tested on the VTT N54 race car spinning 8K RPM, and making well over 900WHP. Vargas Stage 1 N54 turbochargers are brand new and include all housing, wheels, and internals. These are brand new units and thus do not require a core charge, making the process easier and simpler. All VTT turbos come with a performance TD04 upgraded thrust to extend the life of the turbochargers. The stock thrust system has shown to be prone to failure and upgraded thrust parts were created to remedy this. The upgraded thrust option consists of an upgraded thrust bearing and a 30% increase in surface area on all complimenting thrust pieces. Every VTT Stage 1 upgrade includes a Billet VTT Compressor wheel. These are fully forged billet wheels, utilizing the ultra-efficient 6×6 blade HTA wheel design as well as extended tip technology to increase airflow a solid 20% over the cast 14T wheels. The use of an aluminum aftermarket charge pipe, and BOV combo is always recommended with upgraded turbos. Add the VTT Cold side Charge pipe, and Turbosmart Raceport BOV to your order for just $349! Vargas builds on their stock replacement turbo kits with this Stage 1 upgrade. Using the stock housings but with improved internals, this N54 turbo upgrade is good up to 470whp. Stage 1 is a hybrid of stock and upgraded internals - a new larger higher-flow cast compressor wheel matched with the stock turbine wheel. The Vargas stainless wastegate arms are also part of the rebuild. The Vargas standard rebuild is good up to 400whp so Stage 1 gives you a more capable turbo system to match your upgrade goals.

Vargas Turbo Technologies has been in business since 1979, offering rebuilt and re-engineered turbo solutions. With the N54, they identified a need for both cost-effective turbo replacements and proven turbo upgrades. The biggest complaint on N54 turbos is the rattle from the wastegates. The factory wastegates have actuator arms that lose their tension very easily, resulting in an annoying rattle. N54 wastegate rattle is the biggest complaint we hear from our customers. Vargas rebuilds each turbo assembly with OEM internals and replaces the actuator arm with a stainless steel arm of their own design. Because the Stage 1 uses stock BMW/Mitsubishi turbo housings, all of the stock turbo plumbing and intake hoses will match up. It's recommended that the rest of the system be upgraded to handle your tuning goals. The final Vargas rebuilt turbos are better than the factory rebuilds and at a lower cost!

Two other upgrades are also offered for Stage 1 -

  • TD04 thrust bearing upgrade - stronger and 30% more surface area than the stock thrust bearing for better bearing life and less stress
  • Billet Aluminum compressor wheel - stronger and more efficient compressor wheel than stock for 20% better airflow

 

Silicone inlet and turbo manifold pipes are also strongly recommended as upgrades over the stock plastic and aluminum pipes. Since both are prone to cracks, the silicone will be a lot stronger and almost no chance of a disappointing boost leak. Turbo replacement is the best time to add the silicone hoses. There are two styles of turbo inlet pipes - with stock diverter valves (DV) or with aftermarket blow-off valve (BOV). For the turbo manifold, there is no standardized connection to the intercooler so you will need to make note of which type you have and select the appropriate adapter from the options list.
Option A (+$25) - 2.5" and 90* turn up from the intercooler (CPE, AA, ER Sport, CXRacing)
Option B - 2.5" and angled up from the intercooler (AD Engineering, ETS, Helix, Cobb, ER Compeition)
Option C (+$25) - 3.0" and angled up from the intercooler (VRSF)
Option D (+$25) - 2.75" and angled up from the intercooler (Wagner EVO)
Option E (+$50) - 3.0" and straight out from the intercooler (AA Race)
Option F (+$25) - 2.5" and straight out from the intercooler (Forge)
Option G (+$15) - 3.0" and straight up from the interooler (AMS)

 

Install Kit - an Install Kit is also offered that includes all of the additional parts and pieces that will need to be replaced during this install (gaskets, hardware, etc).

Oil Recommendation - modern engine oil is formulated for emissions and to be environmentally friendly. The additives in current oil lowers the oil's ability to withstand high temperatures and stresses, lowering its shear strength and its lubricating properties. Vargas recommends oils with high ZDDP (zinc and phosphorus) content that will better protect and cool the turbo bearings. Examples of high-zinc oils are Red Line Race, Red Line Euro, Motul 300V Racing, Joe Gibbs Racing, Valvoline VR-1 oil, and most Diesel-spec oils that you can buy off-the-shelf. Some oils, especially the Race type, will need more frequent oil changes and may be harmful to catalytic converters.

WHP rating: 470. This rating is used to compare various stage of Vargas turbo kits. There is no advertised horsepower gain with this kit as it depends on your other mods and tuning. The rating is provided as a reference to use in your tuning planning. Custom N54 tuning is recommended to match these turbos to your existing mods and upgrades.
