BMW Control Arm Replacements & Upgrades

Control arms, and their integrated ball joints, are some of the most crucial components on a BMW suspension. The control arms literally control the wheel and suspension as they go through their range of motions. They do more than just keep the alignment in a constant spec - they are a vital locating component for the suspension itself. A faulty or worn control arm or ball joint is a very dangerous and potentially life-threatening problem so make sure they are inspected and replaced at regular intervals.

Most control arms for BMWs consist of an inner and outer ball joint made of plastic, rubber, Delrin, or metal and covered in grease with a rubber boot to seal it from the outside. The ball joint rotates and spins as the control arm goes through its movements and that will wear the ball joint and make it loose. The grease inside the housing can also get used up, evaporate, or become contaminated from moisture and foreign particles. As the ball joint becomes worn it can result in excess movement within the housing. Your steering and handling will become less precise and there is usually a light clunking or clicking sound. In rare and extreme cases the ball joint can separate from the control arm completely, leading to a total loss of suspension and steering control. You should have the ball joint play checked annually and replace them every 3-4 years. Most track organizations will not allow a car if they are older than three years.

Control arms also take abuse from impacts and handling forces. Aluminum control arms will generally bend and prevent an accurate alignment. Steel control arms will crack and fracture and require close inspection annually and replacement every 3-4 years.

We sell OE BMW, OEM, and performance upgrade control arms from proven manufacturers. The control arm is so important to a BMW suspension that we insist on only top quality brands and designs and will never sell a control arm based on price alone. We also have upgrade packages with superior designs and better bushing options and we have bundled these together with valuable package savings.

Control arm bushings play a key role in connecting the wheels to the chassis of the vehicle. Tasked with keeping suspension geometry in check while absorbing noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) factory rubber bushings were engineered to provide a balance of comfort and control. As a factory bushing ages, it becomes brittle and begins to harden. When this happens the bushing will actually shrink and allow excess play in the suspension joint. This is typically felt by a sudden jerk forward after the car comes to a stop and is a leading cause of "sloppy" or "loose" suspension feel. By replacing the bushing with a full polyurethane unit or using a bushing insert, this play is eliminated since the suspension joint is being supported by a much stiffer material that will not harden or shrink over time. Additionally, the inherent stiffness of the urethane material translates body forces much more directly. This means steering inputs from the driver are effectively transferred to the wheels and vital road information is transmitted properly from the wheels to the driver.

Powerflex street bushings are ideal for street driven vehicles and those that see occasional autocross or track time. Need bushings for a dedicated track car? Powerflex Black Series bushings are the ultimate in track and race bushings. Featuring 95A durometer polyurethane, Black Series bushings are 25% stiffer than street bushings. Engineered to perform, Powerflex performance polyurethane control arm bushings offer a supreme level of control, while still providing enough comfort for the street, with advanced polyurethane that reduces NVH that often accompanies lesser bushings. Expect improved steering feel, turn in, more responsive handling and overall improved chassis composure with Powerflex performance polyurethane control arm bushings.

Poweflex is a leading manufacturer of aftermarket suspension bushings. Using state of the art design and manufacturing, all replacement bushings are engineered to out-perform and out-last the ones that came in the car. Each line of bushings is meticulously tested and then re-tested to ensure perfect fitment and enduring quality through the life of the vehicle. A full lifetime warranty backs every one of their products and demonstrates the level of confidence and commitment Powerflex has to their customers.

A byproduct of multi-link suspension arrangements is a dynamic change in the car’s alignment settings- when making an adjustment to one attribute like camber, track width and toe will follow. This is especially true for the E9x cars, as the original BMW camber eccentric bolt has an impact on toe as well. Alignments are made faster and simpler when using a set of aftermarket lower arms, enabling the alignment tech to easily reset toe after adjusting camber. The standard toe link kit by Fall Line Motorsports is designed to simplify toe changes at an alignment facility while still keeping cost reasonable. The standard toe link kit keeps costs down by using a traditional jam nut design in a sturdy billet arm. Adjustable threaded rod ends turn into and out of the arm for a wide range of toe adjustment, and enable an alignment technician to easily set toe on a lowered car.

This control arm is an aftermarket OEM alternative part that comes with a 1-year warranty. They use the same designs as the original BMW parts on your car so they meet OEM standards for fitment and operation. We have compared these parts to the Genuine BMW and OEM brands and found few differences. This package is an unbeatable money-saving bundle to restore your E34's precise handling and steering. We also offer all of the OE or OEM brands if you are more comfortable with those levels of quality and performance or are planning to track or autocross your car (the cast components of the aftermarket kit will not be as good as the OEM parts on the track).

The aftermarket arm has the bushing pre-installed. The OEM and BMW arms include the bushing but it must be pressed into the arm by a qualified technician.

This is typically felt by a sudden jerk forward after the car comes to a stop and is a leading cause of a "sloppy" or "loose" suspension feel. Powerflex street bushings are ideal for street-driven vehicles and those that see occasional autocross or track time. Need bushings for a dedicated track car? Powerflex Black Series bushings are the ultimate in track and race bushings. Featuring 95A durometer polyurethane, Black Series bushings are 25% stiffer than street bushings. For BMW F10, F06, F12, and F13 xDrive owners seeking to maximize their vehicle's performance and handling, the Powerflex Front Lower Control Arm Inner Bushings are an essential upgrade. In this article, we'll explore the numerous benefits of integrating these bushings into your BMW xDrive, designed to elevate your driving experience and enhance control and road-handling capabilities. Enhanced Stability and Handling: BMW F10, F06, F12, and F13 xDrive models are already renowned for their impressive handling, and the Powerflex Front Lower Control Arm Inner Bushings take this to the next level. These bushings minimize sway and body roll during cornering, ensuring your vehicle remains stable and responsive, even when navigating sharp turns and curves. The result is a more confident and enjoyable driving experience. Superior Cornering Performance: One of the key advantages of these control arm inner bushings is their ability to optimize cornering performance. The Powerflex design offers increased rigidity, allowing for more precise and controlled cornering. Whether you're tackling winding mountain roads or pushing your BMW on a racetrack, you'll appreciate the improved grip and control these bushings deliver. Understeer Mitigation: Understeer is a common challenge for many vehicles, occurring when the front tires lose grip during a turn. Upgrading to Powerflex BMW F10/F06/F12/F13 xDrive Front Lower Control Arm Inner Bushings helps address this issue by redistributing the load more evenly between the front and rear tires. This results in better balance and control, ensuring your xDrive responds precisely to your commands in any situation. Longevity and Durability: Constructed with high-quality materials, these control arm inner bushings are designed to withstand the demands of daily driving and spirited performance. They reduce wear and tear on your suspension components, extending the lifespan of your BMW's control arm system and related parts. OE / OEM Cross Reference Numbers: 31126777743

For someone looking for superior performance and longevity these sealed monoball bushings are the best upper thrust bearing you can buy for an E82 1-series or E9X 3-series. The advantage of a monoball bearing is that it will not deflect under load. All of the rubber bushings move in all sorts of directions and that changes your alignment, especially when used with big brake kits or when driven hard. The condition worsens as the bushing wears out. The Dinan monoball sits in a CNC machined aluminum housing which has zero deflection. The monoball allows complete freedom of movement but only at the desired angles. What you get is superior steering precision, better handling from more consistent alignment, and almost infinite bushing life. And thanks to the inner liner and sealed rubber boots there's none of the extra noise or reduced service life of fully solid race bushings.

Control arms, and their integrated ball joints, are some of the most crucial components on a BMW suspension. The control arms literally control the wheel and suspension as they go through their range of motions. A faulty or worn control arm or ball joint is a very dangerous and potentially life-threatening problem so make sure they are inspected and replaced at regular intervals. For a street-driven car we advise yearly inspection and a full replacement every 3-4 years. For track-driven cars these should be inspected before every event and replaced every two years.

Meyle is a German brand in business since 1958 and all of their products are TUV approved and meet or exceed ISO standards. Heavy Duty components are designed to provide significantly long lifespans than other aftermarket and stock OE components. Each part includes a 4 year warranty.

As a leading source of high performance BMW parts and accessories since 1993, we at Turner Motorsport are honored to be the go-to supplier for tens of thousands of enthusiasts the world over. With over two decades of parts, service, and racing experience under our belt, we provide only quality performance and replacement parts.  All of our performance parts are those we would (and do!) install and run on our own cars, as well as replacement parts that are Genuine BMW or from OEM manufacturers. We only offer parts we know you can trust to perform!

*Vehicles built before 12/2006 will also require the up dated ball joint part number 31103438623, as the control arm end where the ball joint passes through is now thicker and original ball joints are too short.

Fits the following BMWs:
12/2006-2010 E83 BMW X3

These urethane performance bushings replace the stock rubber front upper control arm bushings on the 2006-2010 E60 525xi/528xi/530xi/535xi xDrive AWD models. Stock rubber control arm bushings give a disconnected and mushy feel to the front suspension, especially when worn as the bushing deflects more than it should. You get sloppy steering, vibrations, and poor handling which makes the car feel unstable. These urethane bushings are stiffer than stock rubber and will not deflect as much. This helps keep the alignment in check with less variation. The car feels more planted and confidence-inspiring. And a limited lifetime warranty means you'll likely never have to pay for another bushing ever again.

Referred to as a tension strut by BMW, this control arm attaches to the front subframe and your front wheel carrier. The fluid-filled bushings found in these control arms are great for comfort but are known to fail much earlier than traditional rubber bushings, requiring them to be replaced. This control arm is one of two control arms found in the front left of your BMW. This is the forward/front control arm featuring a curved design.

Rear trailing arm bushings serve the key purpose of keeping rear suspension triangulated and the vehicle moving where it's directed to. Though failure prone, even factory-fresh OEM rubber bushings allow for deflection, causing suspension geometry changes on hard launches, over bumps in the road, and during cornering. This deflection results in clunking in the rear end, a “rear steer” feeling, and uneven tire wear.

Powerflex polyurethane rear trailing arm bushings are firmer than OEM bushings, resulting in a reduction of deflection that causes these suspension angle changes, improving handling over bumps and with a proper alignment, extending tire wear.Engineered to perform, Powerflex performance polyurethane differential bushings offer a supreme level of control, while still providing enough comfort for the street, with advanced polyurethane that reduces NVH that often accompanies lesser bushings. Expect improved acceleration response, more direct shifting feel and overall improved drivetrain composure with Powerflex performance polyurethane bushings.

This upper front control arm (also known as a thrust arm or tension strut) is a direct replacement for the original part and is the OEM Lemforder brand.

The E38 upper control arms are sold with both the inner and outer bushings.

This item fits the following BMWs:
1995-2001 E38 BMW 740i 740il 750il

Replace your inner control arm bushings with performance Powerflex bushings to tighten up your control and improve stability. *Door Buster Special - New Product* This is a replacement part that uses the Black Series material to boost stiffness over the original part by 18% to withstand increased loading seen by this position on the car. If the control arm bushings on your vehicle are beginning to fail, it will become quickly apparent. Suspension noise will be drastically increased, there will be steering wheel shake when hitting road hazards, and the entire car will have an all around loose feel. This can also lead to premature tire failure as alignment is negatively affected. Replace your control arm bushings to give your entire suspension a tighter feel. Rattling over bumps, a loose feeling when driving, and play in the front wheels is the main indicator that your bushings may be failing. The stock rubber tends to get dry rotted, wear out, and cause play in the attachment point for the control arm. Replace yours when they wear out, or when replacing a control arm that didn't include these pieces.
