This is a common failure item which can cause a check engine light, and rough engine running on the M52/S52 engines (328, M3, 528 thru 98, Z3 2.8, & M Roadster/Coupe thru 2000). If you have received an engine fault code suggesting "cam shaft reference sensor" or similar, this is most likely the cuprit. Once replaced, you will need to clear the fault code. We recommend replacing the cam position sensor o-ring at the same time.

For BMW's with the M54 engine with a production date from 09/2002.

This sensor monitors the position of the Valvetronic eccentric shaft and feeds data back to the ECU. The common issue with this sensor is that it gets contaminated with oil and fails. It doesn't give a fault code or check engine light, however. What you would notice is sluggish driving, hesitation, poor performance, jerky shifts from an automatic, and other drivability issues. These types of issues are typically diagnosed as ignition coils (which are their own issue altogether) but this sensor may also be faulty.

The eccentric shaft sensor is located at the front of the cylinder head and is only accessible with the valve cover off. It's easy to check for oil by removing the engine trim cover (the outer cover with the BMW roundel), unplug the sensor, and look inside. If oil is present inside, or even on the valve cover itself, the sensor is likely contaminated or ready to fail. You can wipe or clean the oil from sitting inside the sensor but it will come back.

If you're planning this job make sure you have our Valve Cover Overhaul Kit, which includes a new seal for the eccentric sensor as well as the rest of the valve cover and Valvetronic gaskets. You can add the valve cover set from the options below.

This is a high quality replacement OEM VDO Mass Air Sensor.The MAF controls the amount of fuel that goes through the injectors based on the volume of air coming through the intake. If your vehicle is giving you a MAF code, replace it immediately to ensure you get the best gas mileage and performance. It is common for this part to fail slowly and cause poor fuel mileage and hampered performance. When it fails completely, the vehicle will stutter and stall as it falls into a limp mode. One way to check if your MAF is bad is to unplug the connector before starting your car. If it idles well (compared to a previous poor idle), your MAF needs replaced.
