The Dinan short shifter provides shorter shift throws with a crisper and more precise feel than a stock shifter. Instead of retrofitting a stock BMW lever, with all of its deficiencies, Dinan has engineered this billet aluminum shifting system. Special features engineered into this unit include a two piece fully isolated stick assembly, exclusive integrated and dampened pivot cup with self lubricating pivot ball, counter balanced to reduce effort and exclusive polymer "Iglide" T-500 lower pivot bushings that are impervious to contamination. Featuring an adjustable pivot, which allows this shifter to fit both standard and M Series applications. All of this combined with a simple straightforward installation provides a professional level shifter. Provides a 25% throw reduction in E36s, E39s and E46s and a 20% throw reduction in M3 and M5 applications.

BMW claims their transmission fluid to be a "lifetime" fluid, however is recommended to be changed every 60,000 miles to ensure a longer transmission life. Though not exposed to the same level of heat and contamination as engine oil, transmission oil still breaks down over time due to heat and becomes contaminated as your transmission wears. This flywheel replaces the stock original single-mass flywheel and should only be used with the corresponding 'single-mass' clutch kit. According to BMW the single mass flywheel was installed in all 325e up to 5/86 production date but we have seen some later cars with a single-mass flywheel. The age of the car almost guarantees one or more clutch replacements and possibly a change to the original flywheel as well. You may not know which flywheel is currently installed until the flywheel cover or the transmission is removed.

The ultimate in a racing flywheel and clutch! This was developed for use in our E36 and E46 World Challenge Touring Cars. The combined weight of the clutch and flywheel is only 11lbs!!!

This multi-disc (2 or 3 disc setups) offer a minimal flywheel mass (enough to include a factory ring gear for the starter) and a small 5.5" clutch assembly rated to 500hp. By saving as much weight as possible less energy is used in simply spinning the flywheel/clutch assembly and that means a lot more power and torque is available at the drive wheels. The flywheel and clutch is one of the first areas that engine builders address when making the rotating assembly lighter for race engines and this is among the most advanced and lightest racing clutch kits available for your BMW race car.

The JB Ultra-Light Performance racing clutch is available in 2-disc or 3-disc setups. We used the 5.5"/140mm size in our Touring Cars but larger sizes are available too. This is a turn-key racing clutch and flywheel kit that you don't have to engineer or spec yourself. Extreme care must be used when driving on to trailers and around the paddock. Aluminum flywheels are much lighter than the stock steel flywheel and that produces better throttle response and more available horsepower to the wheels for faster acceleration. The JB Racing aluminum flywheels are a direct replacement for the stock flywheel and work with stock clutch components for an easy upgrade with very little downside.

Modern flywheels are built with additional components and features that are designed to dampen and minimize vibrations from the engine and transmission. As a result they have become bloated in weight and that means more energy is used up just making the flywheel spin. The weight difference between an aluminum and steel flywheel is huge - sometimes more than 50% less. Without the additional mass, more energy can be diverted to where it counts most - moving the car. The flywheel and clutch is one of the first areas that engine builders address when making the rotating assembly lighter for race engines. The dampening effect is just not needed on cars that are focused on performance.

In addition to releasing more power to the wheels, the lighter flywheel allows the engine to spin more freely, which improves throttle response. Again, the difference is huge as you watch the revs build faster than before. With the engine spinning easier the power band comes up much sooner. The stock steel flywheel feels lazy in comparison. There is a driving adjustment required to get used to how much faster the engine revs but that's not really a downside.

The JB lightweight flywheel is designed to be used with a factory organic clutch - the same clutch kit that you would get from any BMW dealer. This makes replacement clutch components easy to source and inexpensive when compared to specialized racing clutches. By using the factory BMW clutch, JB has also made the whole assembly easy to live with when used on the street. The clutch behaves the same as it originally did - just with better throttle response and more power! The JB flywheel can also be rebuilt with a new clutch contact surface - you don't have to buy a new flywheel.

Aluminum flywheels are considered 'single-mass' flywheels because they do not have the same dampening designs as an original 'dual-mass' flywheel. With a single-mass design more noise and vibration may be noticeable. There are steps you can take to minimize the noise - heavier weight transmission oil and clutch discs with anti-rattle springs (sprung-hub clutch).

The JB flywheel includes ignition trigger wheel.

This flywheel replaces the stock original dual-mass flywheel and should only be used with the corresponding 'dual-mass' clutch kit. According to BMW the dual mass flywheel was installed in all 325/325e from 5/86 on but we have seen some later cars with a single-mass flywheel. The age of the car almost guarantees one or more clutch replacements and possibly a change to the original flywheel as well. You may not know which flywheel is currently installed until the flywheel cover or the transmission is removed.

Using all of that knowledge, AAF has incorporated all of this into their new innovative design. AAF's BMW Race Shifter with Adjustable Shift Shaft has a very wide array of available adjustments allowing you the ability to tune it exactly to your liking. If you want to change something about the way it works, most likely there is an adjustment for it! Adjustable Features: Throw Ratio: The knob height must remain at the same height and position for obvious ergonomic reasons. This means in order to incorporate a throw ratio adjustment WITHOUT changing the position of the knob or the pivot point, the location of the shift shaft connection must move closer or farther from the pivot point. This is done in the lower section of the shift lever. Adjustable Shift Shaft Included: Included is the AAF Adjustable Shift Shaft as they believe this allows for optimal shifting. With an adjustable shift shaft, you are able to move the shift knob forwards or backwards, as well as left or right (closer or farther from the steering wheel). You can make all these changes without affecting the spring position of 3rd and 4th gears. The shift shaft has an adjustment range from 165mm to 245mm. Knob Height: The AAF Race Shifter is capable of a total knob height change of 50mm while still having 3 different options for throw ratio. There are two knob spacers included, a 25mm and 50mm. This allows you to thread the knob down tight and lock it into place. Spring Center: Coupled with the AAF Adjustable Shift Shaft, the position of where your AAF Shifter springs to center is totally adjustable. There are two screws per center locator that can be used when setting your center position, then the upper cap will be locked down to ensure your center preference position never moves out of adjustment. Spring Pressure: One of the most unique features of the AAF Race Shifter is the centering spring mechanism. Unlike most shifters that use a typical steel spring, the AAF Race Shifter uses a polyurethane spring. This polyurethane spring absorbs shock and vibration load that a typical steel spring would magnify and resonate. This gives the AAF Race Shifter a connected feel to the transmission that is unmatched. It features two polyurethane springs. This allows the adjustment of the centering location of each spring independently which gets rid of any slack but also allows for preloading of the spring. AAF also offers multiple different spring rates of polyurethane which are preloaded in house. Mounting and Installation: AAF's Race Shifter is centered directly over the factory shifter hole. This allows it to be to be installed in many BMW applications.
