BMW Drivetrain Parts

Building your perfect BMW is more than just adding horsepower and stiff suspension. Your drivetrain needs attention in order to deliver power effectively. Most BMWs feature comfortable clutch discs, heavy flywheels, long shifter throws, and open differentials. The drivetrain transmits power to the wheels, but can also be a source of power loss when it is designed for comfort rather than performance. Everything on this page will help you improve your power delivery and driving experience by providing custom Limited Slip Differentials, Short Shift Conversions, Performance Clutch Discs, Lightweight Flywheels, and anything else your BMW needs to be the perfect driving experience.

Unlike other aftermarket mounts, the mounting plate and studs of our mounts have been Zinc-plated to prevent corrosion. Rogue Engineering Transmission Mounts are sold as a pair, and come with Grade 8 Zinc plated hardware. Rogue Engineering transmission mounts are designed with street comfort in mind while still reducing left and right movement of the transmission. By using a cylindrical shape instead of the factory hourglass like design and utilizing Neoprene rubber deflection can be significantly reduced, minimizing unwanted transmission movement while maintaining vibration dampening characteristics.

One of the most satisfying upgrades you can make to your BMW is to its factory shifter mechanism. By reducing the shifter's throw, you can give your manual transmission BMW a sportier, more precise feel. However, with so many different "short shift kits" out there, how can you be sure you're making the right decision? With the introduction of the Rogue Engineering OCTANE short shift kit, the choice is now crystal clear!

Rogue Engineering refuses to compromise with "lever substitution" as a method of short shift kit development. Rather than using actual test vehicles for their products, some companies actually dig through OEM factory parts diagrams to determine which factory levers can be substituted with others. This "lever substitution" method of introducing product is unacceptable. These shift kits have been developed and perfected through years of experience in proven short shifter technology, by Co-Founder, Ben Liaw. As longtime BMW enthusiasts know, Ben was single-handedly responsible for introducing and developing the idea of affordable, BMW factory-like, short shift kits for late model BMWs (BL/SS for those young enough to remember!).

Rogue Engineering idea of a short shift kit is not substituting levers in place of factory ones just because "they fit". Throughout the 80s until recently, BMW was notorious for using only a few specific shifter levers for their manual transmission vehicles. For other companies, making just a few "replacement levers" and offering them in place of those factory part numbers was an easy way of calling it a short shift kit. Unfortunately, for those companies, BMW started using many different part numbers making it more difficult to just "swap in a lever".

Rogue Engineering only develops it's short shift kit with test vehicles in their facility, testing numerous prototypes, offering others to test it before settling on its final design. They feel that this old school, real world testing is the best way when modifying OEM ergonomic, sensory-based controls.

Don't neglect your motor mounts! Most stock BMW motor mounts are fluid filled and the stiffness of the mount depends on this fluid. But over time the fluid leaks out and the strength of the mount is greatly reduced. A worn motor mount allows the engine to twist and shift around. The harder you're driving the more shift will occur. As the engine is moving around it can contact other parts in the engine bay - usually cooling related. The mechanical fan can hit the radiator; the A/C compressor can hit a radiator hose, the exhaust will flex and may break. Twisting of the engine can also lead to shifting problems as the transmission twists with it. There are countless issues related to worn or compressed motor mounts so don't overlook these as a regular replacement item (every 50,000 miles).

Lemförder is an engineering company that focuses on high-quality, precision manufacturing of critical suspension and steering components. Providing exceptionally high quality parts directly to BMW, as well as 50+ other big-name automotive companies, such as Mercedes and Audi, their history of reliability and variety of offered parts makes them one of the biggest names for a go-to OEM parts provider.

As Used on Project E36 M3
Aluminum flywheels are much lighter than the stock steel flywheel and that produces better throttle response and more available horsepower to the wheels for faster acceleration. The JB Racing aluminum flywheels are a direct replacement for the stock flywheel and work with stock clutch components for an easy upgrade with very little downside.

Modern flywheels are built with additional components and features that are designed to dampen and minimize vibrations from the engine and transmission. As a result they have become bloated in weight and that means more energy is used up just making the flywheel spin. The weight difference between an aluminum and steel flywheel is huge - sometimes more than 50% less. Without the additional mass, more energy can be diverted to where it counts most - moving the car. The flywheel and clutch is one of the first areas that engine builders address when making the rotating assembly lighter for race engines. The dampening effect is just not needed on cars that are focused on performance.

In addition to releasing more power to the wheels, the lighter flywheel allows the engine to spin more freely, which improves throttle response. Again, the difference is huge as you watch the revs build faster than before. With the engine spinning easier the power band comes up much sooner. The stock steel flywheel feels lazy in comparison. There is a driving adjustment required to get used to how much faster the engine revs but that's not really a downside.

The JB lightweight flywheel is designed to be used with a factory organic clutch - the same clutch kit that you would get from any BMW dealer. This makes replacement clutch components easy to source and inexpensive when compared to specialized racing clutches. By using the factory BMW clutch, JB has also made the whole assembly easy to live with when used on the street. The clutch behaves the same as it originally did - just with better throttle response and more power! The JB flywheel can also be rebuilt with a new clutch contact surface - you don't have to buy a new flywheel.

Aluminum flywheels are considered 'single-mass' flywheels because they do not have the same dampening designs as an original 'dual-mass' flywheel. With a single-mass design more noise and vibration may be noticeable. There are steps you can take to minimize the noise - heavier weight transmission oil and clutch discs with anti-rattle springs (sprung-hub clutch). In addition to the standard replacement clutches, we also sell Sachs Performance sprung hub clutches that also work with the JB flywheels.

Stock Flywheel Weight = 25.5lbs
JB Flywheel Weight = 10.0lbs

Powerflex is the number one selling suspension bushing manufacturer in Europe. Their experience with polyurethane bushing material and state-of-the art manufacturing techniques allows them to produce premium performance bushings, made to exact-fit standards. Powerflex performance polyurethane bushings are built to last longer than OEM rubber bushings, while improving performance and allowing for a more engaging driving experience. Powerflex is pleased to introduce their new N54, N55, and B58 Engine Mount Inserts, intermediate alternatives to the BMW aluminum inserts and much stiffer full replacement engine mounts available on the aftermarket. Made in Black 70A durometer material, they are designed to fit the OE mounts snuggly to restrict engine movement with a minimal increase in NVH, perfect for those with tuned road cars. Their design and flexibility also mean they can be fitted to the vehicle without removing the engine mounts themselves. Reducing engine/transmission movement by way of upgraded inserts has the following benefits: Sharper throttle response Improved gear shifting More direct power transfer More balanced on/off throttle handling Prolonged life of the OE mounts *Yellow version pictured for installation reference A small increase in NVH, usually at idle, should be expected when stiffening the connecting mount between the engine and chassis. The harder the material used, the greater the NVH transmitted.

Sway bars transmit cornering forces from the outside wheels to the inside wheels, helping to keep the vehicle flat during cornering. This, in turn, reduces body roll and improves the driver's cornering confidence. OEM rubber sway bar bushings are designed with comfort in mind, allowing the sway bar to articulate while permitting additional movement, leading to less-than-ideal bar retention and causes unnecessary body roll.

Powerflex polyurethane sway bar bushings are firmer than factory rubber bushings, reducing body roll and keeping sway bars in check. Polyurethane bushings won't slop around like OEM bushings, allowing sway bars to function at their fullest potential.

Poweflex is a leading manufacturer of aftermarket suspension bushings. Using state of the art design and manufacturing, all replacement bushings are engineered to out-perform and out-last the ones that came in the car. Each line of bushings is meticulously tested and then re-tested to ensure perfect fitment and enduring quality through the life of the vehicle. A full lifetime warranty backs every one of their products and demonstrates the level of confidence and commitment Powerflex has to their customers.

This JB flywheel replaces the stock flywheel and can be used with either the stock 228mm or stock 240mm clutch discs. Depending on the model you may have either clutch size in your car but this flywheel is compatible with both. You can install a 240mm clutch as a mild upgrade.

Differential bushings are responsible for keeping the differential in solid alignment while dampening drivetrain vibration. While OE rubber bushings are fine when they are new from the factory, aged and worn out rubber bushings create a multitude of issues that can range from annoying to dangerous. As a factory bushing ages, it begins to harden and become brittle. When this happens the bushing will actually shrink and allow for movement at the differential mounting point. At this point, the differential is free to shift under load causing a noticeable clunking noise under acceleration and deceleration and massively increasing the stress on the driveshaft and axles. Manual transmissions suffer the worst from this as it can make shifting difficult since the differential will shift when the clutch is engaged and disengaged.

By replacing these bushings with full polyurethane, the movement is eliminated since the mounting point is supported by a much stiffer material that will not harden or shrink over time. This means less stress on the driveshaft and axles and greater longevity of supporting components.

Powerflex Black Series bushings are the ultimate in track and race bushings. Featuring 95A durometer polyurethane, Black Series bushings are 25% stiffer than street bushings. Engineered to perform, Powerflex performance polyurethane control arm bushings offer a supreme level of control, while still providing enough comfort for the street, with advanced polyurethane that reduces NVH that often accompanies lesser bushings. Expect improved acceleration response, more direct shifting feel and overall improved drivetrain composure with Powerflex performance polyurethane bushings.

The Powerflex Black Series Rear Diff Front Mount Insert for the BMW F22 (2 Series), F30 (3 Series), and F32 (4 Series) is a robust and high-performance bushing designed for motorsport and aggressive driving. It's part of Powerflex’s Black Series line, which prioritizes precision and control by using a stiffer polyurethane material to enhance the vehicle's dynamics.

Features and Benefits:

  1. Material and Hardness: Made from 95A durometer polyurethane, the Black Series is much firmer than standard bushings, designed specifically for track use. This stiff material drastically reduces unwanted movement in the differential mount.

  2. Enhanced Driving Precision: By reducing flex in the front differential mount, this insert enhances throttle response, reduces wheel hop, and sharpens the overall feel of the drivetrain. This results in better power transfer and improved handling during aggressive acceleration, hard cornering, and rapid gear changes.

  3. Durability: Unlike OEM rubber mounts, which can degrade over time due to exposure to heat, oil, and general wear and tear, Powerflex’s polyurethane inserts are built to withstand harsher conditions, offering greater longevity and reliability.

  4. Simplified Installation: The insert is designed to fit into the existing OEM mount, making installation relatively straightforward without requiring complete replacement of the differential mount. This makes it an efficient and cost-effective performance upgrade.

  5. Performance Trade-off: While the Black Series offers a significant performance boost, it can also slightly increase noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) inside the cabin. This is a typical trade-off for stiffer, track-oriented mounts.

This insert is popular among BMW enthusiasts who want to upgrade their car’s handling for track days or spirited driving, making the rear-end of the car feel more planted and controlled.

This is the direct replacement wheel bearing and hub assembly to fit the front of the E39 Non-M. We sell the OE and OEM bearings so you get the highest quality part available. This is the hub with the bearing and it bolts to the carrier (new hardware is recommended).

Replace your wheel bearings when you hear groaning or rumbling sounds from the front. These sounds increase in frequency as speed increases and will get louder as you turn the wheel (and put load on the worn side). Failing wheel bearings can also attribute to annoying 'pad knockback' on the track.

Sold per bearing/hub.

According to BMW the single mass flywheel was installed in all 325i up to 12/86 production date but we have seen some later cars with a single-mass flywheel. The age of the car almost guarantees one or more clutch replacements and possibly a change to the original flywheel as well. You may not know which flywheel is currently installed until the flywheel cover or the transmission is removed.

BMW claims their transmission fluid to be a "lifetime" fluid, however is recommended to be changed every 60,000 miles to ensure a longer transmission life. Though not exposed to the same level of heat and contamination as engine oil, transmission oil still breaks down over time due to heat and becomes contaminated as your transmission wears. Old contaminated oil can lead to excessive wear and tear on sensitive transmission components which could lead to slow shifting, slips, and even complete failure. This is also true for the transmission filter. The filter removes metal particles from the transmission fluid and eventually begins to clog, preventing fluid from passing through the filter easily. This leads to excessive wear and a reduced transmission lifespan if not changed. Not sure if this kit is right for your BMW? Contact our sales staff with your VIN to confirm the exact part you need.

Powerflex is pleased to introduce their new S55 Engine Mount Inserts, intermediate alternatives to the BMW aluminum inserts and much stiffer full replacement engine mounts available on the aftermarket.

Powerflex's new transfer case bushing insert is made from polyurethane and is designed to reinforce your OE rubber transfer case bushing. This helps to stiffen the bushing and limits excessive movement of the transfer case. This Black Series bushing is rated at 95A durometer, which is significantly stiffer than your OE bushing's rubber. This is perfect for someone who tracks their BMW regularly and is looking for the best performance possible without going for a solid mount solution. As this bushing is 95A durometer, a significant amount of extra NVH should be expected.

The JB flywheel can be rebuilt too with a new clutch contact surface.
