BMW Performance Clutch Kits & Parts

These heavy-duty clutch kits use aluminum lightweight flywheels with sport clutch components to give your clutch the grip and clamping force it needs to cope with high torque upgrades. Our kits were developed through racing programs by companies affiliated with our own race team - JB Racing, Sachs Sport, OS Giken, and UUC Motorwerks. JB Racing is the leader in aluminum lightweight flywheel upgrades. They are direct replacements for the stock dual-mass flywheels with steel contact surfaces and computer balanced to 14,000 RPM. JB has partnered with Sachs to spec sport/HD clutch discs and pressure plates that work seamlessly with their aluminum flywheels. The result is a clutch/flywheel upgrade package that functions a lot like the original clutch combo with near-stock levels of effort and engangement but with a much higher torque capacity. Don't let the clutch be your weak link in a highly tuned car!

Aluminum flywheels are much lighter than the stock steel flywheel and that produces better throttle response and more available horsepower to the wheels for faster acceleration. The JB Racing aluminum flywheels are a direct replacement for the stock flywheel and work with stock clutch components for an easy upgrade with very little downside.

Modern flywheels are built with additional components and features that are designed to dampen and minimize vibrations from the engine and transmission. As a result they have become bloated in weight and that means more energy is used up just making the flywheel spin. The weight difference between an aluminum and steel flywheel is huge - sometimes more than 50% less. Without the additional mass, more energy can be diverted to where it counts most - moving the car. The flywheel and clutch is one of the first areas that engine builders address when making the rotating assembly lighter for race engines. The dampening effect is just not needed on cars that are focused on performance.

In addition to releasing more power to the wheels, the lighter flywheel allows the engine to spin more freely, which improves throttle response. Again, the difference is huge as you watch the revs build faster than before. With the engine spinning easier the power band comes up much sooner. The stock steel flywheel feels lazy in comparison. There is a driving adjustment required to get used to how much faster the engine revs but that's not really a downside.

The JB lightweight flywheel is designed to be used with a factory organic clutch - the same clutch kit that you would get from any BMW dealer. This makes replacement clutch components easy to source and inexpensive when compared to specialized racing clutches. By using the factory BMW clutch, JB has also made the whole assembly easy to live with when used on the street. The clutch behaves the same as it originally did - just with better throttle response and more power! The JB flywheel can also be rebuilt with a new clutch contact surface - you don't have to buy a new flywheel.

Aluminum flywheels are considered 'single-mass' flywheels because they do not have the same dampening designs as an original 'dual-mass' flywheel. With a single-mass design more noise and vibration may be noticeable. There are steps you can take to minimize the noise - heavier weight transmission oil and clutch discs with anti-rattle springs (sprung-hub clutch). In addition to the standard replacement clutches, we also sell Sachs Performance sprung hub clutches that also work with the JB flywheels.

Crisper shifts
Improved throttle response
Improved acceleration (We measured a .4s decrease in 0-60 times on an otherwise-stock E36 328i!)
Lower replacement cost
Hardened 4140 Chromoly Steel for excellent engagement feel and wear resistance; zinc plated for corrosion resistance
Designed for use with any E34 M5 pressure plate and clutch for OE-type clutch feel
Sprung-hub clutch disc to eliminate chatter at idle and reduce driveline shock loading
Weighs in at just 16.5lbs!
SFI tested and certified to ensure safe operation under all conditions
Includes ECS performance flywheel, clutch kit with throwout bearing, pilot bearing and all flywheel and pressure plate hardware
Why is SFI testing and certification important?

The SFI Foundation, Inc. (SFI) is a non-profit organization established to issue and administer standards for the quality assurance of specialty performance and racing equipment. SFI certification indicates a flywheel has been certified using industry-standard SFI Spec 1.1 standards by an independent testing body to ensure quality of both design and materials for flywheels utilized in competitive motorsports.

Having successfully passed SFI certification, this flywheel has an individual SFI serial number found in a laser etching, and on an affixed sticker. This certification means the ECS-engineered flywheel is safe and reliable during the rigors of competitive racing; it's also safe and reliable for years and years of street use.

Lightweight flywheel and upgraded clutch kit for improved throttle response, acceleration, and clutch feel - the perfect setup for daily-driven vehicles with up to 400 Ft/lbs of torque.

This performance clutch and flywheel kit utilizes an upgraded ECS E34 M5 clutch kit with their in-house engineered flywheel to fit all M5x and S5x motors with a 5-speed transmission. By eliminating the dual-mass flywheel and replacing it with a single-mass you are able to eliminate the slack and extra weight of the flywheel for a quicker throttle response and acceleration. Their upgraded clutch kit utilizes all the best features of the original M5 clutch with an upgraded pressure plate and clutch disc, with the new clutch you have a better, more engaged clutch pedal feel, engagement, and longevity.

Whether you're replacing a worn-out clutch or upgrading for increased power handling, this E34 M5 clutch and flywheel kit offers a reliable solution for enhanced pedal feel, power capacity, and overall driving satisfaction.

Paired with a modified geometry flywheel, the E34 M5 style clutch is ideally suited for most E36, E46, and others using the same powertrain. It checks all the boxes for essential clutch replacement features. While some aftermarket options may address slipping issues and worn-out clutches, they often sacrifice pedal feel, providing little to no resistance. A soft clutch not only kills the driving experience of your BMW but also reduces confidence when pushing the car to its limits.

On the contrary, you might be in the market for an upgraded clutch to handle your modified engine/forced induction builds. You go from an OE or aftermarket clutch option that has a lackluster and soft pedal feel to the complete opposite side of the spectrum, a very stiff clutch that grabs like an on-and-off switch making the clutch a pain almost undrivable on the street resulting in your favorite car turning into your least favorite car to drive.

The E34 M5 clutch and flywheel kit balances performance with practicality, ensuring a satisfying driving experience whether you're maintaining your BMW or preparing it for increased power demands.

Lightweight flywheels have proven themselves to be a worthwhile performance enhancement. But with the quicker throttle response and horsepower improvement comes one serious drawback: flywheel chatter. Without the dual-mass flywheel's rubber isolators, a lightweight aluminum flywheel has more rattle than stock. ECS has designed this flywheel using chrom-moly steel and it weighs almost ten pounds less than the stock DMF but not as extreme as full aluminum flywheels. The steel helps dampen vibration and noise so you get near-factory refinement and most of the benefits of a lightweight flywheel: quicker throttle response, better reliability, and more power to the wheels. Zero-balanced and SFI 1.1 certified (material and design has been independently burst tested to ensure quality and safety). This flywheel requires the E34 M5 sprung hub clutch kit. Choose below from the flywheel only or a complete kit.

Modern flywheels are built with additional components that are designed to dampen and minimize vibrations from the engine and transmission. Weight has increased and reliability has decreased. With additional weight more energy is required for it to move. A lightweight flywheel does away with the dual mass design and its additional mass so more energy can be diverted to where it counts most - moving the car. The flywheel and clutch is one of the first areas that engine builders address when making the rotating assembly lighter for race engines. The dampening effect is just not needed on cars that are focused on performance. And with a single-mass flywheel the unreliable DMF design is eliminated.

This is a performance replacement for BMW Part # 21207533868 Aluminum flywheels are much lighter than the stock steel flywheel and that produces better throttle response and more available horsepower to the wheels for faster acceleration.

The JB Flywheel includes the pilot bearing mounted in the flywheel hub, just like the factory configuration.

This flywheel replaces the stock original single-mass flywheel and should only be used with the corresponding 'single-mass' clutch kit. According to BMW the single mass flywheel was installed in all 325i up to 12/86 production date but we have seen some later cars with a single-mass flywheel. The age of the car almost guarantees one or more clutch replacements and possibly a change to the original flywheel as well. You may not know which flywheel is currently installed until the flywheel cover or the transmission is removed.

From the factory, the E46 M3 featured a dual-mass flywheel and self-adjusting clutch kit. While this provided an easy, comfortable driving experience, it lacks the durability and performance features of an upgraded clutch and flywheel kit. ECS Tuning's all-new S54 performance clutch kit is designed to address these issues. Featuring a full-face clutch disc and heavy-duty pressure plate, this kit offers increased power-holding capability, exceptional pedal feel, and superior durability.

The factory dual-mass flywheel weighs 24.2 lbs. This heavyweight component favors dampened vibrations and smooth gear changes—not performance. The 16.5 lb. E34 M5 flywheel designed by ECS omits the bulky dual-mass design for a single-mass, chromoly steel flywheel. For the performance-minded enthusiast, this translates to quicker RPM changes, easier "heel-toe" downshifts, and improved acceleration.

Engineered in-house with the enthusiast in mind, this is the perfect option for those wanting a lightweight flywheel and performance clutch, without the heavy pedal feel commonly associated with aggressive clutch kits. The ECS S54 performance clutch and lightweight flywheel are designed to accommodate all conditions: from Sunday drives through the country to the abuse of the track. No matter your driving style or ability, this is the flywheel and clutch kit for you.

PART DESIGN

ECS S54 Performance Clutch Kit:

Compatible with any performance flywheel that is designed to accept an E34 M5 architecture clutch Sprung-hub clutch disc Includes ECS performance pressure plate, performance clutch disc, throwout bearing, pilot bearing, alignment tool, and all flywheel and pressure plate hardware ECS Single-Mass Lightweight Flywheel:

Eliminates the factory dual-mass flywheel for: Improved throttle response Improved acceleration Lower replacement cost Hardened 4140 Chromoly Steel for excellent engagement feel and wear resistance Zinc-plated for added corrosion resistance Weighs in at just 16.5 lbs! SFI tested and certified to ensure safe operation under all conditions Why is SFI testing and certification important?

The SFI Foundation, Inc. (SFI) is a non-profit organization established to issue and administer standards for the quality assurance of specialty performance and racing equipment. SFI certification indicates a flywheel has been certified using industry-standard SFI Spec 1.1 standards by an independent testing body to ensure the quality of both design and materials for flywheels utilized in competitive motorsports.

Having successfully passed SFI certification, this flywheel has an individual SFI serial number found in a laser etching, and on an affixed sticker. This certification means the ECS-engineered flywheel is safe and reliable during the rigors of competitive racing; it's also safe and reliable for years and years of street use.

PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT

This Performance Clutch Kit & Lightweight Flywheel was designed, engineered, tested, and quality inspected by the ECS Research and Development team. ECS Tuning strives for the highest level of precision and quality through leading-edge product development technology, including FARO laser scanning for reverse engineering and quality inspection, SolidWorks 3D CAD modeling, rapid prototyping utilizing an in-house 3D printer, and rigorous long-term product testing.

The factory dual-mass flywheel in your MINI N14 was built with comfort in mind—absorbing drivetrain vibrations and smoothing shifts—but at the cost of performance. Weighing in at a hefty 28.3 lbs., the OEM flywheel adds excessive rotational mass, dulling throttle response, slowing acceleration, and complicating precise rev-matching. Worse yet, it's known to be unreliable in modified or tuned setups and expensive to replace when it fails.

This single-mass design from ECS Tuning weighs just 18.8 lbs. It cuts nearly 10 lbs. of rotational weight to significantly enhance throttle response, acceleration, and overall driving feel. Built for durability and spirited driving, it's the ultimate upgrade for enthusiasts who want to make the most of every gear change.

Key Features:

Precision CNC-machined from 4140 HT Chromoly Steel: Ensures outstanding toughness, consistent wear, and long-term durability.

Heat Treated and Tempered: Achieves HRC 28-32 for improved strength, stress relief, and dimensional stability—even at elevated temperatures.

Black Oxide Coated: Resists corrosion for long-lasting protection and a professional finish.

Precision Balanced: Exceeds OEM standards (G16, 175 g-mm) to ensure smooth, safe operation at all RPMs.

SFI 1.1 Certified: Tested and approved for extreme use—track or street.

Direct Fit for OE N14 Clutch Kits: Maintains compatibility with factory-style components for hassle-free installation.

Performance Benefits:

Substantial Weight Reduction

OEM Flywheel: 28.3 lbs.

ECS Lightweight Flywheel: 18.8 lbs.

Net Savings: Nearly 10 lbs.

Faster Revving and Sharper Throttle Response: Reducing rotational mass translates into a more dynamic and responsive driving experience.

Improved Clutch Engagement and Longevity: Optimized step height delivers better clamp load and extends service life.

Ideal for Modified MINIs: Built to handle increased power and spirited driving with confidence.

This replacement "sprung-hub" clutch package is designed to work with our (JB Racing) lightweight aluminum flywheel  520-010-240 for the BMW E36, E46, Z3, and Z4 models. The Sachs HD clutch disc has a sprung hub to minimize noise and vibration and organic linings to give the feel and engagement of a stock clutch.

The Sachs HD pressure plate will clamp with greater force -- allowing approximately 350 ft-lbs of torque, which makes it an obvious upgrade from the stock clutch kit.

Because Sachs is an OE supplier to most German cars, replacement parts are just a phone call away. This kit uses the stock throw-out bearing (included in the price!).

*Does not include flywheel. Requires use of single mass flywheel The FX350 System uses the Power Plus I, Hi-Levarage, Heavy-Duty Pressure Plate utilizing our Fiber-Tough friction material. This clutch has a slightly increased holding capacity then the FX300 but will have a slightly more aggressive engagement and will produce some chatter. Similar to the FX300 this clutch is designed for the serious street enthusiast who also might spend a weekend and the track and is running a normally aspirated car that has been highly tuned with cylinder head work such as cams, or with a medium-boost turbo or supercharger setup, or up to 100hp NO2. For years enthusiasts have had to compromise durability for longevity for drivability and vice versa, however with our Fiber-Tough material we have closed the gap between these two tradeoffs. * Heavy-Duty Segmented Fiber-Tough Disc Steel Backed Segmented Fiber-Tough Friction Material Heavy-Duty Sprung Hub (when applicable) Marcel Spring Wafer OEM or better Release Bearing Pilot Bearing (when applicable) Alignment Tool Instruction Card Decals *Organic/ Kevlar/ Fiber-Tough Clutch kits are expected and tend to have a higher life expectancy than OEM, however not guaranteed. BMW E36 328i, Z3 2.8 JB Racing Lightweight Aluminum Flywheel offers a significant performance upgrade by replacing the heavy stock steel flywheel with a much lighter aluminum version. This JB Racing flywheel is designed to deliver faster acceleration, improved throttle response, and enhanced overall performance for your BMW.

The modern stock flywheels are burdened with additional components meant to dampen vibrations, which unfortunately adds unnecessary weight. The JB Racing aluminum flywheel, weighing just 10.0 lbs compared to the stock 25.0 lbs, eliminates this excess mass, allowing more power to reach the wheels and reducing the energy wasted on spinning the flywheel. Engine builders prioritize lightweight flywheels when optimizing race engines for maximum efficiency, and the difference is especially noticeable in how quickly the engine revs and reaches its power band.

This JB Racing lightweight flywheel is a direct replacement for the stock flywheel and is compatible with the factory BMW organic clutch. This compatibility ensures that you can use standard replacement clutches, making maintenance simple and cost-effective. The flywheel can also be resurfaced for a fresh contact surface, so there’s no need to buy a new one when it’s time to replace the clutch.

While single-mass aluminum flywheels like this one may result in slightly more noise and vibration compared to dual-mass designs, this can be managed with heavier transmission oil and sprung hub clutches, such as the Sachs Performance clutch available through Turner Motorsport.

  • Faster acceleration: Reduces the rotational mass for quicker engine response.
  • Improved throttle response: Engine revs more freely and builds RPM faster.
  • Enhanced performance: More power delivered to the wheels for better driving dynamics.
  • Cost-effective maintenance: Compatible with factory BMW organic clutches and can be resurfaced.
  • Direct replacement: Easy upgrade with no modifications required.

Vehicle Compatibility:

  • 1996-1999 E36 BMW 328i, 328is, 328ic
  • 1997-1998 Z3 BMW Z3 2.8

The JB flywheel includes ignition trigger wheel.

This flywheel replaces the stock original single-mass flywheel and should only be used with the corresponding 'single-mass' clutch kit. According to BMW the single mass flywheel was installed in all 325e up to 5/86 production date but we have seen some later cars with a single-mass flywheel. The age of the car almost guarantees one or more clutch replacements and possibly a change to the original flywheel as well. You may not know which flywheel is currently installed until the flywheel cover or the transmission is removed.
