Stock rear lower control arms offer very little adjustment for alignment, especially in lowered vehicles, due to their use of an eccentric bolt. These aftermarket performance control arms from ECS Tuning are designed for maximum adjustability, allowing you to maximize handling and minimize tire wear.

To ensure maximum reliability, ECS Tuning's control arms are constructed from strong, lightweight 6061-T6 aluminum and feature a 303 stainless steel center turnbuckle that offers over 8 degrees of fast and precise camber adjustment. The inner bushing is a stock style serviceable OEM bushing for long life and inexpensive maintenance.

This is a small, 'dogbone' shaped piece that runs from the rear lower control arm to the hub. The lower outer ball joint is mounted in the same location and this is often replaced with the ball joint.

E36/E46/Z4, including M models, rear lower control arm (camber arm, wishbone). This is a direct replacement for the stock arm and includes the inner bushing. These arms are designed to be slightly weak and flimsy as they will absorb impact energy. It's better for this arm to absorb an impact rather than the wheel or trailing arm, or subframe, etc. Also, unknowing tow truck drivers like to use this part to hook their chains on to. This is the main rear upper control arm (or wishbone) for the E39 5-series. It helps to locate the wheel hub and keep the alignment in check. It has an inner rubber bushing and outer ball joint. When these wear out the rear suspension becomes less stable and 'planted' than before. You may also notice a clunking noise when going over bumps. Since this is just one piece in the rear suspension you may also want to check the other rear control arms.

Control arm bushings play a key role in connecting the wheels to the chassis of the vehicle. Tasked with keeping suspension geometry in check while absorbing noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) factory rubber bushings were engineered to provide a balance of comfort and control. As a factory bushing ages, it becomes brittle and begins to harden. When this happens the bushing will actually shrink and allow excess play in the suspension joint. This is typically felt by a sudden jerk forward after the car comes to a stop and is a leading cause of "sloppy" or "loose" suspension feel. By replacing the bushing with a full polyurethane unit or using a bushing insert, this play is eliminated since the suspension joint is being supported by a much stiffer material that will not harden or shrink over time. Additionally, the inherent stiffness of the urethane material translates body forces much more directly. This means steering inputs from the driver are effectively transferred to the wheels and vital road information is transmitted properly from the wheels to the driver.

This OEM Lemforder rear guide rod for the E38 7 series and E39 5 series chassis helps to control the toe alignment of the car (the horizontal in/out angle of the tire). There is a rubber bushing on the inside and a ball joint on the outside mounting point. When the bushings on the arm wear out they can contribute to a 'wandering' or 'loose' or unstable feeling in the rear. There may also be a clunking noise associated with bumps.
