This cooling overhaul will cover just about everything you could replace on the 325/330's cooling system. We start with the basic water pump and thermostat bundle. These are already vital to the health and durability of the N52 325/330. But to properly maintain these cars for the long term, the rest of the cooling system must be refreshed and preventatively replaced. Here you can add a radiator, expansion tank, cooling hoses, and the BMW antifreeze. This package fits 325/330 with N52 engine and manual transmission.

The sophisticated electronics of the ECU and water pump means catastrophic overheating should be a thing of the past. But the downside is that the electronics can shut down without any warning or symptoms. And troubleshooting is equally frustrating since the water pump electronics are not readable or serviceable. There are several clues to a faulty thermostat or water pump - the fan runs at full speed all the time (even immediately on a cold start), pending (soft) fault code for low coolant flow, or the water pump can be heard running constantly. But when the pump fails it's an immediate shut down of the engine which can be a major inconvenience and lead to additional repairs that might have been avoided with preventative maintance. We recommend a full cooling system overhaul on the E90/E92 every 80-90,000 miles and to check for soft/pending codes at every 5,000 mile service .

The water pump on the N52 engine has more cooling responsibilities than ever before. The good news is that the pump only works when, and only as much, as it needs to. That means the system can actually stop the pump when it doesn't need to be running. The bad news is that it's now an electrical part, so a failure is usually immediate and with no warning. The preventative replacement is your only insurance from a very inconvenient and costly breakdown in the future. Plus you get the very latest BMW water pump design with any improvements they've made since your original pump was installed.

Coolant Hoses

With regular driving the hoses should last a very long time. Even the plastic connectors seem to be holding up well. But as a preventative measure new hoses are recommended. We have also seen issues with re-using hoses as the spring connectors get weak over time and may not have the strength to hold the hose in place. They seem to have a tough time holding tension especially when they have been removed and reinstalled. In the interests of a thorough overhaul we recommend replacing these 325/330 water hoses during this job (see diagram):

There are other hoses too but they are not often replaced during a radiator swap (radiator vent hose and heater core hose) and they don't see much wear. We offer these as well if you want a complete set (see Additional Items at the bottom of the page).

Expansion Tank Options

The expansion tank on the 325/330 is not prone to failures (unlike previous 3-series cars) so a new one is not strictly required. There aren't many seams or stress points for it to crack and we haven't heard of too many issues. But we wanted to offer it as part of a complete overhaul in case you want to cover everything. Simiarly, the level sensor is not required unless you're getting erroneous 'low coolant' warnings from the dash/iDrive. We do strongly recommend replacing the cap because that is designed to be the weak point in the system. The cap is what regulates the pressure inside the system and it should be replaced every few years anyway.

Coolant Temp Sensors

There are two coolant temp sensors on the E90 325/330 - in the lower radiator hose and in the cylinder head. Both feed coolant temps to the ECU to regulate the water pump and cooling fan. You should replace the one in the lower radiator hose because it's one of the main sources for coolant leaks, especially when the old sensor is re-used in a new hose. The sensor in the cylinder head is not as prone to leaks and it's easily accessible so you don't have to replace it right away. But we offer it with the package in case you want to have a complete cooling system overahul.

Mechanical water pumps circulate coolant between the engine block, cylinder head, and radiators. Over time, the seals and bearings can wear out, leading to leaks from the impeller shaft and around the pump face. Some BMW water pumps have even had imellers that come loose from the shaft, resulting in little or no coolant flow. Engine running a little hot or is the temp gauge not telling you anything? The thermostat might be the likely problem. Many cooling issues start with the thermostat. This is electronically controlled by the engine computer based on the cooling demands from the engine. And cooling components are working harder than ever. Engine performance is also dependent on temperature - as temperatures rise and pass a certain threshold the engine computer will begin reducing power. Stay on top of your cooling maintenance by replacing critical components preventatively. This replacement thermostat fits many of the N55 6 cylinder engines and is an Wahler part. The thermostat is located along with the water pump on the side of the engine. To gain access for removal you may need to remove the water pump as well. If the water pump is removed you MUST replace its mounting bolts. You can add them from the options below. We also have a bundled package that includes the water pump, mounting screws, connecting hose, and clamps if you want to replace everything together (recommended).

As most 335 owners have discovered, the cooling system is vital to maintaining high levels of boost. The car's sophisticated electronics wisely shut down and limit boost when temperatures are elevated enough to do potential harm. Don't short-change your cooling system or performance on the street or the track! Where the stock radiator suffers is in capacity, which is why BMW also sells an additional radiator and other cooling upgrades with their Performance packages. This radiator for the E90/E92 335 and E82 135/1M is a larger 40mm core (2mm thicker than stock) for additional capacity and bulletproof cooling. It fits in the stock location, with the stock shroud and fan (some plastic trimming may be necessary), maximizing the available space to dedicate to fluid capacity and surface area. The factory B4x/B58 heat exchanger is not built to cater to the rigorous demands often associated with a modified build. The thin core is easily overwhelmed with IAT's rising dramatically once pushed beyond a few successive WOT pulls or even a few minutes at the track. This elevation in temperature gives way to the factory ECU fail safes pulling timing and reducing overall power in order to keep the system from overheating to the point of permanent damage. On an application where enjoyment is directly attributed to pushing the platform to its limits this constraint to cooling presents a challenge for the automotive enthusiast. The Dinan B4x/B58 heat exchanger for the F2x/F3x chassis assists in mitigating these issues with a more robust core (48mm thick Dinan core vs. 27mm thick OEM core) that wields 78% more heat transfer surface area for improved cooling capacity. The significant increase in core thickness requires unique "L" shaped end tanks to be incorporated as well, which also contributes to the overall thermal mass (ability to absorb, store, and release heat) improvement beyond the OEM setup. With up to a 15° IAT delta recorded over stock the Dinan heat exchanger is ready, and able, to assist in extending your vehicles ability to deliver maximum performance time and time again for your driving enjoyment! Features: Average of 8° reduction in IAT's with a maximum reduction of 15° over 15 successive WOT pulls Reduces the tendency to heat soak / go in to limp mode 48mm thick Dinan cooler vs. 27mm thick stock cooler 78% more cooling surface area and volume than stock 100% TIG welded and pressure tested Installation hardware included (inclusive of xDrive specific transmission oil cooler brackets) NOTE: Due to the enlarged core and unique "L" shaped endtanks minor modification to the plastic core stack shroud may be required with some factory configurations ( particularly those with the optional OEM hot climate heat exchanger).
