The external temperature sensor on a BMW is placed within the underbody plastics that extend very close to the road. As a result it's easy to damage by rolling into a low curb or parking lot tire stop. The first sign you may have a problem with your external temperature sensor is if you have a really low reading. This is caused by the sensor either being damaged, missing or having an open circuit; the wires leading to the sensor may have torn off in an impact.

Generally seen as something to keep an eye on, this is not something that should be put off. The N55 in your BMW is an interference engine, meaning that if the timing chain were to fail your engine would suffer catastrophic damage due to valvetrain components colliding with each other. Over time the timing chain will start to wear and stretch, potentially causing it to skip timing or just completely fail. Also, the timing tensioners themselves could fail! Early symptoms of timing chain wear include front end noise not associated with VANOS, or slapping noises coming from the timing cover.
