Vanos System for BMW Z3 (1996-2002)

Clear BMW chassis

Improper VANOS function will cause reduced power and poor fuel economy. The VANOS system is BMWs version of variable valve timing and can be found on the intake and or exhaust camshafts. The system uses a pair of electrically actuated solenoids that direct the flow of pressurized oil to the VANOS gears. Depending on engine requirements the VANOS system can advance or retard timing as requested by the ECU.

This oil pipe hose runs from the VAN0S adjusting unit to the oil filter housing. At some point the rubber line shrinks or cracks and oil can weep out of the swedge fittings. The fittings at the banjo bolts can also leak so replacing the seals for each banjo fitting is strongly recommended.

The factory line is prone to failure due to the OEM hard-line - this rubber line alleviates the issues imposed by the factory design and enables you to worry less about your Vanos system. We trust ECS Tuning's Exact-Fit Stainless Steel lines for several different applications, and their M52/M54/S52 Vanos line is no exception. Bavarian Autosport's M52/M54/S52 Exact-Fit Rubber Vanos Line offers several benefits over OEM. Not is it they more durable and reliable OEM, but it is also easier to install, and significantly less expensive than the factory BMW Vanos line (11361705532) or other alternatives available on the market. If you're factory Vanos line hasn't failed yet, we still recommend replacing yours with Bavarian Autorsport's Exact Fit Rubber Vanos Line M52/M54/S52 to avoid eminent future failure.

The S54 engine uses BMW's VANOS variable-valve timing mechanism. There is a filter inside the oil pressure valve that prevents contaminents from lodging in the system. Replacing or cleaning the filter is simple insurance to prevent VANOS failure. And a clean filter allows oil to pass unobstructed, meaning more efficient VANOS operation. This tiny filter slips on the end of the oil pressure valve, located on the side of the VANOS unit. Kit includes part numbers 11361401971, 11311318659, and 11361403325. Replacement is a simple procedure with new o-rings included .

The engine oil is the blood of the VAN0S system. Without a strong flow of oil, the VAN0S will ultimately fail. Oiling problems killed a lof of the VAN0S units on previous BMW engines. - don't let it happen to your S54. Proper maintenance will avoid a costly repair bill in the future. Replacement VAN0S units are over $2500! Replacing the filter or this entire pressure valve is the smart step to take. This is a new oil pressure valve with new seals and a new filter.

This is the solenoid switch that activates the VAN0S system on 1993-1995 325i, 525i, and US M3 models (single VAN0S, OBD-I). Without this switch activating (and de-activating) the VAN0S you will experience poor performance and torque output, worse fuel economy, fault codes for VAN0S operation and misfires. Thankfully, this part is relatively easy to replace and they generally last a long time. This is the Genuine BMW solenoid, not an overseas knockoff, so the quality is first-rate. This is the solenoid used on M50 and S50US engines (pre-OBD-II).

If you are looking to install the VANOS solenoid, you should also order the o-ring from the options below. Also check for leaks from the VAN0S oil line and seals. Now is a good time to access and replace it if it's leaking.

This is the steel/rubber VANOS gasket between the VANOS unit and cylinder head. It's a must-have item when replacing the VANOS unit and also a potential leak point on the S54. The original gasket cannot be re-used so make sure you have a new one on hand.

VAC's S54 Vanos Hub is designed as a direct replacement for the fragile BMW OE Vanos Hub which typically fails due to a broken drive pin. The VAC Hub has an Upgraded Drive Pin design, which is larger in diameter, as well as more material on the outside wall of the pin. In addition, the hub is made from 4340HT Billet Bar and heat treated to the same BMW OE Rockwell Hardness spec. The upgraded design is not only significantly stronger, but the larger diameter Drive Pins also minimize the huge clearance (approximately 1mm) that was in the original design by BMW and reduces the clearance to 0.2mm. This is critical in helping greatly reduce or eliminate the VANOS noise.

Also, this upgraded design eliminates the need for modifying the Pump Ring or having to buy a replacement, which further saves you money!!!
