When it comes to cooling system hose replacement, the "U" shaped hose connecting the water pump to the thermostat is usually the first to fail. A lot of this comes from its close proximity to the hot downpipes, while some of this failure comes from the sharp bends in the hose.

Why not upgrade when you're due for a replacement? The ECS Tuning silicone hose replacement fixes these issue with two key features in their design. Offering this hose in a much more heat resistant silicone instead of OE rubber and having the hose wrapped in aluminum. The aluminum coating acts as a heat shield to further protect the silicone as well as reducing the temperatures forced on the coolant running through the hose.

This packages covers the major components you would install along with a new water pump or thermostat. On the N51/N52 cars (128i, 325i 328i, 330i, 525i, 528i, 530i) the water pump and theremostat are mounted together. In fact, to get to the thermostat, BMW expects you to remove the water pump. This package covers the whole job. With the electric water pump now an integral part of the efficiency and performance of the engine, staying on top of its maintenance and replacement is the smart thing to do.

Our water pump/thermostat overhaul includes:
  • OEM electric water pump, p/n 11517586925.
  • aluminum mounting screws for water pump (set of 3), p/n 11510392553
  • OEM Behr thermostat, p/n 11537549476
  • Original BMW connecting hose from thermostat to water pump, p/n 11537521049

The water pump on the N52 engine has more cooling responsibilities than ever before. Not only must it provide cooling for the engine, but it's also pumping fluid used to cool the automatic transmission oil. The good news is that the pump only works when, and only as much, as it needs to. The engine computer dictates how much fluid needs to be pumped through the system depending on the load. That means the system can actually stop the pump when warmer temperatures are needed. No longer is the pump spinning all the time from an engine-driven belt. The bad news is that it's now an electrical part, so a failure is usually immediate and with no warning. And if the electronics are at fault, there is no way to rebuild or repair it. Fortunately, the engine computer will force a shut down or reduce power if a problem occurs, preventing catastrophic engine damage.

How to avoid a water pump failure in the future? Replacing the water pump as part of a regular interval schedule will ensure you always have a functioning pump in place. Since this technology is relatively new for BMW, therefore the lifecycle of the pump isn't yet known, we have been recommending replacement every 80-100k miles. This package of OE/OEM parts covers everything with Original BMW coolant offered to finish off the job. A proper bleeding procedure must be followed with the new electric pump.

The thermostat regulates the temperature of your coolant. At a predetermined temperature the thermostat will open to let coolant flow to the radiator and be cooled by airflow or the fan. Over time the thermostat will become stuck open or closed, leading to a variety of issues. A closed thermostat will never allow the coolant to reach the radiator and be cooled. Hot coolant will continue to circulate through the engine and absorb even more heat until boiling and the system overheats. An open thermostat is not as bad but is still not ideal - the coolant is always cool, with the temp needle always reading in the cool range. This tells the ECU to richen the fuel mixture to bring the car up to normal operating temp. So your fuel mileage decreases and the car runs rich.

Replacing the thermostat is an easy but messy job. This thermostat includes the main o-ring (but a housing gasket may be required). Consider replacing the housing and any associated temp sensors while you're in there. The cooling system will need to be bled after.

Most of the engines from the mid-1980s through the 1990s use the same thermostat design and they are interchangeable among the different temperatures. This is the 71* thermostat, at the bottom of the temperature range. It should only be used in racing situations such as when deleting the engine fan. However, keep in mind that BMW spent a lot of time engineering the cooling system to work in all kinds of conditions and changing thermostat temperature is not recommended to fix any failures in the cooling system.

Replacement stock thermostat for E46 M3, Z3M w S54 engine, Z4M.The thermostat can be replaced on the E46 M3 without removing the water pump. This can save you money if the pump still has life left on it but the thermostat needs to be done now. Symptoms of a bad thermostat include an erratic temp gauge and a fault code. When replacing the thermostat, there are three o-rings that will likely need to be replaced between the thermostat and the water pump housing, and two on the coolant tube going to the head. We also recommend new hoses, clamps, and BMW coolant. Replacement should take about one hour.

Note: even though this can be done without replacing the water pump, the job involves removing the same items to access this area. And opening the thermostat housing will spill a lot of coolant. In other words, if you don't replace the water pump at the same time, you're going to repeat this process when the pump needs replacing. We offer a complete water pump overhaul package that covers everything you need if you want to it all at once. You can the thermostat to that package and get everything without any duplicate parts. Click here for the E46 M3 water pump kit.

On S54 engines (E46 M3, MZ3, Z4 M) there is a flanged head bolt going into the cylinder head, behind the thermostat cover. This holds the left side timing chain guide rail in place and if it's loose or falls out you could have a very serious engine failure to deal with. Make sure to check this bolt while you have the thermostat cover off. You only need to make sure it's tight. But if it's come loose you may want to replace the seal ring and use a small touch of oil-resistant thread sealer.
