BMW Performance Short Shift Kits A common BMW insider's trick is to use a shift lever from another model to make your own short shift kit. BMW has picked up on this retrofitting with their own series of short shift kits using all factory BMW parts. BMW Performance shift kits are among the most complete and easiest kits on the market - shift lever, nylon ball cup, boot, and shift knob are included in most kits. This is everything you would need to replace when installing a shift lever plus a new knob to top it all off. Shifts are reduced by 25% on most models. With a fresh lever and bushings you can restore precision and feel to your shifter. BMW short shift kits are easy to shift - not excessively notchy. This makes them perfect as a shifter refresh as well as an upgrade.

Z3 1.9 Shifter for E30 318i/325e/325i 87-92 The shift lever out of the Z3 1.9 delivers a smooth and quiet shift without the notchiness and effort of aftermarket short shift kits. The Z3 shifter in the E30 is approximately 20% shorter than the original E30 shifter - less reduction than a full short shift kit but the perfect compromise between stock and aftermarket. We have installed multiple shift levers in the E30 but the Z3 1.9 feels the best to us. The shift knob height is reduced by about 1/4". This is the Genuine BMW Z3 1.9 shift lever and a direct fit to 6/86-1992 E30 318i/is, 325e/es, and 325i/is.

We very strongly recommend rebuilding the rest of the shifter linkage when installing the Z3 shift lever. Unless your shifter was recently rebuilt the rubber and plastic bushings in the linkage are going to be completely worn out. The best way to install a new shift lever is to take the entire assembly out of the car and replace all of the bushings. You'll be glad you did because a rebuilt shifter is a joy to drive! We sell a complete rebuild kit that includes (refer to the diagram for part location):

  • pin for selector rod joint, 23411466134 (#18) Note: these are the latest BMW designs that do not require the yellow washers (#12, #16).

    Also recommended are the front carrier bushings. We offer these in two varieties - stock rubber or solid Delrin. For a standard street car we would use the rubber bushings. For reduced flex and slop in the linkage we recommend the Delrin bushings (although they are harder to install). A new mounting clip is included with either one (25111221849, #3).

    E30 install note: there is a bowl-shaped vibration damper mounted with the transmission flex disc (guibo). This damper needs to be removed or you need to bend the stock selector rod so it will clear. Most E30s already have the vibration damper removed so don't be surprised if it's not there. If you do choose to remove it, this would be the perfect time to replace the flex disc. On some 325e models the flex disc is a larger diameter and the selector rod will need to be bent to clear it.

    Shifter Arm Bracket - E30 E28 E34 E24 E23 This is the bracket that mounts to the back of the shifter arm to the chassis. When rebuilding the shift linkage or installing a short shift kit is is often a good time to replace this bracket as the rubber bushing tends to deteriorate over time.

    CAE Ultra Shifter

    Everyone who tracks their BMW knows the shifter is a bit of a compromise. On the street and around town it might be described as smooth and sweet. But on the track the same engineering that makes shifting effortless becomes a liability. It's all too easy to put your BMW into the wrong gear and over-rev the engine, resulting in the infamous mis-shift (or money$hift). Short shift kits are not the solution - effort and notchiness go up but it's still easy to grab the wrong gear. The CAE shifter IS the answer, however.

    The CAE shift kit is the real deal as far as motorsport shift levers is concerned. It's function over form. The real engineering is inside the shifter housing. A spring pre-loads the shift linkage so shifts are much faster. There is no slop or play in the shift lever and the shift gate is much smaller than the factory setup so there's no wasted motion.
