Turner Motorsport Performance Exhausts

Turner Motorsport Performance Exhausts Turner Motorsport has been tuning BMWs since 1993 and exhaust upgrades for BMW are one of our favorite modifications. Performance mufflers, headers, resonator-delete, muffler-delete, race exhaust, and other exhaust upgrades have all been a part of our tuning outline since the beginning. Upgraded exhausts have multiple benefits: better sound, lighter weight, and power and torque gains. Although we sell multiple exhaust product lines (Borla, Corsa, Supersprint, Akrapovic, and others) there are times when we desire something unique and different. These exhausts are our own design with concept and engineering done by our own designers and staff and then trial-tested on our project and employee cars to ensure our design objectives are met.

E9X M3 Turner Test Pipes and Software Bundle

For a performance upgrade on your E90/E92 M3 there is nothing better than the cat-delete with specialized software. This combination produces over 40whp and 30wft-lbs with no other modifications - a massive gain on an already impressive engine!

Our Race software has been fine-tuned over the years beginning with our IMSA/CTSCC E92 M3 racecars (2011 GS class champions). We modify over 40 different maps in the ECU for such things as fuel and timing maps at part throttle and full throttle, revised torque settings, knock control, VANOS and cam timing, pedal input, top speed limiter, and rev limiters. Additional tuning has been done for the cat delete - prevent limp mode and check engine lights, fault codes for cat delete, and turning off the secondary air pump (to satisfy race series regulations). Turning off the secondary air pump also disables the cold start sequence so your idle and warm-up will be smoother and quieter. A built-in cold start rev limiter safeguards the engine internals until the oil warms up. Not only is there a lot more power at all RPM but the engine is more responsive and smoother!

Our M3 Test Pipes were designed specifically for race/track use and offer a cost-effective means of removing the very restrictive primary cats. On our Turner M3 and BMW Motorsport M3 GT4 racecars the primary cats and restrictive piping is eliminated. Our M3 cat delete pipes were the first on the market and have proven again and again to make big power on their own or especially when paired with our Stage 2 performance software. Our Test Pipes are Made in the USA with strict production tolerances and quality control. We manufacture our pipes with high quality, mandrel-bent stainless steel pipes and laser-cut flanges for an optimum fitment. New gaskets are included. The factory secondary cats remain in place. Your original O2 sensors plug into the Turner Test Pipes.

Our software is installed via the Turner flashing OBD tool. This tool plugs into the OBD socket in the dash and the performance software is installed from a laptop computer connected to the tool. It also works as a fault code scanner to read and reset diagnostic trouble codes and reset adaptations. The software program requires a Windows XP/Vista/7/8/10 laptop and the installation and setup are very easy (click here for instructions). The OBD tool, cable, and files are shipped to you with simple setup instructions. There is no need to remove your ECU and ship it. You can have your M3 flashed in under an hour from the convenience of your garage or driveway!

Turner Race Software Options:

Minimum Octane

You can choose between 91 or 93. We have developed tuning for the standard 'high octane' premium fuel found around the country (91 is the maximum available in some areas). Our power and torque gains are advertised with 91. If using 93 we can alter the knock sensor logic to extract more power with the higher grade fuel. Additional race fuel maps are also available, contact us for details.

Rev Limit

On 6-speed manual cars we can set a higher engine rev limit. 8,300 is stock; 8,400 is what was used on the GTS model in Europe; 8,600 is the safest raised rev limit that we have used in our race cars. To make things simple we offer it as either stock 8,300 or raised to 8,600. On DCT cars the higher rev limits are for M shift modes only (manual/paddle shift). The higher revs do not work in full auto D modes. Work is continuing on higher limits for D mode.

Launch Control

Our software can also enable a Launch Control feature. To use it, activate M Dynamic Mode, engage first gear, hold the throttle to the floor (it will only rev to 3,500 RPM), and dump the clutch. Keep your foot to the floor and hang on! You don't have to modulate the clutch and throttle - the engine and DSC modules will handle the launch. We experimented with different launch points and found that 3,500 RPM offers a great combination of tire hook-up and torque output. This is available on manual transmission cars only (DCT has their own built-in launch control).

M Dynamic Mode Steering

We can set the M Dynamic Mode (MDM) steering effort as the standard steering. The MDM steering is heavier and requires more effort when driving at higher speeds. Some owners feel that the standard steering is too light and over-boosted and the MDM steering is a nice change. This does not affect the steering effort, or the other features, of MDM.

240E Update

Our performance and race software is built around a specific version of stock BMW software (version 240E). It was released towards the end of M3 production and includes a number of significant changes over older versions for drivability and torque managment. 240E was such a big step forward that it's considered an upgrade all on its own. No worry if you don't have 240E - we will provide you with a free update before the Turner performance software is installed.

In 2015 BMW released a 241E update. There are minor changes to the software code but the tuning maps and data are all the same as the 240E version so there is no need to update to 241E. If the dealer offers it we recommend that you decline. If you're already on 240E there is no reason to switch to 241E (the tuning maps are the same).

E36 325i/328i/M3, Z3/MZ3 Turner Shorty Headers 50 STATE LEGAL! A Turner Motorsport developed part, our "shorty style" performance headers are CAD designed to be equal length and flow with equal pressure, made from 100% stainless steel, and finished in a 2-stage ceramic coat. The layout and tube sizes were designed to increase mid range torque and power with additional increases at the top end. Bolt these on to your stock E36 or Z3 for a instant 12 ft-lb torque and a 9 HP gain - we often see more on modified engines!

Unlike other headers on the market, the TMS Shorty headers bolt directly to the stock BMW catalytic converter! Gaskets and new exhaust hardware are also available (see below). Stainless steel construction retains heat much better than the mild steel often found in cheaper copies of our header. This results in increased exhaust velocity. Our headers are also TIG welded on the outside and use an 'under-over' construction into the merge collector so exhaust flow is not disrupted. Don't be fooled by cheap, non stainless imitations that sell for less. Trust us - you get what you pay for. If you want the best shorty header on the market, this is the one.

Factory downpipes and their catalysts are a choke point for exhaust gases. This restriction slows turbocharger spool and reduces efficiency, and has a significant impact on power. When modifying their N54, most enthusiasts quickly find OEM downpipes offer insufficient performance as power levels are increased, resulting in disappointing results from other modifications. While some find catless downpipes to be the answer, their benefits are increasingly failing to outweigh the downsides when used on the street. Exhaust volume is increased (combined with a full exhaust may be too much for sensitive ears), check engine lights are frequently illuminated, and emissions are greatly increased (a problem for the environment and in passing emissions testing).

Turner engineers designed downpipes that met a happy compromise - excellent flow with high performance 48-state legal catalytic converters. By utilizing cats, these downpipes offer much lower emissions than catless products (and in many cases, no check engine light), with little sacrifice to performance versus their catless counterparts. These high-flow units feature a 3" inlet, followed by a series of smooth radius bends and efficient catalyst, exits as a 2.5" to retain compatibility with popular cat-back exhausts (as well as factory exhaust piping).

We confirmed power and efficiency improvements are present on both a stock tune with even greater power to be found versus factory downpipes while utilizing a simple ECU tune. These gains were confirmed on our in-house Mustang AWD-500 dynamometer while running an off-the-shelf (no tuning trickery in these numbers) Cobb Stage 1 tune:

Stock downpipes wheel horsepower: 314hp @ 5700rpm
Stock downpipes wheel torque: 386ft/lb @ 4000rpm

Turner downpipe wheel horsepower: 334hp @ 6000rpm
Turner downpipe wheel torque: 390ft/lb @ 4100rpm

E9X M3 Turner Motorsport Test Pipes (Cat Delete)

One of the first things we noticed when we got our E90 M3 back in 2008 was the exhaust restriction caused by the placement of the front cats. For space considerations, the factory exhaust setup is crimped in an odd way and the cats are a high cell count. Both combine to rob horsepower. It seemed logical to us that replacing the first set of cats with a set of straight pipes would really open up the breathing and make serious horsepower. Our M3 Test Pipes were designed specifically for race/track use and offer a cost-effective means of removing the very restrictive primary cats. On our Turner M3 and BMW Motorsport M3 GT4 racecars the primary cats and restrictive piping is eliminated. Our Test Pipes are Made in the USA with strict production tolerances and quality control. We manufacture our pipes with high quality, mandrel-bent stainless steel pipes and laser-cut flanges for an optimum fitment. New gaskets are included. For installation, simply measure and cut the stock front pipes and the Turner Test Pipes slide on. The factory secondary cats remain in place. F10 M5 Turner Axle-Back Sport Mufflers

Turner Motorsport has partnered with Corsa Exhausts for the development of sport mufflers for the F10 M5. Our goals were to boost horsepower and torque and make a more pleasing sound than hushed sounds of the stock M5 exhaust system. The Turner/Corsa Sport exhaust for the M5 works with the Active Sound to make more growl and rumble so you can actually enjoy the V8 sound. Using stainless steel tubing with their performance muffler design they are able to reduce exhaust restriction compared to the stock system. As well as the tuned exhaust note and drone-eliminating sound, the mufflers use a straight-thru flow design for maximum flow and the least amount of restriction. Decreasing the back-pressure helps the turbos work more efficiently, processing exhaust gases easier and releasing more horsepower and torque. Power gains on the dyno were measured at 13hp and 18ft-lbs of torque compared to stock. Also included is the patented Corsa Reflective Sound Cancellation to eliminate drone (a common problem with most straight-through muffler designs). This system was developed on our own M5 and it makes slightly more burble and throatiness than stock while remaining composed and civilized. The new sound is especially noticeable from outside the car where there is a bit more 'boom' to go with the M5's immense punch.

Reflective Sound-Cancellation (RSC) technology - This feature is a patented non-electrical noise control system, where engine sound (pressure) waves are reflected in passages inside the muffler 180 degrees out of phase to cancel out unwanted sound waves. The result is a tuned muffler that "cleans up" the noise without eliminating the pure sound of power associated with a high-performance vehicle. Using the Corsa technology, the stainless steel mufflers are tuned to eliminate passenger cabin resonance and produce just the "right" sound. The result is quieter cruising with an awe-inspiring roar at full throttle. This system is amazingly quiet during normal cruising, due to the "no drone" RSC technology, yet still has an aggressive presence and full sound while under throttle. This makes for ideal sound for those that want an aggressive "roar" while driving hard, yet still want a more discrete lower volume for normal cruising.

This is an axle-back system, which replaces only the rear mufflers of the stock M5 exhaust. It's very easy and straightforward to install and the rest of the exhaust can remain on the car. The mufflers are designed to install at an existing cut-point in the factory exhaust which makes it easy to reinstall the original exhaust at any time (factory sleeve clamps required to reinstall). Multiple tip styles are available (the tips are shared with our Race Inspired muffler delete). This system is 100% Made in the USA and carries a lifetime warranty from the manufacturer. Turner F10 M5 Race Inspired Axle-Back Exhaust

Our Race Inspired exhaust deletes the rear mufflers in the F10 M5 to allow more of the exhaust sound to be heard. We love our M5 but it's just too quiet so we looked at ways to get more of the stock exhaust to be heard. After evaluating the stock exhaust layout it was easy to see that removing the rear mufflers would accomplish what we wanted. But cutting the mufflers off is just the beginning. We then had to develop a set of pipes and design a set of tips that fit perfectly and also looked right at home on the M5 super sedan. And these M5 muffler delete pipes are the finished product.

Our axle-back exhaust is made from a 304 stainless steel tube in the same diameter as the stock exhaust and with mandrel bends for unimpeded flow. It fits with the stock hangers and is clamped to the stock exhaust pipes once the mufflers are cut off. And the entire installation can be done in about an hour with the exhaust on the car. With factory clamps, you can easily reinstall your stock mufflers or a set of Corsa Performance mufflers at any time. Our tips are also stainless in a perfectly proportioned 102mm (4.0" diameter). They fill out the rear bumper valence perfectly - not too small like stock and not boy-racer large. Tips are available in polished silver or satin black.

The final result is that removing the stock mufflers really lets the M5 V8 sing! With the mufflers and flapper valves removed the sound on start-up is scintillating. The sound from the S63TU engine is robust and intoxicating - it just needs to be heard! From outside, the muffler-delete exhaust makes the car seem all the more impressive. From the burble at idle to the roar under full throttle there is little doubt that this is a proper M car. Inside the car during normal driving the sound is not changed much thanks to the Active Sound Design system. It's a little louder but not intrusive or irritating. Around town the car sounds much like stock but just a touch louder. The exhaust pops and burbles more with each downshift. On the highway at 70-80 cruising speeds it's as quiet as a muffled exhaust. We tried to get the exhaust to drone but only experienced it at low speeds in a high gear (i.e. - lugging the engine) which we normally wouldn't do.



Our Race Inspired M5 exhaust is perfect for enhancing and accentuating the stock sound. It lets more of the M5's soundtrack come through without extensive exhaust modifications. If you want to enjoy the M5's sound more, think of this as its volume knob turned up.

This precision designed downpipe upgrade features larger piping and a sport catalytic converter for better flow and less backpressure. Our downpipe is built with a sport cat to keep the exhaust cleaner and without obnoxious odors. We sell resonators that bolt in place, knocking the volume down by approximately 50%.

Our Turner M3/M4 Test Pipes delete the secondary cats for more sound and performance. One of the more common complaints about the M3/M4 exhaust is the lack of sound and it's clear why - two turbos, four catalytic converters, a resonator, and a large muffler with electronic flaps all work to dampen exhaust volume. We tried a number of different exhaust layouts but this was our favorite for a moderate increase in volume, "rasp and rattle" eliminated, easy install, low cost, and a power gain as a bonus!

Our M3/M4 front connecting pipes replace the stock section after the downpipes and before the resonator. They bolt to the downpipes with factory gaskets and hardware (will not fit with factory M Performance exhaust). We left the stock resonator in place because we felt removing it was too loud and it did a good job of tuning the exhaust note at certain RPM. With the Turner Test Pipes we got just enough exhaust sound in the cabin without it being obnoxious or intrusive. We especially love the subtle bark this setup gives when letting off the throttle!
