This piece vents fuel vapors from the fuel tank and sends them into the engine's intake manifold, essentially recycling emissions instead of venting them into the environment. 

The breather valve, also called a vent or purge valve, is a common failure item. Symptoms of failure include: rough idle, hard starting after fueling up, and stalling. A failure will usually trigger the check engine light, displaying codes such as P0444 (evaporative emission system purge control valve circuit open) and P0442 (evaporative emission control system leak detected).
