Featured in this kit is everything you will need to redo your cooling system from top to bottom with OEM components, with select stock components swapped out for the high performance alternative! This kit includes a high performance ECS Tuning Aluminum Radiator, for significantly better cooling than the stock radiator and full aluminum construction that won't crack from long term heat cycling, a performance Mishimoto 68*C thermostat, for lower temperature operation and increased cooling of the engine, and a Stewart High Performance Water Pump, for dramatically increased coolant flow at all RPMs.

The team at ECS Tuning supplies their excellent silicone radiator hoses, stainless hose clamps, and aluminum coolant bleed screw for increased durability and heat resistance. Meanwhile, a lower pressure expansion tank cap makes for a less costly "weak link" if the system builds too much pressure, potentially saving you from a costly radiator replacement that could leave you stranded. The kit also includes a gallon of Genuine BMW coolant along with 12 ounces of Red Line Water Wetter, which lowers operating temperatures and protects your cooling system from internal corrosion. Looking to free up horsepower and upgrade your cooling? Then this Electric Fan Conversion kit is the perfect choice! The fan and clutch that connect to the water pump add additional rotating mass to the drive line. By removing them and converting your system to an electric fan, the engine has to do less work, giving you that extra little bit of power. In this kit we include a lower temperature thermostat, coolant additive, and low temperature fan switch that engages the electric fan at a lower temperature, keeping your engine cool and lowering the drag and unneeded weight from the front end of your BMW.

The thermostat regulates the temperature of your coolant. At a predetermined temperature the thermostat will open to let coolant flow to the radiator and be cooled by airflow or the fan. Over time the thermostat will become stuck open or closed, leading to a variety of issues. A closed thermostat will never allow the coolant to reach the radiator and be cooled. Hot coolant will continue to circulate through the engine and absorb even more heat until boiling and the system overheats. An open thermostat is not as bad but is still not ideal - the coolant is always cool, with the temp needle always reading in the cool range. This tells the ECU to richen the fuel mixture to bring the car up to normal operating temp. So your fuel mileage decreases and the car runs rich.
Replacing the thermostat is an easy but messy job. This thermostat includes the main o-ring (but a housing gasket may be required). Consider replacing the housing and any associated temp sensors while you're in there. The cooling system will need to be bled after.
Most of the engines from the mid-1980s through the 1990s use the same thermostat design and they are interchangeable among the different temperatures. This is the 88* thermostat, towards the top of the range. However, keep in mind that BMW spent a lot of time engineering the cooling system to work in all kinds of conditions and changing thermostat temperature is not recommended to fix any failures in the cooling system.
