Often an oversight in maintenance, ignition components are also susceptible to wear and tear. By the early 1990s, BMW had phased out its canister-style ignition coil in favor of an individual coil-on-plug system. The venerable M50 was one of the first engines to receive this update, which boasts greater overall efficiency through increased ignition control and spark energy. Unfortunately, over two decades later, the ignition coils used on the M50, M52, S50, and S52 engines are antiquated at best.
