The Turner engineered catch cans offer a pre-setup design based ion desired flow direction, however, this does not limit you to this flow. All vehicles will lose some degree of performance due to heat soak under the right operating conditions. Engine management systems constantly monitor operating conditions and modifying parameters based on sensor inputs. BMW integrated the intake air temp sensor in the MAF housing on models such as the E39 M5, and, being sandwiched behind a hot radiator and in some applications next to an even hotter valve cover, this is less than ideal for performance applications. Absorbing excess heat from its surroundings, the MAF can’t shed it fast enough, and the ECU reads an inaccurately high intake air temperature. Compensating for this false hot air measurement, the ECU pulls timing and runs a richer fuel mixture, resulting in a significant loss of torque.
What can you do? Locate an intake air temp sensor in a location where it can properlymeasure incoming air temps and where it's less prone to heat soak. Mounting the sensor further away from the heat source and isolating it from the MAF housing, it can both resist the effects of heat soak longer and respond to temperature changes more quickly. The result is you’ll experience reduced torque loss and more consistent power output when you’re pushing your engine hard.
The Turner engineering team was initially skeptical of the claimed performance benefits of this modification. They first set out validate the functionality and performance benefit of a temp sensor relocation. Replicating stop-and-go traffic heat soak in a 2001 540i was a simple task in a controlled environment - their dynometer. First the car was heat soaked to simulate being stuck in traffic or moving at low speeds by running the car four times on the dyno with the dyno's cooling fans disabled. The fans were then turned on for three more runs to observe the recovery rate once air flow was reintroduced. The test: following this procedure once with a stock IAT, and once with their relocation kit in place.
The result? Turnerrecovered 11lb-ft torque at 2500rpm through use of their relocation kit, with even greater recovery to be found for M5 owners. Here are the heat soak-related torque losses Turner experienced:
Stock IAT location: 18rwtq at 2500rpm 10rwtq at 3000rpm 9rwtq at 3700rpm
Turner IAT Relocation: 7rwtq at 2500rpm 5rwtq at 3000rpm 5rwtq at 3700rpm
The Turner engineering team designed a complete plug and play kit (unlike all other options on the market) that makes for quick, easy, and reversible installation. Weather-sealed connectors keep out the elements, while sheathed wiring offers a clean appearance underhood. With a harness nearly 3 feet long - the Turner IAT relocation kit offers flexibility in positioning, but not too long that you're left with unsightly excess wiring. Turner recommends positioning the sensor in a location away from engine heat, but still within the intake ducting to achieve accurate intake temp readings - such as the far side of the base of the airbox. Vehicles with cold air intakes with cone-style filters can even position the sensor in the end of the filter. Simply drill a hole in your (cool) location of choice and plug in the harness. The BMW N52 engine was deisgned with a crankcase vent system that relies on a heated oil separator valve to separate vapor from the liquid oil. Under ideal circumstances, the oil vapor would pass back into the intake and get burned up during normal combustion. The liquid oil would follow a path back down into the oil pan and be reused. This system is environmentally friendly but plagued with problems. The heating elements can fail or oil and carbon particles can block the oil separator valve. With no escape, the oil will continue to pool and collect in the valve cover or make its way into the combustion chamber leading to excessive oil consumption, blue smoke from the exhaust, idle and running issues. These issues are worse in colder climates where the freezing temperatures create an oil sludge condition that is impossible to clear. The plastic hoses can become brittle and crack which leads to vacuum leaks and oil leaks. Thankfully, the CCV is replaceable on the early N52 engines (2006 and some 2007 models) and should be inspected during a major service and any time the valve cover is off. Oil can also back up into the throttle body, which is easier to check than the oil separator itself. Later N52 engines do not have a serviceable oil vent as it is integrated into the valve cover and not a separate part.

We also recommend (but not required) a new oil separator fitting on the intake manifold because it's one of the heated elements that vaporizes the oil as it enters the intake.
The oil separator can be replaced on its own but for a complete service we also recommend replacing the oil separator hoses and cleaning the valve cover. Any valve cover or intake manifold work should include a new oil separator valve.

This relay is used for the SMG system on the E46 M3 and various applications including secondary air systems on other BMW's. If you find that your SMG-equipped E46 M3 is not starting, this is one of the first places to check as it controls power to the hydraulic unit (the car will not start without hydraulics). Ignition coils are key to the efficiency and performance of your BMW. With a faulty coil the spark plug is not burning the air/fuel mixture properly and that can lead to problems anywhere in the engine and exhaust (including catalytic converters and O2 sensors). Problems with one or more coils will cause a fault code but not always a check engine light. A misfire code may be related to an ignition coil but could be from other things as well. Sometimes a visual inspection of a coil and coil boot will give an indication of a failure. You can also move coils around to different cylinder banks to see if the misfire code follows a suspect coil. We suggest always having one or two coils on hand to keep as spares.

Stock OEM hydraulic valve lifter for the M52, M54 and S50 S52 engines. These lifter buckets can last 150,000+ miles but then they no longer fit on the valve stem correctly and a ticking or knocking noise can result. If the lifter is no longer seated correctly, it can lead to the valve not opening correctly. Replacement is straight-forward but requires special tools for working with the camshafts.
