Tie rods on aging BMWs should be replaced to avoid failure and to make your alignment guy happy. There is nothing more upsetting for an alignment tech than a seized tie rod.
If driving over bumps or turning the steering wheel produces a noticeable "clunk," there's a good chance that your tie rod is to blame. After replacement, a professional alignment is strongly recommended.
