Sputtering, no starts, or rough idle could be an indication of a failing or failed fuel pump. Also, if your gas gauge is not reading correctly, or not at all, it's probably the level sensor on this pump. Unfortunately, the level sensor is part of the pump assembly and must be replaced as a whole.
