These heavy-duty clutch kits use aluminum lightweight flywheels with sport clutch components to give your clutch the grip and clamping force it needs to cope with high torque upgrades. Our kits were developed through racing programs by companies affiliated with our own race team - JB Racing, Sachs Sport, OS Giken, and UUC Motorwerks. JB Racing is the leader in aluminum lightweight flywheel upgrades. They are direct replacements for the stock dual-mass flywheels with steel contact surfaces and computer balanced to 14,000 RPM. JB has partnered with Sachs to spec sport/HD clutch discs and pressure plates that work seamlessly with their aluminum flywheels. The result is a clutch/flywheel upgrade package that functions a lot like the original clutch combo with near-stock levels of effort and engangement but with a much higher torque capacity. This racing flywheel and clutch kit is made by renowned drivetrain specialist OS Giken. Complete fly wheel & clutch setup as used on our own TMS E92 M3 race cars. This setup is ideal for both endurance racing or high horsepower applications that have very limited street use but require more clamping power than stock. It has been approved for use in the GRAND AM Continential Challenge GS race class, approved by GRAND AM rules and regulations.

Includes flywheel, clutch discs (2 disc clutch), center plate, pressure plate, aluminum cover, 360 degree housing (for clutch assembly), cover bolts, flywheel bolts, throw-out bearing, and release sleave assembly. Weighs 5% less than the stock E90/E92 M3 flywheel and clutch setup. This setup is intended for racing use only (not for daily driven street cars.) We recommend using the OS Giken clutch alignment tool during installation (sold separately).

Aluminum flywheels are much lighter than the stock steel flywheel and that produces better throttle response and more available horsepower to the wheels for faster acceleration. The clutch on the 335xi, 335i xDrive and 535xi is designed to take a lot of abuse but be user-friendly at the same time. However, this means that it can wear "qucikly" when the car is driven hard. When treated with consideration there's no reason why the stock OEM clutch can't last 75k-100k miles. This is the direct replacement clutch kit E9X 335xi, E60 535xi with the N54 engine. The kit comes complete with clutch disc, pressure plate, and throw-out bearing. The SPEC Stage 3+ clutch has been engineered to stay in step with the above average upgrades done on the 135/335/535/Z4 35i. Everyone knows that adding large amounts of boost and torque will expose weaknesses in other areas - the clutch being near the top of the list. The factory clutch works just fine on a stock 335 or with a mild upgrade like software and intake. But when you get into serious torque levels the stock clutch simply can't handle it. SPEC has focused heavily on the 335 market with 5 stages of upgraded 335 clutches. Stage 2+ is our favorite for mildly-tuned 335s, offering near stock levels of refinement and ample torque capacity (rated for 545ft-lbs). But when going beyond the usual bolt-on upgrades you need to look at your weakest links. The Stage 3+ clutch is rated for 671 ft-lbs. This clutch kit is meant to be used only with a SPEC flywheel (not the stock flywheel).

The Stage 3+ is for cars making serious levels of boost and torque. If you have upgraded turbos or a single-turbo conversion, or have checked off the list of full bolt-ons, this will be a very capable clutch for you. This clutch is designed to work only with a SPEC single-mass flywheel and avoid the pitfalls of the stock OEM flywheel. The stock dual mass flywheel uses springs and rubber to isolate vibrations from the engine and transmission. However, on high mileage or abused flywheels the rubber can break down and the springs will become weak. A worn dual mass flywheel limits the amount of torque you can put out. It will affect clutch engagement, shifts, and power delivery. In some cases a total flywheel failure can rip apart the flywheel, clutch, and even transmission housing. With the SPEC single-mass flywheel the limitations of the stock flywheel are eliminated. The SPEC flywheel is a single mass design (no internal springs or rubber to fail) and is offered in a steel or aluminum material. The steel will better dampen vibration than the aluminum so it's the better choice for street use. The aluminum will have greater vibration and noise (gearbox rattle) that may not be acceptable for everyone. The clutch in this Stage 3+ kit is a sprung hub design so SPEC has done all they can to minimize the noise and vibration. It's also self-adjusting, like the factory design, and the engagement point can be adjusted. See comments below for characteristics of each.

The Stage 3+ can be configured a few different ways depending on how you intend to use the car -

"Sport" SPEC steel flywheel	daily driving; occassional drag strip	Use this with the SPEC steel single-mass flywheel. The clutch will be stiffer than the factory design but it will grab harder and stay connected with far less chance of slippage. The engagement point is changed but most drivers adjust within the first 100 miles. The failure-prone dual-mass flywheel is eliminated and a steel single-mass is used instead. Expect more noise and vibration from the steel but better reliability and slightly better performance.
"Super Sport" SPEC aluminum flywheel	more drag strip than street	Use this with the SPEC aluminum single-mass flywheel. The clutch will be stiffer than the factory design but it will grab harder and stay connected with far less chance of slippage. The engagement point is changed but most drivers adjust within the first 100 miles. The failure-prone dual-mass flywheel is eliminated and a lightweight aluminum single-mass is used instead. Expect a lot more noise and vibration with aluminum ("gearbox rattle") but better reliability and better performance. The engine will rev a lot faster too.

SPEC Clutch is one of the premier clutch and flywheel suppliers to the tuner market. They are often found on the most highly tuned import and domestic vehicles. They are recent players in the German car community with a special focus on the newer turbo BMW models with high torque output. SPEC has been proven time after time to provide superior performance, drivability, and longevity to the most hardcore enthusiasts around the globe.

This is the stock twin mass flywheel for the N55 engine used in the E82 135i, E9X 335, F3x 335/435, and F10 535i. It's manufactured by OEM supplier LuK. Sachs recommends a new dual mass flywheel (DMF) on every other clutch replacement. There are several indicators for replacing the flywheel: damage to the clutch contact plate (from a severely worn clutch disc), grease leaking from inside (overheating), build-up of clutch material on the contact plate (excessive slipping and overheating), and failure of the internal damping system.

The dampening system uses rubber or coil springs to absorb driveline vibrations. Through age, excessive heat, and aggressive use the rubber loses its resilience and the metal springs lose their strength and become brittle. If the clutch and flywheel have become overheated the internal grease may break down as well. A DMF failure can be massive and catastrophic, not to mention dangerous as bits of metal and rubber fling themselves through the transmission bellhousing. Heat and aggressive driving will accelerate the wear so race and track cars should have their stock flywheels replaced at regular intervals or with any new clutch. Even normal street cars should plan for a new flywheel if it has high mileage.

DMF wear can only be checked with the transmission and clutch removed. If you can rotate the outer flywheel more than 20mm in either direction then it should be replaced.

A new pilot bearing (roller bearing) is included, pre-installed in the flywheel hub.
