The water pump is a known failure point on most BMWs, new and old. Older model BMWs come from the factory with a mechanical fan that features a plastic impeller. If your BMW still has a water pump with a plastic impeller, you should upgrade to one with a metal impeller to avoid future failure. New BMWs utilize an electric water pump that cost BMW millions of dollars to design - when it is working it is great, unfortunately these fail so regularly that we recommend replacing your electric water pump every 60,000 miles to avoid stranding yourself on the side of the road. The stock thermostat is designed to open at 97C. This leaves your engine running fairly hot, and running for quite awhile before your thermostat will begin operation. With the Mishimoto Racing thermostat, the activation temperature becomes 74C. That's 23C cooler, meaning you can rest easy knowing your engine will stay cooler to help avoid all the problems that can be associated with an engine running hot. This is the mounting bolt used for the water pump on all N55 engines as well as later (updated) N54 engines. These are sold per bolt and 3 are required for mounting the water pump.

This is a new and revised bolt design to match the updated water pump ( p/n 11517632426 ). BMW changed the design for the N55 and all subsequent replacement N54 pumps. The updated pump does not use a rubber isolator in the mounting flange. The previous water pump did have this rubber mount and required a longer bolt. The new bolts are also zinc-coated grade 8.8 steel instead of aluminum. That means the new bolts are re-usable instead of 1-time use like the old design.

Sold per bolt. 3 are usually required for the N54/N55 water pump.

If you think your water pump is starting to fail, replace it as soon as you can. Keep your eyes peeled for warning signs it may be time to replace your water pump. N54 and N55 engines are prone to water pump failure - replace every 60,000 miles.
