Automatic transmissions are reliable, shift smoothly, and can last without issue so long as they are properly maintained. Over time, the transmission fluid becomes thick and the filter becomes contaminated with small metal particles. This can cause excess wear, high transmission operating temperatures, and eventual failure. To prevent this we recommend changing your filter, fluid, and seals to ensure your transmission continues to operate flawlessly. We recommend filter and fluid changes every 50,000 miles.

BMW has been labeling fluids as "lifetime" for quite some time now, and as enthusiasts and owners have learned over the years, there simply is no fluid that last a lifetime. Kit includes: 5 quarts of Pentosin DCTF-1 fluid DCT transmission cartridge and suction filters Drain and fill plugs Please note: We include 5 quarts of DCT fluid because without a GT1 diagnostic tool and much more involved labor, you will not be able to replace over 5 quarts of fluid. Many elect to do this service and simply flush the fluid 5,000 miles later to ensure all fluid has been flushed, but this is not mandatory.

This will lead to poor shifting, slipping, and ultimately, transmission failure. BMW claims their transmission fluid to be a "lifetime" fluid, however is recommended to be changed every 60,000 miles to ensure a longer transmission life. Though not exposed to the same level of heat and contamination as engine oil, transmission oil still breaks down over time due to heat and becomes contaminated as your transmission wears. Old contaminated oil can lead to excessive wear and tear on sensitive transmission components which could lead to slow shifting, slips, and even complete failure. This is also true for the transmission filter integrated into the transmission fluid pan.
