The cooling system is arguably the weakest point in numerous BMWs. If you drive an aging BMW or plan on taking your car to the track like we do, we recommend beefing up your cooling system before going to the track. Generally, the main components in your cooling system that are prone to failure include the following: expansion tank, factory hoses, water pump, thermostat, fan (especially if your vehicle comes factory with a clutch fan), and radiator. Factory BMW expansion tanks are plastic and prone to either breaking off at connection points or combusting. As factory rubber hoses age they either crack or break over time - we offer silicone cooling hose upgrades for most applications to avoid future failures. If you have an older vehicle, your water pump likely comes from the factory with a plastic impeller - we offer upgraded water pumps with metal impellers that are far more reliable. Newer model BMWs utilize electric water pumps - BMW spent millions of dollars engineering these water pumps, but they fail so often that we recommend replacing at 60,000 mile service intervals to avoid being stranded on the side of the road. In terms of thermostats, we offer various upgraded thermostats for racing applications. If your BMW utilizes a clutch fan from the factory, we have several options available in terms of universal electric fans - we recommend replacing these to avoid sending brittle plastic fan blades through your hood. For radiators, we recommend swapping out your radiator for one that does not use plastic connection points like your factory radiator.

The N20/n26 engined cars already suffer from reduced cooling area because of the factory intercooler, tight space under the hood, and of course heat from the turbo(s). BMW addressed these challenges a number of ways, including a dynamic, 'smart' electric water pump with increased output compared to normally aspirated models. The cooling demands mean additional stress on the major cooling components, especially the water pump and thermostat.

Kit includes:

  • Mahle-Behr thermostat
  • Pierburg water pump
  • Genuine BMW coolant
  • Mounting hardware required for both the thermostat and water pump

If your vehicle is experiencing cooling issues, chances are the thermostat is the cause. Common symptoms include prolonged warm-up at highway speeds from the thermostat being stuck open, or consistent overheating issues from the thermostat being stuck in the closed position. Either condition can result in poor performance, and potential damage to vital components in your vehicle.

Kit includes

  • Wahler Thermostat
  • 1 liter of Coolant

BMWs are well-known for their problematic cooling systems, which often lead to irreversible engine damage and hefty repair bills. The coolant expansion tank—a crucial component that holds hot engine coolant under high pressure—is a common cause of cooling system issues. Unfortunately, BMW chose to manufacture the factory F3X expansion tank out of plastic. After years of exposure to high coolant temperatures, ambient engine bay heat, and chemical-rich antifreeze, the plastic degrades, eventually weakening enough to fail catastrophically.

With this issue in mind, our team of BMW enthusiasts engineered the ultimate cooling system upgrade for the N55-equipped F3X: a heavy-duty expansion tank built to last! Crafted from durable 5052 TIG-welded aluminum, this tank resists high temperatures and pressures without degrading over time. Unlike the fragile OEM plastic tank, Turner’s design eliminates the risk of cracking, leaking, or failure. Upgrade to our Heavy Duty Aluminum Expansion Tank Kit and say goodbye to expansion tank issues for good!

To guarantee exact fitment, the upgraded tank was designed using advanced 3D CAD modeling. All bungs, nipples, and fittings are precision-machined to ensure a secure seal with factory hose ends. Unlike other aftermarket options, this tank maintains the factory coolant capacity and includes our laser-cut logo plate at the top, providing an accurate fill level. Internal baffles are incorporated to prevent fluid cavitation, eliminating air pockets in the cooling system and avoiding false coolant level warnings during spirited driving.

Engineered for high-performance builds and daily drivers alike, this expansion tank boasts a premium wrinkle black powder coat finish for a clean "OEM+" aesthetic. This tough coating not only enhances appearance but also protects against corrosion for long-term durability. The kit includes a silicone overflow hose, a high-quality level sensor, and an OE expansion tank cap, offering a complete cooling system upgrade. Avoid the risks of the factory expansion tank—upgrade your BMW today and drive with confidence!

The factory B4x/B58 heat exchanger is not built to cater to the rigorous demands often associated with a modified build. The thin core is easily overwhelmed with IAT's rising dramatically once pushed beyond a few successive WOT pulls or even a few minutes at the track. This elevation in temperature gives way to the factory ECU fail safes pulling timing and reducing overall power in order to keep the system from overheating to the point of permanent damage. On an application where enjoyment is directly attributed to pushing the platform to its limits this constraint to cooling presents a challenge for the automotive enthusiast. The Dinan B4x/B58 heat exchanger for the F2x/F3x chassis assists in mitigating these issues with a more robust core (48mm thick Dinan core vs. 27mm thick OEM core) that wields 78% more heat transfer surface area for improved cooling capacity. The significant increase in core thickness requires unique "L" shaped end tanks to be incorporated as well, which also contributes to the overall thermal mass (ability to absorb, store, and release heat) improvement beyond the OEM setup. With up to a 15° IAT delta recorded over stock the Dinan heat exchanger is ready, and able, to assist in extending your vehicles ability to deliver maximum performance time and time again for your driving enjoyment! Features: Average of 8° reduction in IAT's with a maximum reduction of 15° over 15 successive WOT pulls Reduces the tendency to heat soak / go in to limp mode 48mm thick Dinan cooler vs. 27mm thick stock cooler 78% more cooling surface area and volume than stock 100% TIG welded and pressure tested Installation hardware included (inclusive of xDrive specific transmission oil cooler brackets) NOTE: Due to the enlarged core and unique "L" shaped endtanks minor modification to the plastic core stack shroud may be required with some factory configurations ( particularly those with the optional OEM hot climate heat exchanger). Consult the installation PDF for full documentation on what exactly that entails. (https://documents.dinancars.com/d780-0002.pdf)

We have found that the expansion tanks should be replaced based on age as well as condition. Expansion tanks seem to have a lifespan of fewer than six to eight years before they show signs of fatigue and wear. Pre-emptively replacing the expansion tank as part of an overall maintenance plan can prevent you from getting stranded from a sudden failure later on.
