Find Parts That Fit Your Vehicle

The cooling system is arguably the weakest point in numerous BMWs. If you drive an aging BMW or plan on taking your car to the track like we do, we recommend beefing up your cooling system before going to the track. Generally, the main components in your cooling system that are prone to failure include the following: expansion tank, factory hoses, water pump, thermostat, fan (especially if your vehicle comes factory with a clutch fan), and radiator. Factory BMW expansion tanks are plastic and prone to either breaking off at connection points or combusting. As factory rubber hoses age they either crack or break over time - we offer silicone cooling hose upgrades for most applications to avoid future failures. If you have an older vehicle, your water pump likely comes from the factory with a plastic impeller - we offer upgraded water pumps with metal impellers that are far more reliable. Newer model BMWs utilize electric water pumps - BMW spent millions of dollars engineering these water pumps, but they fail so often that we recommend replacing at 60,000 mile service intervals to avoid being stranded on the side of the road. In terms of thermostats, we offer various upgraded thermostats for racing applications. If your BMW utilizes a clutch fan from the factory, we have several options available in terms of universal electric fans - we recommend replacing these to avoid sending brittle plastic fan blades through your hood. For radiators, we recommend swapping out your radiator for one that does not use plastic connection points like your factory radiator.

This is a compete cooling system overhaul kit, which includes all the common cooling system failure parts bundled into a complete package. This cooling system package is for the 1997-1998 540i with the M62 4.4-liter engine (non-VAN0S). This package applies to cars equipped with either the manual or automatic transmission (select the appropriate parts in the menu below).

A failure in the cooling system can lead to overheating and catastrophic engine failure. Don't gamble your engine! By replacing these core items preventatively, such as the thermostat housing, radiator, and waterpump, you are defusing what could be a ticking cooling system time bomb. And if you've had a failure of one of these parts, now is the time to refresh your entire cooling system.

There are three versions of the water pump for the early 1997-1998 540i: OEM plastic impeller, updated metal impeller, and the more recently updated composite impeller. We recommend either the metal or composite impeller. These are what we use the most in our shop and what our technicians are comfortable with. On more recent models, BMW has used the composite impeller as original. There doesn't seem to be evidence of the plastic failing on this design (it did on the E36 3-series) but we feel most comfortable with the other options. Both the metal and composite manufacturers are OEM for BMW.

This is a compete cooling system overhaul kit, which includes all the common cooling system failure parts bundled into a complete package. This cooling system package is for the 1999-2000 528i with the M52TU engine and the 2001-2003 525i and 530i with the M54 engine. This package applies to cars equipped with either the manual or automatic transmission.

Much of the later E39 cooling system is strong and reliable and doesn't suffer the same types of problems associated with earlier E39 and E36 systems. But there is still the potential for serious cooling system and engine-related failures. Several of the primary cooling components are prone to failure within 80k miles (or less in many cases). Our kit includes an OEM Behr radiator, an Original BMW water pump (with updated composite impeller), thermostat with housing, radiator cap, and new radiator hoses.

Optional items (which can be added below):
- Original BMW antifreeze
- Upgrade the water pump to a Stewart EMP High Performance pump
- Add a new coolant expansion tank (known for cracking)
- Add a new coolant level sensor (known for failing / throwing "check coolant" messages)
- Add a new coolant temp sensor (located in lower radiator hose and the seal ring may cause leaks if re-used)

This cooling system overhaul kit fits the following BMWs:
