Is you BMW not riding and driving like the crisp cornering machine it used to? It's probably time for a new set of shocks. The factory BMW shocks typically only last about 50 or 60 thousand miles before they wear out and start failing. Failed, leaking or lifeless old shocks make your BMW feel unsettled, cause uneven tire wear and can even be dangerous. Your BMW's shocks are a critical part of the suspension system, and should keep your tires planted on the road. If your shocks haven't been replaced in 60, 80 or 100 miles, you are definitely due for a new set.

While replacing front shocks it is a good idea to inspect / replace these mounts as the rubber can wear and crack over time. This mounts at the top of the front shock and is held into the chassis with 3 bolts.

One often overlooked piece is the upper strut bearing and mount. This is the top mount for your struts and provides a solid platform for your front suspension. If worn, the bearings within this mount make noise, there is slop from worn rubber, and it can shorten the life of your shocks. To get the most out of your new suspension setup, it's recommended that you replace all parts that are known to fail. Not only will this make your new setup more effective, it will provide a better ride, proper tire position, and make all of your parts last longer. Priced each, but should always be replaced in pairs.

The strut mounts (or guide support) locate the front strut to the chassis of the car. They are a very durable rubber meant to absorb vibration and impacts from bumps, potholes, etc. There is also a bearing inside that allows the strut shaft to turn independent of the rest of the suspension. Therefore, the front strut mount is a very critical piece on the E36 suspension. These mounts generally last 100,000 miles or more but it would be a good idea to change them with every strut replacement. Alternate part number - 31336779613 .
