Flywheels

The factory BMW flywheel is a 2 piece design that mitigates vibration and creates a comfortable driving experience. A single piece aftermarket flywheel will allow the engine to rev quicker and gives shifting a much more direct and mechanical feel. This also makes clutch modulation on spirited takeoffs much easier and more predictable and is a must if you plan on tracking or competing in your BMW.

The Turner Lightweight Flywheel solves these issues with a single-mass design that strikes the perfect balance between comfort, performance, and reliability making it ideal for both daily driving and spirited track use.

By replacing your clutch you will restore performance and driving pleasure.

This clutch is an excellent upgrade for non 335is/550i/650i models. It features a more heavy-duty clutch disc and more holding power with stock-like pedal effort.

As Used on Project E36 M3
Aluminum flywheels are much lighter than the stock steel flywheel and that produces better throttle response and more available horsepower to the wheels for faster acceleration. The JB Racing aluminum flywheels are a direct replacement for the stock flywheel and work with stock clutch components for an easy upgrade with very little downside.

Modern flywheels are built with additional components and features that are designed to dampen and minimize vibrations from the engine and transmission. As a result they have become bloated in weight and that means more energy is used up just making the flywheel spin. The weight difference between an aluminum and steel flywheel is huge - sometimes more than 50% less. Without the additional mass, more energy can be diverted to where it counts most - moving the car. The flywheel and clutch is one of the first areas that engine builders address when making the rotating assembly lighter for race engines. The dampening effect is just not needed on cars that are focused on performance.

In addition to releasing more power to the wheels, the lighter flywheel allows the engine to spin more freely, which improves throttle response. Again, the difference is huge as you watch the revs build faster than before. With the engine spinning easier the power band comes up much sooner. The stock steel flywheel feels lazy in comparison. There is a driving adjustment required to get used to how much faster the engine revs but that's not really a downside.

The JB lightweight flywheel is designed to be used with a factory organic clutch - the same clutch kit that you would get from any BMW dealer. This makes replacement clutch components easy to source and inexpensive when compared to specialized racing clutches. By using the factory BMW clutch, JB has also made the whole assembly easy to live with when used on the street. The clutch behaves the same as it originally did - just with better throttle response and more power! The JB flywheel can also be rebuilt with a new clutch contact surface - you don't have to buy a new flywheel.

Aluminum flywheels are considered 'single-mass' flywheels because they do not have the same dampening designs as an original 'dual-mass' flywheel. With a single-mass design more noise and vibration may be noticeable. There are steps you can take to minimize the noise - heavier weight transmission oil and clutch discs with anti-rattle springs (sprung-hub clutch). In addition to the standard replacement clutches, we also sell Sachs Performance sprung hub clutches that also work with the JB flywheels.

This flywheel replaces the stock original single-mass flywheel and should only be used with the corresponding 'single-mass' clutch kit. According to BMW the single mass flywheel was installed in all 325i up to 12/86 production date but we have seen some later cars with a single-mass flywheel. The age of the car almost guarantees one or more clutch replacements and possibly a change to the original flywheel as well. You may not know which flywheel is currently installed until the flywheel cover or the transmission is removed.

The JB flywheel can be rebuilt too with a new clutch contact surface.

BMW E36 328i, Z3 2.8 JB Racing Lightweight Aluminum Flywheel offers a significant performance upgrade by replacing the heavy stock steel flywheel with a much lighter aluminum version. This JB Racing flywheel is designed to deliver faster acceleration, improved throttle response, and enhanced overall performance for your BMW.

The modern stock flywheels are burdened with additional components meant to dampen vibrations, which unfortunately adds unnecessary weight. The JB Racing aluminum flywheel, weighing just 10.0 lbs compared to the stock 25.0 lbs, eliminates this excess mass, allowing more power to reach the wheels and reducing the energy wasted on spinning the flywheel. Engine builders prioritize lightweight flywheels when optimizing race engines for maximum efficiency, and the difference is especially noticeable in how quickly the engine revs and reaches its power band.

This JB Racing lightweight flywheel is a direct replacement for the stock flywheel and is compatible with the factory BMW organic clutch. This compatibility ensures that you can use standard replacement clutches, making maintenance simple and cost-effective. The flywheel can also be resurfaced for a fresh contact surface, so there’s no need to buy a new one when it’s time to replace the clutch.

While single-mass aluminum flywheels like this one may result in slightly more noise and vibration compared to dual-mass designs, this can be managed with heavier transmission oil and sprung hub clutches, such as the Sachs Performance clutch available through Turner Motorsport.

  • Faster acceleration: Reduces the rotational mass for quicker engine response.
  • Improved throttle response: Engine revs more freely and builds RPM faster.
  • Enhanced performance: More power delivered to the wheels for better driving dynamics.
  • Cost-effective maintenance: Compatible with factory BMW organic clutches and can be resurfaced.
  • Direct replacement: Easy upgrade with no modifications required.

Vehicle Compatibility:

  • 1996-1999 E36 BMW 328i, 328is, 328ic
  • 1997-1998 Z3 BMW Z3 2.8

The JB flywheel includes ignition trigger wheel.

This flywheel replaces the stock original single-mass flywheel and should only be used with the corresponding 'single-mass' clutch kit. According to BMW the single mass flywheel was installed in all 325e up to 5/86 production date but we have seen some later cars with a single-mass flywheel. The age of the car almost guarantees one or more clutch replacements and possibly a change to the original flywheel as well. You may not know which flywheel is currently installed until the flywheel cover or the transmission is removed.

A lightweight aluminum flywheel is a great way to increase throttle response and free up horsepower by reducing drivetrain loss. Factory flywheels are built to minimize engine and transmission vibrations, making them heavier and requiring more energy to make them spin. An aluminum flywheel can save lots of weight over the stock steel unit - sometimes over 50%. While the dampening effect of the stock flywheel is reduced, most enthusiasts would agree that the increase in performance is well worth it. In addition, the lighter flywheel allows the engine to spin more freely, improving throttle response. This JB Racing lightweight aluminum flywheel kit and is designed to be used with the included factory clutch, making replacement and service easy and inexpensive, especially compared to specialized racing clutches. It also preserves the driveability of your car on the street, and enthusiasts tolerant of a mild to moderate NVH increase will be especially taken with this setup. In addition, the JB Racing flywheel can be easily rebuilt with a new clutch contact surface, allowing you to enjoy faster revs and superior response for many years to come. This is the stock twin mass flywheel for the N55 engine used in the E82 135i, E9X 335, F3x 335/435, and F10 535i. It's manufactured by OEM supplier LuK. Sachs recommends a new dual mass flywheel (DMF) on every other clutch replacement. There are several indicators for replacing the flywheel: damage to the clutch contact plate (from a severely worn clutch disc), grease leaking from inside (overheating), build-up of clutch material on the contact plate (excessive slipping and overheating), and failure of the internal damping system.

The dampening system uses rubber or coil springs to absorb driveline vibrations. Through age, excessive heat, and aggressive use the rubber loses its resilience and the metal springs lose their strength and become brittle. If the clutch and flywheel have become overheated the internal grease may break down as well. A DMF failure can be massive and catastrophic, not to mention dangerous as bits of metal and rubber fling themselves through the transmission bellhousing. Heat and aggressive driving will accelerate the wear so race and track cars should have their stock flywheels replaced at regular intervals or with any new clutch. Even normal street cars should plan for a new flywheel if it has high mileage.

DMF wear can only be checked with the transmission and clutch removed. If you can rotate the outer flywheel more than 20mm in either direction then it should be replaced.

A new pilot bearing (roller bearing) is included, pre-installed in the flywheel hub.

This Genuine BMW Motorsport part (used on the Sport Evo M3s) is a precision machined and balanced lightweight steel flywheel. The stock flywheel weights 19.5 lbs, the Motorsport flywheel is under 12 lbs! This lightweight flywheel will allow the motor to "spool up" faster, improving acceleration. This is a perfect flywheel upgrade for someone who does not want a full aluminum lightweight flywheel and also wants factory Motorsport parts on the E30 M3. After the Turner performance chip this is the next biggest "bang for the buck" for your M3. Flywheel mounting bolts available separately.

This item fits the following BMWs:
1987-1991 E30 BMW M3

How it works: Dual (or twin) mass flywheels are made of two separate flywheel disks separated by a friction ring, and coupled through torsion dampers: springs and planetary gear sets. Transmitting drive from the engine to the transmission through vibration dampers isolates crankshaft torsion spikes, reducing transmission gear rattle, gear selection effort, and synchronizer wear. Failed dual mass isolation springs and gears cause noise and vibration. Includes new pilot bearing as well as 8 OEM flywheel bolts and Schwaben's hard-to-find T60 torx socket for removal and installation of flywheel bolts.
