This is a common failure item which can cause a check engine light, and rough engine running on the M52/S52 engines (328, M3, 528 thru 98, Z3 2.8, & M Roadster/Coupe thru 2000). If you have received an engine fault code suggesting "cam shaft reference sensor" or similar, this is most likely the cuprit. Once replaced, you will need to clear the fault code. We recommend replacing the cam position sensor o-ring at the same time.

This sensor monitors the position of the Valvetronic eccentric shaft and feeds data back to the ECU. The common issue with this sensor is that it gets contaminated with oil and fails. It doesn't give a fault code or check engine light, however. What you would notice is sluggish driving, hesitation, poor performance, jerky shifts from an automatic, and other drivability issues. These types of issues are typically diagnosed as ignition coils (which are their own issue altogether) but this sensor may also be faulty.

The eccentric shaft sensor is located at the front of the cylinder head and is only accessible with the valve cover off. It's easy to check for oil by removing the engine trim cover (the outer cover with the BMW roundel), unplug the sensor, and look inside. If oil is present inside, or even on the valve cover itself, the sensor is likely contaminated or ready to fail. You can wipe or clean the oil from sitting inside the sensor but it will come back.

BMW N63 4.4L Vent Pipe

The BMW N63 4.4L Vent Pipe addresses common issues with oil separators freezing in cold weather conditions. This problem often occurs if the vehicle is driven before it is fully warmed up, leading to a howling noise and multiple oil leaks. The crankcase breather valve in the vent pipe purges oil vapor from the engine block into the valve cover. Don't neglect your motor mounts! Most stock BMW motor mounts are fluid filled and the stiffness of the mount depends on this fluid. But over time the fluid leaks out and the strength of the mount is greatly reduced. A worn motor mount allows the engine to twist and shift around. The harder you're driving the more shift will occur. As the engine is moving around it can contact other parts in the engine bay - usually cooling related. The mechanical fan can hit the radiator; the A/C compressor can hit a radiator hose, the exhaust will flex and may break. Twisting of the engine can also lead to shifting problems as the transmission twists with it. There are countless issues related to worn or compressed motor mounts so don't overlook these as a regular replacement item (every 50,000 miles).

This is a high quality replacement OEM VDO Mass Air Sensor.The MAF controls the amount of fuel that goes through the injectors based on the volume of air coming through the intake. If your vehicle is giving you a MAF code, replace it immediately to ensure you get the best gas mileage and performance. It is common for this part to fail slowly and cause poor fuel mileage and hampered performance. When it fails completely, the vehicle will stutter and stall as it falls into a limp mode. One way to check if your MAF is bad is to unplug the connector before starting your car. If it idles well (compared to a previous poor idle), your MAF needs replaced. If you let this maintenance part go, your fuel economy will suffer as too much fuel is going into the engine and not being burned. A great way to give your vehicle an efficiency boost.
