The gasket fails and allows oil to seep down onto the side of the engine and other parts causing a mess and reducing the amount of oil in your engine. When these gaskets leak you'll start to smell oil burning when the engine is hot. Also everything downward from the top of the engine becomes coated in a greasy film.
The valve cover gasket keeps all of the motor oil inside your engine. Your valve train and lifters get soaked with oil to keep everything lubricated. If the valve cover fails, engine oil seeps and leaks out, running down and burning on the block or cylinder head. Replace it and keep your engine compartment clean and tidy with all the engine oil in the motor.
