A common cause of check engine light and limp mode after running the car hard. Restarting the car commonly clears the code and/or limp mode.

Two different problem codes, 2A87 "Outlet-Vanos variable cam control test" and "2A82 Inlet-Vanos variable cam control test", are thrown indicating the possibility of various VANOS-related problems. If a solenoid valve needs to be replaced, this part is appropriate for both situations, outlet and inlet.

A cracked valve cover can cause a myriad of problems none of which are inexpensive. A simple oil leak may prove nothing more than a driveway nuisance; however, the damage that can occur as a result of low oil do more to drain the wallet. A small vacuum leak may cause only a minor hesitation but the reduced efficiency means less mpg's and more trips to the pump. This factory replacement valve cover will get you back on the road and ensure a solid and tight seal along the top end of the engine.

This sensor monitors the position of the Valvetronic eccentric shaft and feeds data back to the ECU. The common issue with this sensor is that it gets contaminated with oil and fails. It doesn't give a fault code or check engine light, however. What you would notice is sluggish driving, hesitation, poor performance, jerky shifts from an automatic, and other drivability issues. These types of issues are typically diagnosed as ignition coils (which are their own issue altogether) but this sensor may also be faulty.

The eccentric shaft sensor is located at the front of the cylinder head and is only accessible with the valve cover off. It's easy to check for oil by removing the engine trim cover (the outer cover with the BMW roundel), unplug the sensor, and look inside. If oil is present inside, or even on the valve cover itself, the sensor is likely contaminated or ready to fail. You can wipe or clean the oil from sitting inside the sensor but it will come back.
