Older BMWs utilize a mechanical clutch fan from the factory. If your vehicle still has a clutch fan, you can validate its functionality with the 'newspaper test,' but we recommend our customers do a clutch fan delete, adding in an electronic fan to avoid sending a plastic fan blade through your hood. Alternatively, we do offer factory replacement parts for your clutch fan if you would like to keep your vehicle as BMW intended it.
This is the viscous fan clutch for the for the engine fan on M60/M62 V8 engines. When the engine is cool or even at normal operating temperature, the fan clutch partially disengages the engine's mechanically-driven radiator cooling fan. This saves power, since the engine does not have to fully drive the fan. If engine temperature rises above the clutch's engagement temperature setting, the fan becomes fully engaged, thus drawing a higher volume of ambient air through the vehicle's radiator, which in turn serves to maintain or lower the engine coolant temperature to an acceptable level.Typically, when the fan clutch fails the car with tend to overheat at idle or in slow moving traffic.
