Top end / cylinder head gasket set for the M52 engine in the E36 328i, E39 528i, and Z3 2.8. This gasket set covers all of the gaskets, seals, and o-rings you find around the cylinder head.

This set of gaskets is a both a time and money saver. It includes all of the commonly replaced gaskets, seals, and o-rings when performing this overhaul. Having these on hand instead of chasing them down at the last minute will save you time, money, and frustration. With this area of the engine apart you're going to want or need to replace these items anyway to ensure it's free of fluid and vacuum leaks. This is especially important because some states have very strict emissions regulations and vacuum and oil leaks can lead to failed inspections tests. On newer cars this can also create issues in the on-board diagnostics system. Even if you're not pulling the head this set includes so many valuable parts you'll want to keep this on hand to use for spares.

Sensor for: Exhaust. One weak point on BMW engines for years has been the cam position reference sensor. On the S54 engine in the E46 M3, M Roadster, and Z4M, there is one sensor for each cam. The sensor tells the computer the position of the cam on cylinder #1. The computer relies on the sensor's information to set injection timing and VAN0S control. When a sensor goes bad, the computer loses track of what position the cam is in. While the engine will continue to run (taking its measurements from the crank position sensor), the entire system is thrown off. The engine may stumble or run rough, but not misfire, and there will be a loss of performance. Each cam sensor also doubles as a sensor for the VAN0S. So when the sensor goes bad, the VAN0S will revert to a safe mode and will not advance.

While the engine will still run with a faulty cam position sensor, it's not running in its finest tune. The DME will have fault codes related to the cam sensor or for the VAN0S. This is the Original BMW sensor with a new o-ring.

This is the solenoid switch that activates the VAN0S system on 1993-1995 325i, 525i, and US M3 models (single VAN0S, OBD-I). Without this switch activating (and de-activating) the VAN0S you will experience poor performance and torque output, worse fuel economy, fault codes for VAN0S operation and misfires. Thankfully, this part is relatively easy to replace and they generally last a long time. This is the Genuine BMW solenoid, not an overseas knockoff, so the quality is first-rate. This is the solenoid used on M50 and S50US engines (pre-OBD-II).

If you are looking to install the VANOS solenoid, you should also order the o-ring from the options below. Also check for leaks from the VAN0S oil line and seals. Now is a good time to access and replace it if it's leaking.
