Automatic transmissions are reliable, shift smoothly, and can last without issue so long as they are properly maintained. Over time, the transmission fluid becomes thick and the filter becomes contaminated with small metal particles. This can cause excess wear, high transmission operating temperatures, and eventual failure. To prevent this we recommend changing your filter, fluid, and seals to ensure your transmission continues to operate flawlessly. We recommend filter and fluid changes every 50,000 miles.

Every 60-80,000 miles, we recommend replacing your spark plugs to ensure your ignition system is running optimally. Over time carbon can build up around the head of the spark plug and decrease spark strength and effectiveness, leading to weaker fuel mixture detonation, misfires, and potential check engine lights. Turbo maintenance has become part of our daily lives here. Our Service department does several turbo overhauls, wastegate adjustments, carbon cleaning, and upgrades every week. For the DIY owner, however, having a complete overhaul kit takes some of the stress out of 135/535 turbo replacement and this kit includes all of the basic items. It's highly likely N54 turbos will have to be replaced before 100,000 miles. Signs of a failing turbo are high oil consumption and blue smoke from exhaust (not from a leak or failing CCV system) because the internal oil seals are no longer retaining oil. Without critical lubrication and cooling effects from oil, the turbo shafts and bearings are usually the first to wear and that requires a complete rebuild. You might also see increased turbo lag or failure to hold boost, which is usually a sign of a failing wastegate or some other internal issue. With any internal problems the turbos need to be replaced. 

This package uses new (not rebuilt) Mitsubishi turbochargers (the original supplier to BMW). These are essentially direct replacement turbos but we went straight to the manufacturer instead of going through BMW. They are the same as the factory turbos but without a BMW logo so you save yourself a few hundred dollars. It includes everything that needs replacement during a 135 or 535 N54 twin turbo overhaul -

• Front and rear new OEM Mitsubishi turbos (the original supplier of BMW turbos)
• 1 gallon of Genuine BMW coolant
• ​16 - ASA M7x39 studs
• 16 - Flange nuts
• All required gaskets and o-rings
• Water pump install hardware
• Replacement vacuum hose
• T-bolt clamps

These are brand-new turbos so a core charge does not apply.

This packages covers the major components you would install along with a new water pump or thermostat. On the N54 cars (135i, 335i, 535i) the water pump and theremostat are mounted together. In fact, to get to the thermostat, BMW expects you to remove the water pump. This package covers the whole job. With the electric water pump now an integral part of the efficiency and performance of the engine, staying on top of its maintenance and replacement is the smart thing to do.

  The water pump on the N54 engine has more cooling responsibilities than ever before. Not only must it provide cooling for the engine, but it's also pumping fluid used to cool the turbocharger oil and automatic transmission oil. The good news is that the pump only works when, and only as much, as it needs to. The engine computer dictates how much fluid needs to be pumped through the system depending on the load. That means the system can actually stop the pump when warmer temperatures are needed. No longer is the pump spinning all the time from an engine-driven belt. The bad news is that it's now an electrical part, so a failure is usually immediate and with no warning. And if the electronics are at fault, there is no way to rebuild or repair it. Fortunately, the engine computer will force a shut down or reduce power if a problem occurs, preventing catastrophic engine damage.
  
  How to avoid a water pump failure in the future? Replacing the water pump as part of a regular interval schedule will ensure you always have a functioning pump in place. Since this technology is relatively new for BMW, therefore the lifecycle of the pump isn't yet known, we have been recommending replacement every 80-100k miles. This package of OE/OEM parts covers everything with Original BMW coolant offered to finish off the job. A proper bleeding procedure must be followed with the new electric pump.

Just like the rest of your vehicle's major systems, the cooling system must also be addressed periodically to ensure proper cooling and component reliability. The LL-01 BMW oil specification marks stringent requirements from BMW that oil must meet in order to receive this approval rating. Still used today in many BMW NA and Turbo engines, LL-01 TwinPower Turbo 5w-30 and all LL-01 approved oils are great for ensuring proper wear protection and low fuel consumption, even during high oil change intervals. When BMW LL-04 oil was developed, it was not approved at the time for use in the US. This was due to the high sulfur and ethanol content in US fuels. Originally used mostly for diesel engines and euro motors, LL-04 demand is now starting to pick up with changes in US fuels such as lower sulfur content since 2014 and thanks to LL-04 and LL-01 being interchangeable/compatible. The slight advantage of LL-04 over LL-01 is due to LL-04's higher ZDDP levels and HTHS ratings. This allows for increased engine protection at higher temperatures and engine pressures. In addition, LL-04 also has a lower SAPS level which benefits direct-injection engines, including all BMW turbo engines since 2007.
