In BMW's with the N55, the intake system is partially limited. The bottom portion is lightweight and great for feeding cold air to the intake, but the top portion is excessively restrictive. Working with some of the original equipment, this intake continues to utilize the bottom portion of OE ducting and heat shielding, but replaces the top with new high flow ducting and a performance filter. Extensive testing showed up to a 10+ HP gain to the wheels and allows for quicker turbo spool speed. Plus, this design gives you a great sound improvement, letting you hear both the intake and turbo spooling!

Improve upon the factory design by increasing flow via a larger airbox and filter element thereby improving throttle response and lessening the strain on the turbocharger for maximum efficiency. While box and filter enlargement and redesign is a major factor in ultimately producing a more potent intake they are not the only variables in creating a more efficient design either. The devil is in the details which is where Dinan thrives. Coupled with maintaining Dinan's standard practice of utilizing a sealed system to ensure as much cold, outside air as possible is employed Dinan engineers focused their attention on the intake pipe itself where numerous improvements could be made. In factory configuration, the intake tube comes complete with baffling and a small helmholtz chamber to reduce unwanted sound. As a byproduct, these features also cause a more turbulent air flow path which robs the factory system of potential power. These 2 specific details are diametrically opposed to our intended markets desires so the removal of these features was paramount. Through numerous iterations, a carbon fiber intake tube was developed that eliminated flow disruptions and allowed the natural sound of an unimpeded intake tract to sing. When modifying the car and increasing boost, installing an upgraded intercooler is essential to keep the engine computer from restraining boost as temperatures climb. The stock air-air intercooler is quickly overcome with heat and can't keep the intake air cool enough. If it's too hot the engine computer will reduce power to safer levels. This Dinan intercooler is a dual-core air-air design with an astounding 240% more surface area than the factory intercooler. The temperature at boost is 60% cooler at 6,250 RPM with the Dinan Dual Core compared to stock. Even heat soak at low speeds is reduced, making this a worthwhile addition even for stock or mildly tuned engines. Professional installation is strongly recommended as bumper removal is required and several pieces in the front end need to be cut and trimmed. The factory charge piping in and out of the intercooler is re-used.

It is recommended for any vehicle where the boost pressure has been increased by an ECU software upgrade and for unmodified vehicles operating in warmer climates, as a solution to the many failures that have occurred, where the original rubber diaphragm splits, which causes a loss of boost pressure. Unfortunately the failure doesn’t always result in a check engine light as the valve can still be blown open by the boost pressure, so you may not be aware that you are losing power due to this.

Our alternative is a fully engineered solution offering significantly improved reliability. Our valve is piston based with no diaphragm to fail, and of all aluminium construction. It replaces the original unit with a pressure/vacuum operated piston valve that still also retains the desirable OEM ECU control over valve actuation.

The stock valve on the N55 is prone to failure - the plastic often cracks, causing the valve to stop functioning altogether. 

This Forge valve unit is engineered with a piston, eliminating the diaphragm entirely. Additionally, the Valve is all aluminum - this is the solution to any failures associated with the OEM valve, making your N55 significantly more reliable. This unit retains the OEM ECU controlled valve actuation as well. Includes a plug and play harness that works with the OEM harness.

Turner Motorsport advises being cautious when removing the OEM recirculating valve; if the plastic is cracked, pieces could fall into the turbo upon removal causing serious damage.
