BMW F22 Control Arm Replacements & Upgrades

BMW F22 Control Arm Replacements & Upgrades Control arms, and their integrated ball joints, are some of the most crucial components on a BMW suspension. The control arms literally control the wheel and suspension as they go through their range of motions. They do more than just keep the alignment in a constant spec - they are a vital locating component for the suspension itself. A faulty or worn control arm or ball joint is a very dangerous and potentially life-threatening problem so make sure they are inspected and replaced at regular intervals.

Most control arms for BMWs consist of an inner and outer ball joint made of plastic, rubber, Delrin, or metal and covered in grease with a rubber boot to seal it from the outside. The ball joint rotates and spins as the control arm goes through its movements and that will wear the ball joint and make it loose. The grease inside the housing can also get used up, evaporate, or become contaminated from moisture and foreign particles. As the ball joint becomes worn it can result in excess movement within the housing. Your steering and handling will become less precise and there is usually a light clunking or clicking sound. In rare and extreme cases the ball joint can separate from the control arm completely, leading to a total loss of suspension and steering control. You should have the ball joint play checked annually and replace them every 3-4 years. Most track organizations will not allow a car if they are older than three years.

Control arms also take abuse from impacts and handling forces. Aluminum control arms will generally bend and prevent an accurate alignment. Steel control arms will crack and fracture and require close inspection annually and replacement every 3-4 years.

F22/F3X Front Control Arm Upgrade (F8X M3/M4 Control Arms)
F22 and F30/F32 owners looking for more front camber should look at these M3/M4 front control arms (BMW calls them wishbones, part numbers 31122284529 and 31122284530). These are longer than the stock arms for a bolt-in negative camber increase of 1.0 degree. With camber being so important to handling improvements these are a must-have upgrade. They are a direct bolt-in replacement for the stock F22/F3X wishbones.

One of the other improvements in the M3/M4 design is the inner bushing. Instead of the rubber bushing that wears prematurely and deflects under load, these use a sealed steel bearing that is much more precise than rubber or urethane. The bearing allows complete freedom of motion without deflecting or twisting in undesired directions. But it's not a fully solid bearing so there is no compromises in ride quality. There's almost zero rubber too so the M3/M4 control arms will last much longer than a rubber part.

These are a direct fit to the F22 228/M235 and F3X 320i/328i/335i/428i/435i RWD models only (not AWD). An alignment should be done after the install. If the car has factory xenon headlights you will need the M3/M4 headlight leveling rod and bracket to replace your stock bracket (you can re-use your leveling sensor on the new bracket).

The front inner thrust arm bushing is filled with dampening fluid that leaks over time. Once it's gone the bushing has the strength of a rubber band. For someone looking for superior performance and longevity these sealed monoball bushings are the best out there.

These were originally developed for our IMSA E90 328i and E92 M3 racecars (GS class Champions in 2011). But for this application we chose a sealed monoball with an inner liner to isolate the added noise, vibration, and harshness that a full solid monoball bearing will have. Our monoball thrust arm bushings are more at home on the street than other kits that are advertised as race bushings. We did extensive street, autocross, and track testing to ensure this bushing design excelled in each setting.

The advantage of a monoball bearing is that it will not deflect under load. All of the rubber bushings, including the M3, move in all sorts of directions and that changes your alignment, especially when used with big brake kits or when driven hard. And when worn out, performance suffers. Our monoball sits in a CNC machined aluminum housing which has zero deflection. The monoball allows complete freedom of movement but only at the desired angles. What you get is superior steering precision, better handling from more consistent alignment, and almost infinite bushing life. And thanks to the inner liner and sealed rubber boots there's none of the extra noise or reduced service life of fully solid race bushings.

We offer these thrust arms with the monoball bushings pre-installed for your convenience. Since BMW recommends the control arms be replaced for every other bushing change, we prefer to sell these as a pre-assembled set. The bushings are available separately here if you wish to source your own control arms.

M235iR BMW Motorsport Rear Control Arm Set With Solid Heim Joint Ends (2016 Spec) Rubber has no place on a race car (except for tires, of course). Rubber suspension bushings are one of the first things to get swapped out for our race cars. The more solid the better when it comes to controlling the alignment and keeping your race setup consistent. We use as much solid material as the rules allow. With no deflection, solid bushings also give amazing feedback to the driver. For the M235iR, BMW had two specs for the rear control arms - stock stamped steel control arms with a rubber/neoprene bushing that is slightly stiffer than stock (2014-2015 spec) and these aluminum/stainless steel control arms with solid Heim-jointed ends (2016 spec). An additional benefit to the Heim joints is the arms are adjustable so the alignment can be perfectly dialed in. The front control arms use M3/M4 thrust arms and wishbones with sealed monoball joints. Full solid mounts and bushings will give you many setup options with razor sharp steering and chassis response. Note: 2016-spec rear control arms do not have a spring perch like the factory arms. These are for rear coil over shocks only.
