BMW's B58 engine has been great, but one major weakness is the PCV valve. As stated by BMW, "The PCV's rubber diaphragm seal may fail, causing insufficient engine oil separation. As a result, the engine may emit blue/white smoke from the exhaust tailpipes, shudder during operation, and/or run with reduced power (limp mode). At idle, a high-frequency whistling noise may be heard in the engine compartment, and the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) may also illuminate." If your BMW is experiencing these issues, there is a very likely chance your PCV has failed. If so we recommend replacing your PCV with this Genuine BMW repair kit! il venting and circulation continues to be a problem on BMW engines and the N20 engine is not immune from this. The existing stock system does a poor job of separating fluid and vapor and this leads to an oily film or even small pools of oil throughout the turbos and intake. Performance issues are caused by oil sneaking by the ring seals and is coating the intake piping, intercooler, intake valves, and other critical areas. The problem is worsened with higher boost levels. Oil is excellent for lubricating moving parts but terrible when it gets into the combustion chamber, effectively lowering the octane rating and reducing performance. Our own shop has gone the extra step and offers media and chemical blasting of the intake valves to strip away the oily buildup we have seen. Our shop also strongly recommends an oil catch can be installed in the line for the crankcase vent. The oil catch can traps oil as it leaves the valve cover and holds it in a canister. This catch can is located on the cooler side of the engine where the oil will condense easier and stay in the can. Whatever minimal vapors are left over in the oil is then vented back through the canister and into the intake where it is safe to be burned up in the engine or recirculated back through the system again. This is the way the system was designed! At each oil change simply unscrew the canister and empty the trapped oil with your regular used oil. Installing one of these will avoid costly repairs in the future and help maintain your boost and performance. It's one of the smartest modifications you can make because it demonstrates a well-thought out tuning strategy and care for the condition of your engine. The Mishimoto Oil Catch Can is made from aluminum and with a stealthy black anodized finish. It installs on the cooler side of the engine with a dedicated bracket and new oversized vent lines. The location is key as heat will evaporate the oil and send too much vapor back into the engine (where cooler air will turn it back into fluid). Note: Since the crankcase vent system is considered part of the overall emissions system, installing this may be a violation of local, state, and federal laws. While exemptions are made for track/race and off-road use, check with your local state inspection facility on using this in street-driven vehicles. This item fits the following BMWs with the N20 or N26 turbo engine: 2014-2016 F2X 228i 228i xDrive 2012-2016 F3X 320i 320i xDrive 328i 328i xDrive 428i 428i xDrive WARNING! It's no secret that BMW turbo motors can suffer from oil control problems causing oil to blow through and coat the intercooler and charge piping, gunking up intake valves and the VANOS system, lowering the effective octane, and generally degrading engine performance. The higher your boost levels the more apparent these problems become. The solution to this problem has finally arrived. The BMS oil catch can. While there are other catch cans on the market they all fall short in various areas. Some are mounted on the hot/turbo side of the motor preventing proper vapor condensation. Others utilize hoses that are too small and runs that are too long to allow proper PCV ventilation causing internal motor/ring sealing issues. Some have insufficient or no internal baffle system while others have internal baffles systems that are too restrictive. Some even bypass the PCV system all together venting crankcase gas and odor to the atmosphere. Most are simply repackaged oil catch cans from smaller / lower power motors shoehorned into place in the turbo BMW engine bay. To solve these problems BMS designed their oil catch can kit from the ground up specifically for the turbo BMW application. It features 100% CNC machining with zero welding for a precision fit and long life. The can itself is guaranteed for the life of the vehicle. The hoses exceed the OEM PCV piping in diameter and that flow rate is maintained throughout the entire oil catch can ensuring no excessive crankcase pressure buildup. The BMS OCC retains the factory fully closed loop PCV operation preventing any PCV vapor from leaking to the atmosphere. The mounting locations are selected to minimize the line length, allow more efficient operation, and retain a stealth look. Install takes around 20 minutes, includes all required hardware, and is 100% reversible. Simply unscrew the base of the can or use the drain plug to safely dispose of captured oil with the rest of your used motor oil during oil changes. Made in USA. The MOTIV ReFlex+ is an Advanced I/O Integration module allowing a level of precise control of auxiliary components. Utilizing the CANbus option, multiple digital and analog signals can be used by the DME/ECU for safety, data logging, or adaptive tuning features. It is unique in its ability to function as a separate standalone, as well as a parallel module in conjunction with the DME/ECU. The ReFlex provides the most accurate and precise supplementary sequential fuel injection with the ability to control other advanced features all in one place. It brings a new level of control, function, and versatility to tuning any modern-day vehicle. Preset crank and cam trigger for most modern-day BMW engines, as well as fully configurable triggers to be synched on any vehicle application. Configurable to operate on 4, 5, 6, and 8-cylinder engines. 3 Point MAP sensor calibration table makes it configurable for almost any MAP or TMAP sensor. Sequential Port Injection with the ability to sense individual injector failures on 4 to 8-cylinder engines. Built-in Ethanol Content Analyzer. The Re|Flex firmware and XDFs include ethanol compensation tables to scale properly for varying ethanol % based on real-time input from the sensor. 2x Additional Outputs. These outputs have 12x12 resolution tables for control in TunerPro R/T. These can be configured to run as on/off, digital, frequency (25hz), or PID. Boost Control WGDC Methanol Solenoid Control PWM (for use with valves such as the Aquamist FAV and the ProMeth Pulse Valve) Nitrous Solenoid Control PWM Auxiliary fuel pump relay trigger 2x Inputs Ethanol Content Sensor Fuel Pressure Sensor (0-10bar) Oil Pressure (0-10bar) Coolant Pressure (0-10bar) EGBP/EMAP (0-10bar) CANbus (not required) enabled communication for the transmission and receiving of digital signals for fully DME/ECU integrated control of external modifications. The CANbus communications also allow for data and errors to be transmitted to and from the vehicle's engine control computer in order to add safeguards and implement engine trips and fail safes. Logging via OBDII is still fully functional and is not affected at all by the communication with the Re|Flex. Some of the developments underway include: Error reporting to and from factory ECU for unparalleled safety Output WGDC by converting an EWG signal to a more conventional DC output for controlling standard 3port and 4port boost solenoids for use with external WG’s The ability to datalog non-factory parameters such as ethanol content, additional pressure sensor, PI IDC, and more! These features make the Re|Flex the most powerful and safest supplementary and auxiliary controller on the market. However, this is only the beginning. As flash platforms find the need for more accessories to control, the Re|Flex was designed to be updated easily by the end user in order to add functionality as it is developed.
