Pierburg BMW Cooling System Parts & Accessories for BMW 3 Series F30 (2012+)

The cooling system is arguably the weakest point in numerous BMWs. If you drive an aging BMW or plan on taking your car to the track like we do, we recommend beefing up your cooling system before going to the track. Generally, the main components in your cooling system that are prone to failure include the following: expansion tank, factory hoses, water pump, thermostat, fan (especially if your vehicle comes factory with a clutch fan), and radiator. Factory BMW expansion tanks are plastic and prone to either breaking off at connection points or combusting. As factory rubber hoses age they either crack or break over time - we offer silicone cooling hose upgrades for most applications to avoid future failures. If you have an older vehicle, your water pump likely comes from the factory with a plastic impeller - we offer upgraded water pumps with metal impellers that are far more reliable. Newer model BMWs utilize electric water pumps - BMW spent millions of dollars engineering these water pumps, but they fail so often that we recommend replacing at 60,000 mile service intervals to avoid being stranded on the side of the road. In terms of thermostats, we offer various upgraded thermostats for racing applications. If your BMW utilizes a clutch fan from the factory, we have several options available in terms of universal electric fans - we recommend replacing these to avoid sending brittle plastic fan blades through your hood. For radiators, we recommend swapping out your radiator for one that does not use plastic connection points like your factory radiator.

The water pump in your vehicle keeps all that coolant flowing freely. If it begins to fail, overheating problems are inevitable. Don't take a chance on doing damage to engine internals by not replacing your water pump. This has been a common problem amongst most German vehicles. Water Pump failure can lead to your vehicle making an unnecessary trip to the repair shop. If your pump stops working, coolant temperatures rise rapidly and can overheat the engine, leading to head gasket or even piston ring failure. This is a great preventative maintenance item when doing any type of timing belt replacement. This is a common replacement around 80,000-100,000 miles.

This is the high quality Pierburg electric water pump for F30 F32 F22 models with the N55 6 cylinder turbo engine. The electric water pumps on older N54 and N55 engines tended to be failure prone. The N55 water pump is electrically driven and varies output based on instructions from the engine computer. Under the best circumstances the pump drives only as much coolant as needed and will shut down or activate as load and performance demands change (combustion chamber temperatures are dynamically changed based on economy, normal, and performance demands). The pump can also run when the car is off to reduce heat soak in the engine and turbo(s). The water pump is now a factor in how much power and fuel economy your car is producing, making it all the more critical to replace during normal maintenance. If a fault or excessive temperature is reached, the dash cluster will display a yellow or red water temp icon depending on the severity of the condition. The car's electronics will begin shutting down various systems in the car to divert more resources to the cooling system. This can include reducing power output and activating 'limp mode'. The best way to avoid problems and system failures? Preventative maintenance and overhaul of the cooling system, starting with the water pump (and thermostat).
