BMW has a knack for maintaining its stake as the benchmark when it comes to performance luxury vehicles, with the F8X generation being no exception. The S55 that powers the 2015–2020 BMW F8X M3, M4 and M2 Competition is dripping with technology, which includes an air-to-water intercooler as a means of keeping cool. Where BMW’s intercooler design was enough to help bring this generation of mid-sized M’s to their peak, we here at Mishimoto found some weaknesses that we felt obliged to address. We started with the end tanks. The Mishimoto Performance Air-to-Water Intercooler features full, cast aluminum end tanks, TIG-welded to our bar-and-plate core for maximum durability as you increase the boost in your Bimmer. Our end tanks also include internal air diverters on both the inlet and outlet to ensure an even flow of charged air through the core. When it comes to the core, bigger is better, and we were able to expand the size of our core in all dimensions, resulting in a 29% increase in core volume while abstaining from any modifications when it comes to the installation. Our new core also features a unique single-pass internal fin layout for the coolant passage for optimal heat transfer from the charged air to the coolant. With our improvements combined, we saw the Mishimoto 2015–2020 BMW F8X M3 and M4 Performance Intercooler increase flow through the core by 16% and recorded a 12°F drop in intake air temperatures when tested with the Mishimoto Performance Heat Exchanger. We also recorded an average increase of 11 whp and 8 wtq during our testing with peak gains of up to 31 whp and 10 wtq. With the micro-wrinkle black finish and sleek header plate design, the Mishimoto Performance Air-to-Water Intercooler makes the perfect addition to your F8X build and looks right at home in the M’s engine bay. This charge pipe kit from FTP motorsports will not only improve flow over stock but also make a big improvement in the reliability column. The factory charge pipes are made from plastic to reduce weight and manufacturing costs. While this is great for the production line and the sticker price, it doesn't hold up well as the engine ages or in the case of increased power. This set of pipes will not only allow the engine to hold more boost, but they will outlast the stock indefinitely. Aluminum is also a rigid material, meaning it doesn't deform or flex very easily. What this translates to is increased reliability since an aluminum pipe cant flex and decouple itself as plastic does. One more feature to note is the 1/8"NPT fitting in the throttle body pipe. Improve the cooling capacity for your 2015–2020 BMW M3 or M4 with the Mishimoto Performance Heat Exchanger. Air-to-water intercooling is a means of more efficient heat transfer from the charged air, but it now requires an additional heat exchanger mounted to the front of the vehicle in order to dissipate the transferred heat. The S55 powering the F8X generation of M’s packs quite a punch thanks to the A2W system. While the BMW engineers laid the foundation for dissipating heat from the intercooling system, we still saw some room to improve on their design. We started by eliminating any bits of plastic and promptly replaced the end tanks, including the inlet and outlet ports, with durable aluminum. We kept the dual-pass flow through the core for maximum cooling properties while expanding the core into the available space. Our new design features a 42mm thick core while extending the height by 150 mm, totaling in a 60% increase in core volume and a 180% increase in fin surface area. The end result of our improvements is a 10°F drop in global intercooling temperatures over the stock unit. Size isn’t the only thing that matters with this heat exchanger. Since the heat exchanger sits front and center in the M3 and M4’s cooling stack, it’s susceptible to damage from road debris. To keep your air-to-water system safe, our heat exchanger comes equipped with an optional steel mesh stone guard for an added layer of protection for the fins. We also incorporated a variable fin pitch for the lower 12 rows on the core in order to facilitate cooling to DCT-equipped M's. Finally, our 2015–2020 BMW F8X M3/M4 Performance Heat Exchanger includes the Mishimoto Lifetime Warranty for a worry-free install. In BMW's with the S55, the intake system is partially limited. The bottom portion is lightweight and great for feeding cold air to the intake, but the top portion is excessively restrictive. Working with some of the original equipment, this intake continues to utilize the bottom portion of OE ducting and heat shielding, but replaces the top with new high flow intake tubes and dual inverted performance cone filters. The factory charge pipes are poorly designed due to being completely flattened coming out of the turbos, before the intercooler. These VTT S55 silicone charge pipes get rid of those restrictions and provide a full 2″ ID from the turbochargers into the intercooler, as well as not allowing any heat soak to occur like other aluminum pipes on the market. The VTT charge pipes are a full 7 ply wire reinforced silicone, with an extra layer of silicone on the interior, tested to over 150psi. They are available in 3 colors. A common issue on S55 engines is when the plastic OE j-pipe cracks leading to boost leaks. DO88 saw this issue and designed a new metal j-pipe to take its place. Having 3D scanned the engine bay of an M3C, the team at DO88 was able to precisely see how much room they had to work with to get a perfect fit.
