The roller rocker arms transfer the rotational force of the camshaft to open the intake and exhaust valves. One end is raised and lowered by the rotating lobe of the camshaft, while the other end acts on the associated valve stem. If a roller rocker arm has failed you may experience a constant ticking noise during engine operation, or alternatively if the rocker arm has broken, you will receive multiple misfires and a rough running engine.

Includes everything needed for a rod bearing service, featuring BE Bearings upgraded rod bearings. The S65 engine has a known history of rod bearing failure, and if your engine is higher mileage, don't let this catastrophic failure happen to you. Replace your rod bearings and prevent a spun bearing which can trash your crankshaft. BE Bearings, in conjunction with Clevite, an OE bearing manufacturer, have redesigned and manufactured the bearings for greater clearance and have changed the original material composition from tin-aluminum to lead-copper. This upgrade incorporated the state-of-the-art Clevite Tri-Metal design and featured a Tri-Armor™ coating. This allows for the additional lubrication for wear prevention, plus, the softer bearings are better for your engine and are more tolerant of foreign particles suspended in your oil. Another benefit from this is that the oil can now be sent for testing to accurately gauge the amount of wear occurring in the engine. Replacing the rod bearings requires mechanical knowledge and skill, a clean workspace, and several specialist tools. Our preferred procedure is to leave the engine in the car but remove the front subframe. The engine must be supported from above with an engine brace. Removing the front subframe involves disconnecting the control arms and steering rack and steering column. The oil pan can then be removed and you can access the connecting rods and bearings. Replacing the rod bearings themselves is straightforward but patience and forethought will be extremely helpful. In addition to analyzing the severity of the rod bearing wear, the crankshaft must also be inspected closely for damage. Rod bearings that have been severely worn may have damaged the crankshaft (requiring replacement or machining).

Under certain conditions, the N55 crank hub likes to spin, without warning and even when the engine is in perfect health. The engineers at Vargas saw and dealt with this problem time and again, and they saw fit to do something about it. This hub uses a proprietary "Spline Lock" technology that uses high tolerance machined splines which press into the crank, and positively lock the hub to the crank. The splines are machined in such a way that rotational forces drive the hub, and splines deeper into the crank meaning when the hub encounters a situation that would normally slip a stock hub the splined hub is driven into the crank to keep it in place (much like a splined extractor). Features: Installs the same as a stock hub Does NOT require the crank to be drilled for pins Manufactured from Harndered 17-4SS We suggest the Crank Hub System ONLY be installed by a qualified shop or technician. Timing tools are 100% REQUIRED if installed improperly engine damage may occur. DISCLAIMER: VTT and ECS are not responsible for any engine damage caused by improper installation, or misuse of the crank hub solution.

Rod bearings should be replaced as a preventative measure before 80,000 miles. This package is the most complete rod bearing overhaul kit available and includes not just the latest BMW rod bearings and connecting rod bolts, but also everything else that should be replaced with the oil pan and front subframe off the car.

Rod bearings continue to be a sore subject among M3, M5, and M6 owners. The rod bearings in the S85 V10 have been known to fail within 60,000 miles. There could be a number of reasons for premature failure with a lot of finger-pointing as to the real cause. Whatever the reason, rod bearings are wearing out sooner than expected and their replacement should be considered a required preventative maintenance item. We suggest a replacement interval of between 60,000-80,000 miles with frequent engine oil analysis done along the way*. Driving moderately and allowing the engine to warm up before hard use will also extend rod bearing life.

After doing so many rod bearing replacements in our own service shop we have put together this comprehensive overhaul package. Our package includes -

Genuine BMW rod bearings
- 11247841703, upper bearings - latest design from BMW (either original or WPC treated**)
- 11247841702, upper bearings - latest design from BMW (either original or WPC treated**)
- 11247834522, connecting rod bolts
- Red Line engine assembly lube

Oil Pan
- 11137836361, oil pan gasket
- 07119905485, oil pan screws (required by BMW)
- 07129905600, oil pan screws (required by BMW)
- 11137836568, oil pan screws
- 07119963129, seal washers
- 11417836233, auxiliary oil pump gaskets
- 11121304174, oil pickup tube o-ring

* BMW released an updated rod bearing around 2011 that uses different materials than the original design. The old rod bearings were constructed with several layers or metal, including copper and lead. If an engine oil analysis revealed high levels of these specific metals then it was a sure sign that the rod bearings were nearing replacement. However, the new BMW bearings do not use copper or lead so an oil analysis will not alert you to heavy bearing wear. The new bearings are also a harder material which prolonged the life of the bearing but increased the liklihood of crankshaft damage if a bearing failed. Even though the bearing theoretically lasts longer it's even more important to preventativly replace them before they damage the crankshaft.

** These WPC-treated bearings are the best we have seen for the S85. WPC is a shot-peening treatment at a microscopic level. It's perfect for sensitive surfaces like bearings. The WPC treatment removes imperfections and high spots, while creating a surface that retains oil better than the original surface. This greatly reduces friction. The bearings in this kit are factory BMW bearings that are sent to WPC for treatment. The treated bearings are stronger with less metal fatigue and less friction than buying off-the-shelf bearings from the dealer.

***BE Bearings is another top pick when considering which bearing kit to choose. Working with Clevite, an OE bearing supplier, their design allows for a bit more clearance than stock, allowing better oil circulation and reducing friction. The material is also made from the original bearing composition of lead-copper, not the updated tin-aluminum used in factory BMW bearings which was excessively hard, potentially damaging the crankshaft when high friction occurred. This softer metal composition can also be tested for via oil analysis, allowing you to see high bearing wear, something the tin-aluminum bearings don't give you the ability to do.

Internal VANOS Pressure Line
One of the VANOS oil lines runs along the inside of the timing chain cover and into the oil pan. It can only be replaced with the oil pan removed. If you have sluggish performance or VANOS fault codes this is one of the common causes and now is the perfect time to replace it. If it fails down the line the oil pan will have to be removed again.

Front Subframe Hardware
Our preferred procedure for accessing the engine block is by disconnecting the control arms and steering rack and then removing the front subframe altogether. This hardware is not required but may be a good idea, especially if your original subframe bolts are rusty. Hardware includes:
31106760222, front subframe mounting bolts
31106770256, front subframe mounting bolts
33326760668, front wishbone collar nut

Tie Rod Boots

07129904865, motor mount nuts

Anyone with a modified N54 knows the risks involved. Upping the performance of any engine can come with some inherent risk; if we add more boost but not fuel, detonation will occur (or worse). Furthermore, improper installation, maintenance, or operation can turn a perfectly healthy engine into a paperweight. The worst failures, however, are the ones we don't plan for. When the engine simply can't handle the stresses its put under, or the design is such that it simply does not support extreme conditions. Enter the N54 crank hub. Under certain conditions, it likes to spin without warning, even when the engine is in perfect health. The engineers at Vargas saw and dealt with this problem time and again, and they saw fit to do something about it. This hub uses a proprietary "Spline Lock" technology that uses high tolerance machined splines that press into the crank and positively lock the hub to the crank. The splines are machined in such a way that rotational forces drive the hub, and splines deeper into the crank meaning when the hub encounters a situation that would normally slip a stock hub the splined hub is driven into the crank to keep it in place (much like a splined extractor). Vargas spent many months testing, and retesting this design, utilizing well over 10 different samples to come to the final production version. During testing, the final hub managed to break the testing rig before slipping. These have been bench-tested, and real-world tested on the VTT N54 race car spinning 8K RPM, and making well over 900WHP. DISCLAIMER: VTT and Turner Motorsport are not responsible for any engine damage caused by improper installation, or misuse of the crank hub solution.

Despite the fact that BMW engineers some of the worlds most revered engines, during number crunching something always has to be a compromise. One item that is always found to be a weak point- the OEM hardware. It is definitely sub-par for real performance use under high stress such as modded engines and track use. We use these fasteners on all of VAC's in-house head builds. Whenever the head is coming off, your switching to forced induction, or if you are simply prepping to drive your car hard; we highly recommend switching to far superior race-grade hardware. These Head Stud Kits greatly improve reliability; helping to eliminate movement of the of the cylinder head and intern, gasket failure caused by inferior OEM head-bolt stretch. This is the #1 cause of premature head gasket failure, especially on boosted or high output engines. Though more expensive than OEM, converting to one of VAC's head studs kits will not only give added strength and reliability when its needed most, but provides the most accurate torque readings because studs don’t “twist” into the block; all clamping forces are on one axis, and there is less force exerted on the normally stressed threads of the block. This increases block and hardware life and typically makes the head easier to properly install to the block, a blessing if your head may have to be removed more than once. Especially in the time crunch of racing, when engines are dissembled frequently, studs make removing and installing the cylinder head on to the block a much easier task. By allowing the studs to act as a guide on to the head, your head slides on and off and also ensures proper alignment of the head and gasket for the same reason. It is similar to converting your wheel-bolts to wheel-studs.

E46 M3 Schrick 280 Degree Exhaust Camshaft with 12.5mm lift. This was originally desinged for the M3 CSL but works great in the standard M3. This cam is slightly more agressive than the "original" Schrick 272 degree (which we also offer). A new rocker arm is required (Schrick or new BMW part #11337833259).

DISCLAIMER: VTT and Turner Motorsport are not responsible for any engine damage caused by improper installation, or misuse of the crank hub solution.

VTT is proud to offer the only complete N54 complete crank hub solution that does NOT require the crank to be drilled for pins. Our hub uses our proprietary “Spline Lock” technology that uses high tolerance machined splines which press into the crank, and positively lock the hub to the crank. The splines are machined in such a way that rotational forces drive the hub, and splines deeper into the crank meaning when the hub encounters a situation that would normally slip a stock hub the splined hub is driven into the crank to keep it in place (much like a splined extractor). We spent many months testing, and retesting this design, utilizing well over 10 different samples to come to our final production version. During testing, our final hub managed to break our testing rig before slipping. These have been bench tested, and real-world tested on the VTT N54 race car spinning 8K RPM and making well over 900WHP. This technology means our hub installs the same as a stock hub, no drilling of the crank, which means MUCH less labor is involved and is reversible is ever wanting to be uninstalled leaving no holes in the crank. The “Spline Lock” is ONLY available with the VTT Crank bolt capture for the ULTIMATE Crank Hub solution for your BMW. The S65 engine has a known history of rod bearing failure, and if your engine is higher mileage, don't let this catastrophic failure happen to you. Replace your rod bearings and prevent a spun bearing which can trash your crankshaft. What is WPC, you ask? WPC is a surface treatment that reduces friction and adds strength - two improvements that benefit internal engine components. Ultra-fine particles are fired at the surface at very high speeds, like shot-peening - but much, much smaller. The parts come out smoother and stronger due to thermal discharge. The two largest enemies of any high-performance engine are heat and friction - and WPC has found a way to reduce both. What are you waiting for? Use WPC-treated bearings on your next engine build or rod bearing service! Kit includes Upper and lower WPC Treated Genuine BMW Rod Bearings Hardware Oil filter Castrol TWS Edge Professional Oil pan gasket RedLine assembly lube

The BMW Motorsport Cam Gear retards the exhaust camshaft of the 88-91 M3 and 88-89 M5 and M6. This allows for better exhaust scavenging, which in turn gives a moderate torque increase. This is very useful in day-to-day driving. This cam gear came stock on the EVO2 M3. (+11 lb./ft torque increase at 3000 rpm on M3 and +22 lb./ft on a M5/M6). Kit includes Cam gear and valve cover gaskets. Better acceleration and improved torque for your M5/M6

One major hurdle for a track-only car is the limitation of the hydraulic valve lifters in the M50, S50-US, M52, S52-US, M52TU, and M54 engines. These effectively limit your revs to 7200-7300 RPM as the valves 'float' at higher revs, leading to piston-valve contact. By converting to a machined solid lifter, and upgrading other areas of the engine, you can configure the valve train to withstand high RPM running. Not only can you tune for more power, you can help prevent damage during a mild mechanical over-rev.

This kit includes the mechanical spacers to convert hydraulic lifter tappets to solid lifters. The lifter bucket remains in place with the Schrick solid tappet replacing the original. These work on all M50, M52, S50, S52 and M54 engines and were proven in normally aspirated as well as supercharged engines. A custom camshaft is required.

Professional installation and setup is mandatory as these require complete assembly of the head, checking valve lash, then dis-assembly and machining of the Schrick tappet to spec. This kit includes enough spacers for 24 valves. We also carry individual parts, if you are looking for single pieces. This price is for a full set of 24.

For the US E36 M3. Schrick 264/256 degree camshafts boost mid-high end power for that extra motivation at higher rpm. Low-end torque is not seriously affected due to the M50/M52s VAN0S System. And, higher profile cams work extremely well with an upgraded intake and exhaust. When upgrading the cams there are other areas you must take into consideration. Higher-flow fuel injectors, larger mass-air sensor, and custom programming are strongly recommended. Turner Motorsport sells complete intake & cam packages that boost power to over 290hp. See the Engine section under Camshafts for more info.
