The factory BMW cooling components just aren’t built for high-performance or track use. Both the OE radiator and heat exchanger feature weak plastic end tanks and undersized single-row cores—common failure points when exposed to elevated heat and pressure. ECS set out to solve these shortcomings with an all-aluminum, dual-row system designed for enthusiasts who demand more from their BMW. ECS engineers started by replacing the fragile plastic end tanks with TIG-welded 6061-T6 aluminum for unmatched durability. Each tank is precision-crafted with CNC-machined billet aluminum hose connections, flanges, and brackets, ensuring direct OE-style fitment with the factory hoses, fan shroud, and accessories—no cutting or modifications required.
Both the radiator and heat exchanger feature high-capacity, dual-row 42mm cores, a massive improvement over the factory’s 34mm and 25mm single-row designs. The result? Faster heat dissipation, lower intake air temperatures, and more consistent performance, whether you’re cruising or carving apexes.

With 50% more frontal area than the factory IC the Wagner-designed kit is much more efficient. And that helps maintain your boost levels and performance! The factory intercooler is quickly overcome with heat and that leads to a loss of boost and performance. Factor in greater boost levels and other modifications and the more heat soak will put you out of the running. The solution is an intercooler with more capacity for cooling and Wagner has chosen the stepped design to maximize the available surface area in the front end. The step is a thicker bar and plate core with an additional set of rows on top that takes advantage of un-used space in the nose. In our eyes, the best intercooler upgrade is one that not only works but also installs with a minimum amount of fuss.

It's a direct bolt-on replacement for your stock intercooler - no removing the bumper or modifying brackets or wrestling with plumbing. Core size measures 20.5"x5.1"x8.25". Wagner has also engineered their end-tanks in aluminum instead of the factory plastic, which is much more durable over the long term. The CAD and FEM process also allows them to design their cooler internals without any bottlenecks or restrictions. When modifying the car and increasing boost, installing an upgraded intercooler is essential to keep the engine computer from restraining boost as temperatures climb. The stock air-air intercooler is quickly overcome with heat and can't keep the intake air cool enough. If it's too hot the engine computer will reduce power to safer levels. This Dinan intercooler is a dual-core air-air design with an astounding 240% more surface area than the factory intercooler. The temperature at boost is 60% cooler at 6,250 RPM with the Dinan Dual Core compared to stock. Even heat soak at low speeds is reduced, making this a worthwhile addition even for stock or mildly tuned engines. Professional installation is strongly recommended as bumper removal is required and several pieces in the front end need to be cut and trimmed. The factory charge piping in and out of the intercooler is re-used.

This ECS intercooler replaces the stock MINIature intercooler with a MASSIVE 250% larger surface area and a 125% thicker base core! This increase in core size improves flow while cooling compressed air into the intake manifold. Cast aluminum end tanks are TIG welded and feature machined transitions for maximum flow. This intercooler features a special black powder coating to prevent fin corrosion, as well as improve overall heat transfer to insure the lowest possible outlet temperatures.

Our ECS Intercooler has been designed to improve on every restrictive element of the stock cooler, enhancing cooling efficiency by lowering intake air temperatures even compared to the R56 Cooper S aluminum intercooler, allowing you to continuously push your car without the detriment of heat soak!
This ECS Front Mount Intercooler Kit was designed, engineered, tested, and quality inspected by our Research and Development team at our Wadsworth, Ohio facility. We strive for the highest level of precision and quality through leading-edge product development technology including FARO laser scanning for reverse engineering and quality inspection, SolidWorks 3D CAD modeling, rapid prototyping utilizing our in-house 3D printer, and rigorous long-term product testing.
NOTE: A performance tune is not required to run this intercooler. A tune will only increase the output of the engine when equipped with this intercooler.
