BMW Control Arm Replacements & Upgrades

Control arms, and their integrated ball joints, are some of the most crucial components on a BMW suspension. The control arms literally control the wheel and suspension as they go through their range of motions. They do more than just keep the alignment in a constant spec - they are a vital locating component for the suspension itself. A faulty or worn control arm or ball joint is a very dangerous and potentially life-threatening problem so make sure they are inspected and replaced at regular intervals.

Most control arms for BMWs consist of an inner and outer ball joint made of plastic, rubber, Delrin, or metal and covered in grease with a rubber boot to seal it from the outside. The ball joint rotates and spins as the control arm goes through its movements and that will wear the ball joint and make it loose. The grease inside the housing can also get used up, evaporate, or become contaminated from moisture and foreign particles. As the ball joint becomes worn it can result in excess movement within the housing. Your steering and handling will become less precise and there is usually a light clunking or clicking sound. In rare and extreme cases the ball joint can separate from the control arm completely, leading to a total loss of suspension and steering control. You should have the ball joint play checked annually and replace them every 3-4 years. Most track organizations will not allow a car if they are older than three years.

Control arms also take abuse from impacts and handling forces. Aluminum control arms will generally bend and prevent an accurate alignment. Steel control arms will crack and fracture and require close inspection annually and replacement every 3-4 years.

We sell OE BMW, OEM, and performance upgrade control arms from proven manufacturers. The control arm is so important to a BMW suspension that we insist on only top quality brands and designs and will never sell a control arm based on price alone. We also have upgrade packages with superior designs and better bushing options and we have bundled these together with valuable package savings.

Enhance your driving experience with our premium suspension upgrade for your BMW. Over time, the road can take a toll on your suspension, leading to a sloppy and weak feel while driving. Our solution? Replace the control arm – a critical component that, after years of service, may wear out. Boost safety and ride comfort with this easy upgrade.

  • Improved driving experience
  • Enhanced safety
  • Better ride comfort

If you're considering replacing any part of your front or rear suspension, opt for doing it in pairs (both left and right sides). This ensures optimal performance and longevity of the replacement parts. In the BMW world, it's often referred to as a wishbone.

For non-M3 models, this isn't just a replacement – it's a performance upgrade. These heavy-duty components are recommended to be replaced in pairs to maximize their efficiency and provide a seamless driving experience.

These front control arm bushings are the same design as the original pieces but are 20% stiffer in resistance to give sharper steering and better response. These are the larger 66mm bushings with the housings as used on the E46 325i, 330i, and Z4 and an upgrade for the E46 323i and 328i.

If you have felt that the original bushings were too soft or the car lacked response then these HD bushings will be a great upgrade for you. The stiffer rubber allows less deflection, making the suspension react faster. You will immediately notice that the car feels more direct and 'connected' and the steering keeps up with you especially during hard cornering. For maximum effect, we also recommend the Meyle HD or BMW 'Sport' control arms as an additional upgrade. Meyle HD parts have a 4-year warranty.

These bushings come pre-pressed into their aluminum brackets. No need to press out old and press in new bushings! Just a simple swap! Price is for the pair.

This left/driver's front upper control arm - also know as a tension strut or thrust arm. This is the control arm with the outer ball joint pointing down. This is the OE BMW replacement (made by TRW) and fits E82 1M Coupe and E90/E92/E93 M3. This control arm includes the inner pressed in bushing and outer ball joint. A direct replacement from the original manufacturer.

This part can also be used as an upgrade on non-M E82, E9X, and E89 Z4 models. The inner bushing on the M3 arm is a solid rubber instead of the fluid-filled non-M design. This solid rubber part will last longer and be more responsive thanks to less deflection in the bushing. The M3 arm is a direct replacement for the stock non-M part.

This item fits the following BMWs:

One common weak point in the E46 3-series model range is in the mounting and ball joints of the suspension. The front suspension ball joints in particular are prone to wearing out quite quickly thanks to a soft material, leaving you in a potentially dangerous situation. At best, worn ball joints and bushings will give you poor steering feedback and clunking noises. However, loose or worn ball joints will have excessive play which will reduce the effectiveness of the steering and suspension. In extreme cases, the ball joint has been known to pop free of the control arm, resulting in total steering loss. Meyle has addressed this problem with metal ball joints, similar to those used on the E46 ZHP. The metal in the HD joint will not wear or fatigue nearly as fast as the standard ball joints. The lifespan is greatly extended. The lack of play will mean sharper steering, restoring much of the car's precision and fun-to-drive character. Meyle is a German brand in business since 1958 and all of their products are TUV approved and meet or exceed ISO standards.

Control arm bushings play a key role in connecting the wheels to the chassis of the vehicle. Tasked with keeping suspension geometry in check while absorbing noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) factory rubber bushings were engineered to provide a balance of comfort and control. As a factory bushing ages, it becomes brittle and begins to harden. When this happens the bushing will actually shrink and allow excess play in the suspension joint. This is typically felt by a sudden jerk forward after the car comes to a stop and is a leading cause of "sloppy" or "loose" suspension feel. By replacing the bushing with a full polyurethane unit or using a bushing insert, this play is eliminated since the suspension joint is being supported by a much stiffer material that will not harden or shrink over time. Additionally, the inherent stiffness of the urethane material translates body forces much more directly. This means steering inputs from the driver are effectively transferred to the wheels and vital road information is transmitted properly from the wheels to the driver.

Engineered to perform, Powerflex performance polyurethane control arm bushings offer a supreme level of control, while still providing enough comfort for the street, with advanced polyurethane that reduces NVH that often accompanies lesser bushings. The M3 control arm upgrade is for people who want a very serious change in the ride/handling of the car. These are the factory OEM E9X M3 upper control arms, so the ride will not be much different than a standard M3. But it is a very large jump compared to the stock E9X arms and bushings, since they are not fluid-filled and have a harder rubber compound than the stock or Meyle HD bushings. These are direct replacements for the original arms, do not require any modification to install, and will add about .75 degrees of negative camber to the front for improved handling and tire wear

Stock rubber control arm bushings give a disconnected and mushy feel to the front suspension, especially when worn, as the bushing deflects more than it should. You get sloppy steering, vibrations, and poor handling which makes the car feel unstable. These urethane bushings are stiffer than stock rubber and will not deflect as much. This helps keep the alignment in check with less variation. The car feels more planted and confidence-inspiring. And a lifetime warranty means you'll likely never have to pay for another bushing ever again! Powerflex polyurethane subframe bushings are firmer than OEM bushings, resulting in better handling, a more planted rear-end, and more efficient suspension articulation - all with minimal sacrifice to ride quality. Powerflex is the number one selling suspension bushing manufacturer in Europe. Their experience with polyurethane bushing material and state-of-the art manufacturing techniques allows them to produce premium performance bushings, made to exact-fit standards. Powerflex performance polyurethane bushings are built to last longer than OEM rubber bushings, while improving performance and allowing for a more engaging driving experience. Use of Powerflex Copper Grease PCG1 is recommended for ease of installation. Periodic reapplication is recommended to extend squeak-free service life of bushings. Powerflex street bushings are ideal for street driven vehicles and those that see occasional autocross or track time. Need bushings for a dedicated track car? Powerflex Black Series bushings are the ultimate in track and race bushings. Featuring 95A durometer polyurethane, Black Series bushings are 25% stiffer than street bushings.

Rear trailing arm bushings serve the key purpose of keeping rear suspension triangulated and the vehicle moving where it's directed to. Though failure prone, even factory-fresh OEM rubber bushings allow for deflection, causing suspension geometry changes on hard launches, over bumps in the road, and during cornering. This deflection results in clunking in the rear end, a “rear steer” feeling, and uneven tire wear.
Powerflex polyurethane rear trailing arm bushings are firmer than OEM bushings, resulting in a reduction of deflection that causes these suspension angle changes, improving handling over bumps and with a proper alignment, extending tire wear.

These M3 rear guide rod arms are an upgrade for the non-M cars. The stock non-M arms are made from sheetmetal spot welded together at the ends. The arm tends to flex and bend under even moderate cornering loads. Factor in gripper tires and more torque and this arm is inadequate for stability and consistent handling. The M3 arms are one piece of aluminum offering greater strength and with a sealed monoball inner bushing that allows the arm to rotate (instead of twisting).

The Powerflex Rear Lower Control Arm Inner Bushing for BMW E36 and E46 3 Series, Z4, and X3 is designed to provide a significant upgrade over the factory rubber bushings. By using high-performance polyurethane, these bushings enhance the stability, responsiveness, and overall performance of the rear suspension system.

Key Benefits:

  1. Enhanced Handling Performance: The stiffer polyurethane material reduces flex and improves the rigidity of the rear control arm, resulting in better handling and stability during cornering and aggressive driving maneuvers.
  2. Durability and Longevity: Unlike standard rubber bushings, these polyurethane bushings are engineered to withstand wear from road debris, oil, and temperature fluctuations, ensuring they maintain performance over time.
  3. Improved Steering Feedback: With reduced movement and play in the rear suspension, these bushings provide a more direct connection to the road, enhancing steering responsiveness and driver control.
  4. Precision Fitment: Specifically designed for BMW E36 and E46 3 Series, Z4, and X3 models, these bushings ensure an accurate fit and easy installation, making them a straightforward upgrade for enthusiasts.

These bushings are ideal for BMW owners looking to improve the handling dynamics and durability of their vehicle’s rear suspension, suitable for both daily driving and performance-oriented applications.

Control arms, and their integrated ball joints, are some of the most crucial components on a BMW suspension. The control arms literally control the wheel and suspension as they go through their range of motions. A faulty or worn control arm or ball joint is a very dangerous and potentially life-threatening problem so make sure they are inspected and replaced at regular intervals. For a street-driven car we advise yearly inspection and a full replacement every 3-4 years. For track-driven cars these should be inspected before every event and replaced every two years.

The original factory bushings are fluid filled and rely on the fluid to absorb vibration and resist deflection. When the fluid is gone the rubber left over cannot match the original bushing's strength. The left over rubber is not stiff enough to resist the movements from the suspension. The result is a lot of vibration and reduced feedback and response from the steering.

Meyle has addressed this issue with bushings that are not fluid-filled. The bushing is made of solid rubber that will last longer than the original bushing and is a bit stiffer than new originals for better response and feel. The lack of play from the solid rubber design will mean sharper steering, restoring much of the car's precision and 'connected' feel.

This control arm comes with the Meyle HD bushings already pressed in. This makes for an easy swap out-swap in install. These arms replace the existing stock upper control arms - otherwise known as a tension strut or strut support arm. It's the arm with the twist.

Meyle is a German brand in business since 1958 and all of their products are TUV approved and meet or exceed ISO standards. All Meyle HD parts come with a 4-year, unlimited mileage warranty.

Over the years, the road takes a serious toll on your suspension. Potholes, speed bumps, and road hazards all contribute to a sloppy, weak suspension. To give a better feel to your driving experience and improve safety and ride comfort, replace suspension components as they wear. After years of service, non-serviceable ball joints and other components begin to wear out. Because some components cannot be replaced, the only solution is the replacement of the entire arm. This OEM TRW kit includes all four front control arms for the E9X M3 / E82 1M. Replacing all four at once will provide the most service life out of replacement parts and ensure they are all performing properly. This kit is intended for installation on Halogen headlight-equipped models, as a headlight level sensor rod is not included.

Engineered to perform, Powerflex performance polyurethane control arm bushings offer a supreme level of control, while still providing enough comfort for the street, with advanced polyurethane that reduces NVH that often accompanies lesser bushings. Expect improved steering feel, turn in, more responsive handling and overall improved chassis composure with Powerflex performance polyurethane control arm bushings.

Poweflex is a leading manufacturer of aftermarket suspension bushings. Using state of the art design and manufacturing, all replacement bushings are engineered to out-perform and out-last the ones that came in the car. Each line of bushings is meticulously tested and then re-tested to ensure perfect fitment and enduring quality through the life of the vehicle. A full lifetime warranty backs every one of their products and demonstrates the level of confidence and commitment Powerflex has to their customers.
