Timing systems tend to be a weak point in the world of German automotives. Chains stretch over time, sometimes even snapping, and guides wear down to dangerous levels. This can end up be disastrous as too much slack in the chain can mean a slipping timing chain which could lead to timing issues or even a destroyed cylinder head and damaged pistons.

The BMW M60 and M62 engines found in many 5 series, 7 series, and X5's has two major weak points over time - Vanos seal and timing guides. This is an OEM INA Idler Pulley, also known as the roller pulley or deflection pulley. The idler pulleys are known to be the primary sources for 'belt squealing'. The pulley is also encased in rubber which will crack over time. If left without service the rubber could fail completely, chucking the belt and leaving you stranded.
