When these gaskets leak you'll start to smell oil burning when the engine is hot. Also everything downward from the top of the engine becomes coated in a greasy film.
The valve cover gasket keeps all of the motor oil inside your engine. Your valve train and lifters get soaked with oil to keep everything lubricated.
