BMW Transmission Parts for BMW 3 Series E36 (1992-1998)

The ZF S5D 320Z 5-speed transmission is known for its robust design, exceptional durability, and impressive power-handling capability. Unfortunately, as these transmissions age, shifter-related issues have become increasingly common. Problems such as difficulty selecting gears, a sticky shifter, or a decline in shift quality are often the result of worn detent springs, pins, and bushings. These components are essential for precise gear engagement and proper shifter centering, making their replacement a critical step in maintaining optimal performance.

Replacing detents requires specialized tools known as "drifts," which are notoriously hard to find. Fortunately, we've developed a complete Detent Tool Kit, featuring five precision-engineered drifts designed for exact fitment in the ZF transmission's detent bores. This toolset makes detent replacement straightforward and minimizes the risk of damage to internal transmission components.

Features

Complete Tool Kit: Includes five precision-machined drifts specifically designed for the ZF 5-speed transmission’s detent bores and caps. Hassle-Free Detent Replacement: Simplifies the process of removing and installing detents with professional-grade precision. Protects Your Investment: Reduces the risk of damaging internal transmission components during service. Durable Construction: Made from heavy-duty 1045 steel for exceptional strength and long-lasting reliability.

If allowed in the rules these solid aluminum transmission mounts offer many advantages over a urethane or Delrin mounts. It's no wonder that these mounts have found their way into the top BMW racers in the country. These are machined from solid aluminum and have zero deflection, engine torque will cause a rubber or urethane mount to flex or deflect allowing more torque to passed through the drive line (instead of being wasted winding up the mount). This puts the shift linkages in better consistent alignment. And unlike rubber or urethane the aluminum has zero wear and is not affected by leaking oil or other fluids so this is likely the last set of transmission mounts you will ever need. We very strongly recommend using the solid transmission and engine mounts together as a complete kit, mixing a rubber mount with a metal mount will cause undue stress on the mounting points and will lead to a failure. We never advise using a solid mount unless a corresponding solid mount is also used.

These are a no-compromise design for all-out racing use, full solid aluminum mounts should not be used on street-driven cars since there is no material to absorb vibration making these quite harsh for regular street use (track cars don't care about noise).

The ZF 320z S5D is a common swap choice among BMW enthusiasts due to its reliable and robust nature. Unfortunately, it does have a weakness. The detent pins and springs that live inside of the transmission are known to wear down over time, often causing the shift lever to lean towards the 5th gear position when in neutral.

This full-service kit consists of everything you need to replace the failing detents in your ZF transmission. The kit contains only Genuine ZF components, all of which are sure to provide you with smooth shifting and operation for years to come.

This kit includes the following items:

3 Detent Covers - 07119937227 3 Shift Pin Kits - 23117525048 2 Shift Pin Bushing Kits - 23117542726 1 Detent Pin - 23311224849 1 Detent Pin - 23317502165 Remedying the ZF's detent issue is a must for any enthusiast planning to get the most out of their transmission. Proper centering is essential for quick and smooth shifting, both being desirable features in any application. This kit is easy to install with several DIY guides existing online. A set of "drift" tools are required for proper installation.

One pin kit that helps to address issues with shifting into 1st through 4th gear. We recommend purchasing 3 kits to ensure all pins are new and provide the best results.
