A common issue on N54 motors is cam bearing ledges scoring due to lack of lubrication, and if left unattended can cause damage to the camshafts and increase oil consumption. These WPC-treated cam bearing ledges help prevent lubrication issues to ensure no scoring occurs on the bearing ledge or camshaft. What is WPC, you ask? WPC is a surface treatment that reduces friction and adds strength - two improvements that benefit internal engine components. Ultra-fine particles are fired at the surface at very high speeds, like shot-peening - but much, much smaller. The parts come out smoother and stronger due to thermal discharge. The two largest enemies of any high-performance engine are heat and friction - and WPC has found a way to reduce both.

The engineers at Vargas saw and dealt with this problem time and again, and they saw fit to do something about it. This hub uses a proprietary "Spline Lock" technology that uses high tolerance machined splines which press into the crank, and positively lock the hub to the crank. The splines are machined in such a way that rotational forces drive the hub, and splines deeper into the crank meaning when the hub encounters a situation that would normally slip a stock hub the splined hub is driven into the crank to keep it in place (much like a splined extractor). When the engine simply can't handle the stresses its put under or the design is such that it simply does not support extreme conditions, issues can arise. Under certain conditions, the N55/S55 crank hub likes to spin, without warning and even when the engine is in perfect health. MMR has produced a EN36 machined billet one-piece crank hub heat treated with a 0.75mm case hardening which makes it extremely durable. Due to the one-piece design, it ensures that the friction plates cannot slip. This offers a huge jump in reliability when paired with a new properly torques crank bolt. Installation is requires no drilling or modification to the OEM crankshaft ensuring a perfect fit! Included in this kit is MMR's T-6061 machined billet aluminum capture plate anodized in their trademark finish. The MMR Performance capture plate secures the head of the OE crank bolt and prevents it from turning or being able to loosen. *Installation recommended by a professional shop or technician.

The centerpiece of this MMX kit is the UK-made CNC-machined one-piece crank hub, created from billet EN36 steel that's heat-treated with a 0.75mm case hardening, making it incredibly strong and durable. Included are four aerospace precision-machined dowels that mechanically lock the hub to the end of the crank itself, plus a brand new OE bolt. Installation of these dowels is certainly not a DIY job. But, to make the job easier for the professionals, ensuring that the required crank modifications are made safely and accurately, the MMX kit also includes a full installation jig that includes a bolt-on drilling guide, a location bolt for this guide, plus an HSS rolled high-speed drill bit. Together, the single-piece design combined with the four-pin location ensures that there is simply no way that the friction plates can ever slip. With the new OE crank bolt tightened appropriately, this delivers a transformational improvement in reliability and peace of mind versus the OE version. Also included is the MMR Crank Bolt Capture Plate. Despite the fact that BMW engineers some of the worlds most revered engines, during number crunching something always has to be a compromise. One item that is always found to be a weak point- the OEM hardware. It is definitely sub-par for real performance use under high stress such as modded engines and track use. We use these fasteners on all of VAC's in-house head builds. Whenever the head is coming off, your switching to forced induction, or if you are simply prepping to drive your car hard; we highly recommend switching to far superior race-grade hardware. These Head Stud Kits greatly improve reliability; helping to eliminate movement of the of the cylinder head and intern, gasket failure caused by inferior OEM head-bolt stretch. This is the #1 cause of premature head gasket failure, especially on boosted or high output engines. Though more expensive than OEM, converting to one of VAC's head studs kits will not only give added strength and reliability when its needed most, but provides the most accurate torque readings because studs don’t “twist” into the block; all clamping forces are on one axis, and there is less force exerted on the normally stressed threads of the block. This increases block and hardware life and typically makes the head easier to properly install to the block, a blessing if your head may have to be removed more than once. Especially in the time crunch of racing, when engines are dissembled frequently, studs make removing and installing the cylinder head on to the block a much easier task. By allowing the studs to act as a guide on to the head, your head slides on and off and also ensures proper alignment of the head and gasket for the same reason. It is similar to converting your wheel-bolts to wheel-studs.
