BMW Control Arm Replacements & Upgrades for BMW 1 Series E88 (2008-2013)

Control arms, and their integrated ball joints, are some of the most crucial components on a BMW suspension. The control arms literally control the wheel and suspension as they go through their range of motions. They do more than just keep the alignment in a constant spec - they are a vital locating component for the suspension itself. A faulty or worn control arm or ball joint is a very dangerous and potentially life-threatening problem so make sure they are inspected and replaced at regular intervals.

Most control arms for BMWs consist of an inner and outer ball joint made of plastic, rubber, Delrin, or metal and covered in grease with a rubber boot to seal it from the outside. The ball joint rotates and spins as the control arm goes through its movements and that will wear the ball joint and make it loose. The grease inside the housing can also get used up, evaporate, or become contaminated from moisture and foreign particles. As the ball joint becomes worn it can result in excess movement within the housing. Your steering and handling will become less precise and there is usually a light clunking or clicking sound. In rare and extreme cases the ball joint can separate from the control arm completely, leading to a total loss of suspension and steering control. You should have the ball joint play checked annually and replace them every 3-4 years. Most track organizations will not allow a car if they are older than three years.

Control arms also take abuse from impacts and handling forces. Aluminum control arms will generally bend and prevent an accurate alignment. Steel control arms will crack and fracture and require close inspection annually and replacement every 3-4 years.

    The front upper and lower control arms from the E9X M3 are a direct bolt-in replacement upgrade for the stock parts on the non-M E90/E91/E92/E93 3-series and E82/E88 1-series. With the M3 components the fluid-filled bushings of the standard suspension are replaced with solid rubber cores or a sealed monoball-joint, making the suspension stiffer, more responsive, and longer lasting.

    This package includes:

    • M3 front upper control arms (thrust arm, tension strut) (31102283575 and 31102283576)
      The upper control arms eliminate the fluid-filled stock bushing which is very prone to leaking the fluid and cease being effective. The solid rubber M3 bushing is also a bit stiffer for more precise steering and control.
    • M3 front upper inner bushings (31102283579)
    • M3 front lower control arms (wishbone) (31102283577 and 31102283578)
      The M3 lower control arm has a sealed inner bearing instead of the rubber-isolated stock bushing. The bearing allows the lower arm to rotate freely instead of binding up. It's also a bit longer and curved slightly to give more negative camber (adds .75 of negative camber).

    Optional: M3 headlight adjusting rod (37142283867). This rod corrects the headlights for your ride height. The original non-M leveling rod will not work on the new M3 control arm. This rod is required on all cars with Xenon headlights but not needed for standard halogen lights.

    With the added negative camber the steering is sharper and understeer is reduced. And the stiffer bushings and bearings deflect less which also improves steering feel and response. Since all of these parts are from the M3 there is no question on quality or longevity; no doubt as to their effectiveness or reputation. There's almost no downside to this upgrade. These are intended for street cars but even lightly tracked cars will see significant benefits to the handling and response.

    We offer this package with the OEM TRW brand components or with Original BMW branded parts (stamped with TRW logo).

    The upper control arm (also called the tension strut or thrust arm) is the most critical bushing in the front suspension. It's the bushing that takes the bulk of the force from the tire and the one that wears out the easist. The stock non-M rubber bushings are filled with a dampening fluid that absorbs vibration and harsh suspension movements. However, this fluid is prone to leaking leaving you with a significantly weaker bushing. A worn thrust arm bushing will have significant slop and play which will lead to poor and imprecise steering feel, loose handling, and clunking noises. We offer a range of bushing options so you can either restore the original handling and feel or upgrade to a bushing that better suits your needs and expectations. We have put together this selection of stock and upgraded thrust arms so you can make direct comparisons of all of the options out there. Click on the blue banners below for detailed information on each upper control arm option.

    Note that BMW recommends replacing the control arms after every other bushing change. The arms should not be used again if the bushings have been replaced once already. Our control arm upgrades are sold as complete packages - a pair of control arms (left and right) with new inner bushings already pressed in, new outer ball joints, and any necessary hardware.

    + Option 1 - Stock Replacement

    This option is the base set of replacement arms, ball joints, and bushings. These are direct replacement fluid-filled bushings that are no different than the parts that came on the car originally. If you want the same ride and handling characteristics as when the car was straight off the showroom, this is the best package for you to buy. Simply install your new parts, have an alignment done, and you're on your way!
    Option 1 Package Includes:
    • Left & Right Upper Control Arms with ball joints (31126769797 and 31126769798) aka Thrust Arm, Tension Strut, or Pull Rod.

    + Option 2 - Meyle HD Upgrade

    The Meyle HD arms and bushings are also a direct replacement for the original arms but feature stronger, more durable components. The Meyle HD outer ball joint is much larger and a higher-grade material than the factory spec. The larger ball joint will last longer and the dust boot is stronger as well to keep out moisture and gritty contaminants. The inner HD bushing is a solid rubber piece instead of the fluid-filled stock bushings. It's also stiffer and deflects less to give a more sporty and crisp handling, and sharper steering. All alignment specs remain as per factory.
    Option 2 Package Includes:
    • Meyle HD Left & Right Upper Control Arms with HD ball joints (31126769797MY and 31126769798MY) aka Thrust Arm, Tension Strut, or Pull Rod.

    The M3 control arm upgrade is for people who want a very serious change in the ride/handling of the car. These are the factory OEM E9X M3 upper control arms so the ride will not be much different than a standard M3. But it is a very large jump compared to the stock E9X arms and bushings since they are not fluid-filled and harder rubber compound than the stock or Meyle HD bushings. These are a direct replacement to the original arms and do not require any modification to install and will not change the alignment settings. But for the best results, we recommend only using these with the M3 lower control arms (wishbones).
    Option 3 Package Includes:

    One step beyond the M3 bushings in terms of performance are these monoball bearing bushings developed by Turner Motorsport. These were developed for our street project E90s with feedback from a similar setup on our E90 and E92 racecars. But for this application we chose a sealed monoball with an inner liner to isolate the added noise, vibration, and harshness that a full solid monoball bearing will have. Our monoball thrust arm bushings are more at home on the street than other kits that are advertised as race bushings. The advantage of the monoball bearing is that it will not deflect under load. The rubber bushings move in all sorts of directions and that changes your alignment, especially when used with big brake kits or when driven hard. Our monoball sits in a CNC machined aluminum housing which has zero deflection. The monoball allows complete freedom of movement but only at the desired angles. What you get is superior steering precision, better handling from more consistent alignment, and longer bushing life. And thanks to the inner liner and sealed rubber boots there's none of the extra noise or reduced service life of fully solid race bushings.
    Option 4 Package Includes:
    • Left & Right Upper Control Arms with ball joints (31102283575 and 31102283576) aka Thrust Arm, Tension Strut, or Pull Rod.
    • Outer ball joint securing nuts
    • Turner inner control arm monoball bushings (TSUE9080QIS)

The track strut controls the toe alignment of the rear suspension (whether the tire points in or out on a horizontal axis) It also helps to locate the suspension to the subframe. As the rubber bushings wear, the tire can actually drift in and out of alignment, resulting in a loose or unstable handling feel (especially when accelerating in a corner). This is the stock replacement that fits either the Left or Right side of the vehicle.

    Replacement stock lower trailing arm for the E82 1-series and E9X 3-series. The trailing arm is also an impact arm, and is designed to bend if the wheel takes a major impact. It can also be bent by tow truck operators looking for something to hook onto. However it happens, if the trailing arm is bent it will throw off the alignment for the rear suspension. There are rubber bushings at either end that also wear but these can be replaced separately (new arm does not include new bushings). This is the stock replacement that fits either the Left or Ride side of the vehicle.
