The pulley is also encased in rubber which will crack over time. If left without service the rubber could fail completely, chucking the belt and leaving you stranded. If your N52 engine is running rough, is low on power, or you are getting check engine lights for timing related issues, there is a good chance that you have a faulty VANOS component. The two most common parts to fail are the Camshaft Adjusters and VANOS Solenoids.
